As technology continues to advance, new tools and products are being developed to help us better understand and interact with the world around us. Esri released a new product called ArcGIS Reality, a platform that combines reality mapping and geographic information system (GIS) technology to give us a whole new perspective on reality. Reality Mapping So, what is Reality Mapping? In simple terms, it is the process of integrating real-world data into a digital map or virtual reality environment. This can include anything from satellite imagery and aerial photographs, lidar to 3D models, and sensor data. The goal is to create a more comprehensive view of our surroundings and enable us to make better-informed decisions. It is about bringing reality capture and GIS together, with an emphasis on geospatial accuracy. A couple of common uses of reality mapping is to create a digital twin of a city, visualize proposed developments and infrastructure projects, or emergency responder to quickly assess the situation on the ground. ArcGIS Reality ArcGIS Reality is a product suite that provides a comprehensive set of tools and workflows for creating reality mapping products from drone and aerial imagery. With ArcGIS Reality, users can generate Digital surface Model (DSM), Digital Terrain Model (DTM), true Orthomosacis, 3D meshes, and point clouds. This allows users to produce high‑fidelity 3D basemaps, elevation surfaces, and digital twins—even from medium and large-format cameras, and across large areas like cities or countries. ArcGIS Reality Product Family The ArcGIS Reality is a suite of products, which consists of: ArcGIS Reality Studio, a new standalone desktop application ArcGIS Reality for ArcGIS Pro, a new ArcGIS Pro extension Site Scan for ArcGIS ArcGIS Drone2Map All the products offered in ArcGIS Reality are powered by the same engine, known as the ArcGIS Reality Engine. You can choose which ArcGIS Reality products best suit your needs and the extent of your project. When it comes to reality mapping by using drone imagery, there are two options available. ArcGIS Drone2Map is a desktop reality mapping product specifically designed for drone imagery. Alternatively, Site Scan for ArcGIS is a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) product that utilizes the cloud to optimize reality mapping with drone imagery. For reality mapping on a larger scale, such as at a city or country-wide level, there are two options to consider. ArcGIS Reality for ArcGIS Pro, an extension to ArcGIS Pro, can fulfill this need. Additionally, ArcGIS Reality Studio, a standalone desktop application, is also available. How do you know which experience is best for you? It all depends on the platform you are using to collect data and size of your project area. ArcGIS Drone2Map and Site Scan for ArcGIS are solutions focused on drone mapping for sites with a relatively small extent. You can use Drone2Map when you have a small drone team, and Site Scan is a SaaS product designed to support larger drone programs conducting lots of flights and managed in the cloud. On the opposite end of the spectrum, ArcGIS Reality Studio, is a hyper-focused application designed for imagery collected by crewed aircraft over a large area using metric frame cameras. It’s great for citywide and countrywide mapping. ArcGIS Reality for ArcGIS Pro provides 3D reality mapping directly within ArcGIS Pro. It’s designed for users that are working at a large scale using a variety of sensors. ArcGIS Reality for Education ArcGIS Reality is a great tool to be used for teaching, research, and campus operation. The easiest to start is with ArcGIS Drone2Map, which is the reality mapping product for drone imagery. ArcGIS Drone2Map ArcGIS Drone2Map Standard license is included in Esri Education Institutional agreement and ArcGIS for Schools. With the ArcGIS Drone2Map Standard, you can create 2D product outputs such as true Orthomosaics, DEM, DSM, and DTM. If you need to create 3D reality mapping outputs such as point clouds or textured meshes, you can use ArcGIS Drone2Map Advanced license, which is available with added cost (education pricing). Site Scan for ArcGIS Another option is to leverage cloud and optimize your drone reality mapping by using Site Scan for ArcGIS, which is SaaS solution that host and process all your drone mapping in the cloud. Site Scan for ArcGIS is available with added cost (education pricing). ArcGIS Reality Studio and ArcGIS Reality for ArcGIS Pro These products are designed for large-area scale reality mapping production involving variety of sensors and aerial imagery captured with metric cameras. At the time this blog is posted, ArcGIS Reality studio and ArcGIS Reality for ArcGIS Pro are available only with commercial pricing. We are currently evaluating the possibility of offering reduced pricing for Education. Need more info? Please contact your respective Esri Account Manager to get more information about ArcGIS Reality’s options, licenses and to get quotes. Feel free to contact me to discuss more on technology aspects of ArcGIS Reality. Learn more about ArcGIS Reality here.

(Updated 7/10/2024) Geospatial AI is advancing the Science of GIS through AI-driven innovation, to automate data extraction, and uncover valuable insights faster than ever. This blog provides links to the resources. 2024 Webinar recording on Leveraging AI in ArcGIS 2023 Webinar recording on "Unlocking the Power of Deep Learning Applications using ArcGIS. Multi levels approach to Geospatial Deep Learning in ArcGIS ArcGIS has tools to help with every step of the deep learning workflow including data preparation and exploratory data analysis, training deep learning models, deploying them for inferencing, and disseminating results using web layers and maps. Geospatial deep learning capabilities are available at multiple levels to accommodate a wide range of audiences. The core of all geospatial deep learning in ArcGIS lies within the arcgis.learn module of Python API, at the very centermost circle. This module serves as a foundation for geospatial AI across imagery, 3D, tabular, text, and timeseries data. While the Python API is designed for data scientists, scripters, and advanced users, the intermediate circle features GeoAI tools and apps that are primarily designed for geospatial analysts, or image analysts, which are user centered experiences. Finally, the outermost circle is built around ready-to-use pretrained models, aimed at making geospatial deep learning more accessible to general users. For the deployment, deep learning in ArcGIS can be performed in ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, and ArcGIS Notebooks, providing options for users with different proficiency levels. Performing GeoAI using Ready-to-use pretrained models We understand that the most time-consuming part of deep learning is collecting samples, labeling, and training the model. To make the application of deep learning more accessible, particularly for new users or those seeking expedited outcomes, Esri has made available a vast collection of geospatial deep learning models on the ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World. As of the date of this blog, there are currently 61 pretrained deep learning models available, with more expected in the future. Through this storymap, you can explore a range of examples displaying how pretrained models have been implemented to extract features of interest including building footprints, parking lots, land cover classification, waterbody extraction, and more. The list of pretrained models are available to explore and download from with the ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World. Every pretrained model includes metadata and guide instructions. They can be utilized in ArcGIS Online Image Analysis tools, as well as in ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Enterprise. Recently, a number of institutions are experiencing problem in using Single Sign On (SSO) to login to their ArcGIS Online org. The following explains the reason and action needed: ArcGIS Online Organization administrators who have enabled the advanced SAML options ‘Enable Signed Requests’ and/or ‘Encrypt Assertion’ will need to obtain the new ArcGIS Online Service Provider metadata file and associate it with their Identity Provider before September 25, 2022. Customers using these advanced SAML options who do not upload the updated ArcGIS Online metadata file containing the new certificate to their identity provider (eg. Azure Active Directory Enterprise Applications with Token Encryption) before this date will receive an IDP specific error when they attempt to sign into ArcGIS Online with an Enterprise account. The new ArcGIS Online SAML certificate will expire 9/27/2023. The full story and step-by step instruction to obtain the updated metadata file can be found in this blog: https://www.esri.com/arcgis-blog/products/arcgis-online/administration/action-required-to-continue-using-saml-with-arcgis-online-2022/ If you experience the same issue (broken SSO login to ArcGIS Online), please work with your IT team and apply the instructions written in the above blog. In addition, we would like to suggest the following practices tips for ArcGIS Online Administrators, Have both SSO Admin account AND Built -in Admin account. So, if you encounter a problem login using SSO, you can still use the built-in account through www.arcgis.com. Keep the ArcGIS Online Administrative contacts current in your ArcGIS Online (Settings > General), to keep receiving any communications from Esri Customer Service. More than one contacts can be added. If you need more assistance in troubleshooting the above issue, feel free to contact Esri Technical support.
