The recent update of ArcGIS Online brings exciting improvements and new capabilities.   Key Improvement With the recent update, ArcGIS Online users now have the ability to download the ArcGIS Pro installer directly from the new My settings page in their profile.  Instructions: Log into your ArcGIS Online account Go to “My settings” Choose “Licenses” Find the link to download next to ArcGIS Pro This option is available if the user already has an ArcGIS Pro license assigned to their ArcGIS Online named-user account. If your institution has migrated to the new Education Institutional Agreement, you can assign users the “GIS Professional Advanced” user type, which includes an ArcGIS Pro license by default. Otherwise, you can assign users the “Creator” user type and then assign ArcGIS Pro as an add-on license in their account. In either case, ArcGIS Pro extensions can be added afterwards as add-on licenses. This option provides a better experience for faculty members and students to install ArcGIS Pro in their own machine. Other improvements and new functionalities   HTTPS readiness: As of December 2020, HTTP support will be discontinued and references to HTTP URLs will no longer work in ArcGIS Online. ArcGIS Online notifies users about the upcoming change. Map Viewer Beta: Highlights include enhanced label authoring with support for multiline labeling, scale-dependent labels, and rotation. Sharing and collaboration: You can also embed videos in item page and group page descriptions. Configurable apps: New Minimalist (beta) configurable app built using the 4x version of the ArcGIS API for JavaScript. Data management: When purchasing an ArcGIS Online organizational subscription, you can now choose the region—United States or Europe—where your geospatial data will be stored. 3D: You can drape feature layers onto integrated mesh scene layers for better 3D visualization. You can replace the contents of a scene layer you published from a scene layer package. ArcGIS Security Advisor: Security Advisor delivers recommendations based on your current settings. GitHub account: New social login: Developers and other GitHub users can sign in or sign up using their GitHub account credentials. ArcGIS Notebooks (beta): ArcGIS Notebooks are now available in ArcGIS Online via a public beta. ArcGIS Notebooks integrates Jupyter directly within ArcGIS Online. ArcGIS StoryMaps: Newly added functionalities: Map actions, Guided Tour block, a navigation bar, updates to sharing. ArcGIS Dashboards: Operations Dashboard renamed to ArcGIS Dashboards. To support distance learning during the COVID-19 crisis, Esri Press e-books are made available at no charge for the students through the VitalSource Helps program starting on Monday, March 23, 2020   Info for Students   For students to participate, the school has to be a 2-year or 4-year college or university. You can find a complete list of eligible schools on this site. Students will have access to up to 7 titles of their choice (from any publisher, but a total of 7 titles) Students have to sign up with VitalSource and access e-books through Bookshelf using their school-assigned email. Access is provided now  through May 25, 2020. After that, the e-book(s) will disappear from their Bookshelf library. Esri created the COVID-19 GIS Hub site to share authoritative content and information to our global community.  You can build your own Coronavirus Hub site with the new ArcGIS Hub Coronavirus Response template.  The template is provided for free for any customer with ArcGIS Online subscription as part of ArcGIS Hub Basic license.  All you need is an ArcGIS Online account with Publisher role.  Once you are logged to ArcGIS Online, follow these instructions:   Go to the app launcher Navigate to ArcGIS Hub Click new site Browse the gallery Activate the Coronavirus Response template The template is highly customizable and an effective way to share information to your community.   Refer to this newly published blog titled How to Launch a Coronavirus Response Website Today for step-by-step instructions on how to get started using the template.  ArcGIS Hub Premium license If you need to go further and incorporate community engagement into your Hub site, an ArcGIS Hub Premium license provides community user accounts that can be issued to community members to provide a secure account in your Hub.  This enables them to contribute data, create maps and story maps, and participate in initiatives.  ArcGIS Hub Premium is included in the Higher Education Institutional Agreement.  Contact your institution’s Esri license administrator for information about access to your institution’s Hub. The coronavirus (COVID-19) is causing many universities and colleges to virtualize their classes.  Recently we have fielded many questions on how to virtualize ArcGIS, to support the moving of labs, assignments and activities to a complete online setting.  Fortunately, the virtualization of Esri technology, especially ArcGIS Pro and ArcMap, is well tested across many platforms; on-premise and in the cloud.   Esri Virtualization Team has provided information on various virtualization options for ArcGIS Pro and ArcMap in their newly published blog titled Virtualization of ArcGIS from the Cloud and On-Premise platforms to support Higher Education. For those using Jupyter notebooks and ArcGIS Pro out there, this is exciting news!  With the release of ArcGIS Pro 2.5, you can now create, edit, and save Jupyter notebooks as part of your ArcGIS Pro project with ArcGIS Notebooks, Esri’s Jupyter notebook environment.   You can also import existing notebooks created within the open source Jupyter.  No additional license is needed for using ArcGIS Notebooks in ArcGIS Pro 2.5 since it’s part of the core functionality. Many higher education institutions are already using ArcGIS Hub for teaching, research, projects, or campus operations.   ArcGIS Hub is a cloud-based engagement platform that lets organizations work more effectively with their communities.   With ArcGIS Hub, you can create sites and pages to share your data, projects or initiatives.  Take a look at this initiative created by West Chester University Geography and Planning, about their student project with the city of Malaga, Spain     Sharing content with Hub makes your website and pages look focused, easy to navigate, responsive, and effective.   Check the Hub Gallery for other example sites created with Hub. Common ways people use Hub sites is to: Share catalogs of data as open data Create gallery sites (think of a gallery for your class projects) Create narrative/storytelling sites Create dashboards (e.g. performance dashboards) Create initiative websites to rally supporters Encourage action. (to sign up for something, to make a pledge, to register for an event, etc.)   ArcGIS Hub Basic License   You can start creating Hub sites right now, since the basic license level of ArcGIS Hub is already included with ArcGIS Online.  Hub (basic) gives you the ability to make websites and pages and share your data either openly with the public or keep it private to your organization.  Any user with at least one Creator user type and Publisher role can create Hub sites.  Recommendation before jumping into ArcGIS Hub, is to ask/answer these key questions: What is the purpose? Who is your target audience(s)? What issues, stories or facts to raise? What kind of feedback do you expect (if any)? What is the pledge or call to action needed (if any)?   Once you have a clear idea, you can start creating your site or initiative in ArcGIS Hub.    ArcGIS Hub Premium License    If you have a plan to have a Hub site that involves community engagement,  you will then need an ArcGIS Hub Premium license.  Premium licenses provide an easy-to-configure community engagement platform with the ability to: Take surveys Collect feedback Organize events Gather and contribute data from followers      The Premium license will also give you access to well-curated initiative templates and provides community identities for your crowdsource followers.    ArcGIS Hub Premium License is included in the new Higher Education Institutional Site License.  Contact your Esri Account Manager to request the license.  You need to include your organization ArcGIS Online Subscription ID when requesting an ArcGIS Hub Premium license.  One Hub Premium per one ArcGIS Online Subscription.     Visit this site to understand the differences between the Basic and Premium license levels of ArcGIS Hub.     Get Started with ArcGIS Hub   You can get started by watching the Training Seminar, Engage Your Community with ArcGIS Hub, and by reading the how to Launch a Website in Five Steps blog.   You can start using ArcGIS Hub by selecting Hub from the application switcher in ArcGIS Online   Once you get started with ArcGIS Hub, the best way to keep track of product updates, new capabilities, tips and tricks, and to see new Hub site examples is by subscribing to the ArcGIS Hub Newsletter.
