(Updated 8/18/2025) ArcGIS Online Organization administrators that have enabled Signed and/or Encrypted Assertions in alignment with ArcGIS Online Best Practices for SAML Security need to obtain the new ArcGIS Online Service Provider metadata file + certificate and associate it with their SAML Identity Provider (eg. Azure Active Directory Enterprise Applications with Token Encryption) before September 19, 2025otherwise ArcGIS Online sign-ins with Enterprise (SAML) accounts will fail.    Follow the instructions in this blog article:  Action Required: ArcGIS Online SAML Customers If you encounter an issue while updating the certificate and require additional help with troubleshooting, please reach out to Esri Technical Support.   (updated 8/30/2024) Attention to ArcGIS Online Administrators ArcGIS Online Organization administrators that have enabled Signed and/or Encrypted Assertions in alignment with ArcGIS Online Best Practices for SAML Security need to obtain the new ArcGIS Online Service Provider metadata file + certificate and associate it with their SAML Identity Provider. The current certificate is set to expire on September 24, 2024. This action to replace the certificate requires collaboration between the ArcGIS Online administrator and the SAML Identity Provider's IT administrator. If you are not the correct contact for this matter, please forward this email to your relevant IT personnel. We strongly recommend taking immediate actions to prevent any disruption in using SAML (SSO) for accessing your ArcGIS Online organization.  If you are not enabling Signed SAML Assertions within your ArcGIS Online organizations which will utilize certificates, then you don't have certificate; therefore certificate rotation is not required .  However, moving forward, to align with industry standard best practices, we recommend you to use certificates.  Additionally, we recommend the following best practices for ArcGIS Online Administrators: Have both SSO Admin account AND Built -in Admin account.  This way, if you experience issues logging in with SSO, you can still access your account through www.arcgis.com  using the built-in credentials. Make sure the ArcGIS Online Administrative contacts are up to date in your ArcGIS Online (Settings > General) to continue receiving communications from Esri Customer Service. The June 2024 release of ArcGIS Online introduces updated User Types for ArcGIS.   By default all users under Education license agreements with Esri are upgraded to Professional Plus user type, which provides the highest access into the functionalities and capabilities.  The updated user types have an impact to ArcGIS Image for ArcGIS Online.  This product, which provide image hosting and analysis in ArcGIS Online is no longer provisioned as an extension.  With the June 2024 release of ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Image for ArcGIS Online becomes capabilities in ArcGIS Online.   What does it mean?  It means that: ArcGIS Image for ArcGIS Online now part ArcGIS Online capabilities, giving access to create hosted imagery layers and perform image analysis for all users with Professional User Type.   For Administrators Moving forward, Administrators will no longer see the name ArcGIS Image for ArcGIS Online extension.  For the Professional Plus user type, they will see the following capabilities included within the Licenses > User types tab of ArcGIS Online: These capabilities are enabled for the default roles.   If you are using custom roles within your organization, make sure you to check the following privilege settings.      Can you disable/revoke the capabilities? Drones are becoming more popular and accessible for various applications, such as surveying, monitoring, inspection, and research. Drone imagery has become a popular input data for image and GIS analysis.  Processing drone imagery and creating useful information products are skills that students should learn before they can use them for analysis.   That's where ArcGIS Drone2Map comes in handy. ArcGIS Drone2Map is a desktop application that allows you to quickly and easily create 2D True Orthomosaics, digital elevation surfaces, 3D point clouds, and 3D meshes from drone imagery. You can also perform analysis, such as measuring distances, areas, and volumes, detecting changes, and identifying features. As a desktop application, it can process drone imagery while offline or in the field without an internet connection.  ArcGIS Drone2Map is powered by the ArcGIS Reality Engine, a comprehensive technology developed by Esri.  It seamlessly integrates with ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise, allowing you to easily share your drone products for further analysis and collaborate with others.   ArcGIS Drone2Map has two types of licensing: Standard license and Advanced license.   The main difference between ArcGIS Drone2Map Standard and Advanced is that the Standard license can only process 2D products, while the Advanced license can process both 2D and 3D products.  All licenses are configured in your ArcGIS Named User licenses. The good news is that ArcGIS Drone2Map Standard license is included in all Esri Education Institution Agreement for teaching, research, and campus operations. So, for many education institutions, the licenses are there for you to use.   Here are the steps to get started: Contact your ArcGIS License Administrator to: Provision ArcGIS Drone2Map Standard license to your ArcGIS Online Name User Obtain an installation media. Install ArcGIS Drone2Map Launch ArcGIS Drone2Map and Sign-in using Name User account with ArcGIS Online Watch a series of short videos on ArcGIS Drone2Map Workflows Complete the short tutorial:  Get started with ArcGIS Drone2Map   Note: You don’t have to fly a drone to use ArcGIS Drone2Map software.  If you can get access to a collection of drone imagery, or maybe reuse drone sample data from Esri tutorials, you can start teaching the students how to process drone data.    Image size in ArcGIS Drone2Map ArcGIS Drone2Map will only process drone images that have up to 75 megapixels. Also, each project can process up to 100 gigapixels on a Standard license and 300 gigapixels on an Advanced license.   Sharing Outputs from ArcGIS Drone2Map can be used directly in ArcGIS Pro or published as feature layer, tile layer, scene layer, imagery layer, elevation layer, catalog dataset or web map, in ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise, for further editing and sharing. 2D outputs published from ArcGIS Drone2Map to ArcGIS Online   Creating 3D output products with an Advanced license With an Advanced license, you can generate both 2D outputs and 3D outputs: point clouds, meshes, and textured models that capture the details and dimensions of your drone imagery and creating reality mapping.   Education pricing for ArcGIS Drone2Map Advanced license is available and significantly discounted compared to the commercial offering.  Contact your respective Esri Account Manager to get a price quote.  An example of 3D Mesh output from ArcGIS Drone2Map   Resources When you start ArcGIS Drone2Map, you will find a link to resources that provides a knowledge hub for learning how to use Drone2Map and staying up to date on product information. February 2024 update of ArcGIS Online brings lots of exciting new Features.  To assist you in getting up to speed with the new features, here are the key highlights from this update: Bulk-delete members (watch video 0:23 - 1:33) Deleting users in ArcGIS Online organizations for academic purposes has been a tedious task.  Good news for Administrators!  With Feb release, Administrators can easily delete multiple members from their organization and transfer their contents to another user (or delete their content) in one workflow.  The workflow includes managing groups as well.     NOTE/CAUTION: Administrators must exercise caution when deleting members, as it is a task that cannot be reverted.  Before performing these tasks, it is important to have data and named user governance standards in place, as well as backups if necessary.  Refer to these best practices blogs: Storage and Data Governance Recommendations in Education  Messaging for ArcGIS Online users leaving the university (students, faculty, staff) Best Practices for Managing Your Deployment & Licenses   Save Media layers as Items (watch video 1:34 – 2:11) Media layers was introduced last year.  It allows anyone to quickly overlay scanned paper maps or images so they visually line-up with other layers.    A new feature is added in Feb update to save Media Layers created in Map Viewer as items in the Content and reuse in other web maps.   Previously, they could only be saved in the web map. The placed media positioning will be saved in the Media Layer item and automatically adjust to other maps it is added to.     Introducing ArcGIS Data Pipelines (watch video 2:12 – 4:34) Do you wish to connect to other data sources from ArcGIS Online?  Now you can do that with ArcGIS Data Pipelines app in ArcGIS Online.  This new app offers a fast and efficient way to ingest, prepare, and maintain data, with intuitive drag-and-drop interface. Users can connect to a variety of data sources including Amazon S3, Google BigQuery, Snowflake, feature layers, JSON files from Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure Blob storage, or Public URL.  ArcGIS Data pipelines can be accessed from App Launcher.  It can be run interactively or on a recurring schedule, helping you to ensure that data is kept up to date even when the source data is changing. Check this link for more info.     ArcGIS Instant Apps (watch video 4:35 – 7:10) Many of us uses ArcGIS Instant Apps templates to create web applications for our projects.   Feb updates include several enhancements for ArcGIS Instant Apps: New Manager App Template – The new Manager app template in ArcGIS Instant Apps lets users locate, view, and filter records on a map or table, as well as modify data in editable feature layers. For example, after data is collected using apps such as ArcGIS Survey123 or ArcGIS Field Maps, Manager can be used to simplify the data review process for one or multiple maps.    Language Switcher Enhancements – Using the language switcher, users can choose a language from a drop-down list and view app-authored text in that language in their web app. With this update, app authors can easily export text from the translation dialog out to Excel, update the translations, and then import the updated text. The language switcher is now supported in five additional templates: 3D Viewer, Atlas, Attachment Viewer, Basic, and Slider. Additional Enhancements – New capabilities are supported in ArcGIS Instant Apps templates. Sidebar allows users to view oriented imagery such as imagery captured from ArcGIS QuickCapture. Also, users can visualize data from floor-aware maps in the 3D Viewer, Media Map and Manager templates.   Manage ArcGIS Notebooks Files (watch video 7:11 – 8:30) For those who are using or administering ArcGIS Notebooks, you probably know it is difficult to manage the notebook files.  With the Feb update, ArcGIS Notebooks now has a new feature that allows users to manage their notebook files. With this update, users can now organize and manage their files in a notebook workspace separate from the notebooks themselves. This feature provides administrators with the capability to oversee and manage the content within the notebook workspace for all notebook users. It offers a more efficient and organized way to handle notebook files.  Look for Manage button in the ArcGIS Notebooks interface.   Custom web styles For those who wish to use your own unique web symbol styles, you can publish your own web styles from ArcGIS Pro and use them in Map Viewer.  The web styles can contain 2D symbols for points, lines, and polygons. For more information on publishing web styles from ArcGIS Pro, see Use published 2D symbols in ArcGIS Online.  With Feb update, you can now browse for and add custom web styles. When changing symbol styles, click [+] to open the Add styles pane to browse for available styles.  Once a new style is added, view the symbols in List view to use search to help you locate the symbols you want.
