What is a Permalink A permalink, short for permanent link, is the URL for a specific contest entry. In an active contest with lots of entries, a particular entry will only stay on the New Entries tab for a short period of time. It becomes hard to bookmark a specific entry or to email a link when the entry you want is replaced with something new. This is where permalinks come in handy. They take you directly to a specific entry, rather than to the contest's front page. To use a permalink Post Options, select Permalink in the list Copy the URL that appears in your browser's navigation toolbar. Paste the link wherever you need it.

What are member ranks?
Member ranks are a fun gamification element that incentivizes participation, rewards quality, and establishes reputation in the community. Every member of the community is assigned a rank based on their contributions.
Is there a list of the user ranks?
New Member
Observer
New Explorer
Occasional Explorer
Frequent Explorer
New Contributor
Emerging Contributor
Occasional Contributor
Regular Contributor
Frequent Contributor
Honored Contributor
Esteemed Contributor
Legendary Contributor
Note: The ranks were updated September 2024 to simplify the levels and movement through the ranks.
How do I earn a new rank?
All newly registered members are assigned the New Member rank when they create their account. From there member ranks are awarded based on combinations of various types of user activity in the community. In short, the more you participate, the higher a rank you will reach!
The first five ranks are passive ranks, meaning they are members who are browsing, reading, learning, maybe giving a kudo (like) on occasion. As soon as a member creates their first post (new topic, reply or comment), they jump over the remaining passive ranks and up to the first active rank, New Contributor, and then work their way up the ladder from that point forward.
What features are unlocked with each rank?
While we won't spoil all of the surprises heading your way, there are a few key features worth highlighting:
Once you reach the New Contributor rank the following features are enabled:
The private messenger feature is enabled
Upload and embed videos and images
Use a signature and create profile card
What are the criteria for each rank?
It wouldn't be nearly as fun if we told you!
Where does my rank display?
Your rank will display on your profile page, on each post you make, and your profile hover card.
I've seen users with ranks that aren't on the list above. What gives?
It's true. Some members – Esri Staff & Distributor, and our MVPs - have custom ranks so that you'll always know who you're interacting with. Community Admins and Moderators do not follow the rank ladder, their ranks will be identified as Admin or Mod.

What are Badges
Badges are fun reward for participating in the community. The more you participate the more badges you will earn. Many of the badges are part of a series, whereas you take that action more you work up the badge levels.
Where to find your badges
From your profile, your two most recent badges will show here, with a view all badges link.
Click on the view all badges link to see the full badge page. Badges you have earned will be solid color on your badge page, those still to earn will be greyed out until earned. Click on each badge to see the action required to earn it.
You can view other community members badges from their profile.
Other places in the community you will see your badges: in your notifications page, as you earn new badges, they will appear here.

Welcome to Esri Community!
We're excited to have you join us. Before you get started on your journey, we invite you to check out the information below about our community mission, member guidelines, and tips on getting started.
What is Esri Community?
The Esri Community is where the Esri Community—customers, Esri staff, and others in the GIS and geospatial professional community—connect, collaborate, share ideas and grow their career.
What is the mission of Esri Community?
The mission of Esri Community is to provide a central online destination where members can gather to exchange ideas, solve problems, accelerate success and build relationships to create a better world through the use of geospatial technology. To help guide and make sure you have a positive, productive, and fulfilling experience in the community, below are our Esri Community Guiding Principles.
Esri Community Guiding Principles
The Community Guiding Principles are "Be Helpful. Be Human. Be Smart." They closely align with our Esri Community Terms of Use, and you can use these Guiding Principles as a quick check to make sure your contributions are adding value and supporting our community goals.
Be Helpful.
Being helpful means, you should always try and elevate the conversation with a thoughtful contribution while thinking of others. Examples of Being Helpful include:
Respect others by keeping your posts positive and your comments constructive. Personal arguments, personality conflicts, insults, name-calling, inflamed speech, obscenity, and other deviations from our professional mission are not appropriate. As a general rule of thumb: if you wouldn't do it or say it in a large public meeting, you shouldn't do it or say it in the Community.
Respect people's time and attention by asking well-thought-out questions and sharing what you've learned.
Avoid sensitive or provocative topics. Do not start discussions about anything that could be regarded as off-topic, and provocative, or inflammatory. For example, topics such as politics and religion are best avoided in the Community.
Answer questions: If you have the answer to a question, we encourage you to respond to posts when someone asks a question. If you don't know the answer, help find someone who does.
Make sure your contributions are relevant to the conversations and groups. Please do not create duplicate posts in different areas of the community to avoid fragmenting discussions. If you have a new question, start a new post rather than interrupting a conversation. Always ask yourself, "Is my comment or content going to enhance the conversation? Am I posting it in the right place?"
We know you have a lot of ideas for improving the Esri products and services. If you are a customer or partner, you are encouraged to submit new ideas on any of the idea boards related to your suggestion or support existing ones. Don't forget to review our idea submission guidelines before posting, which is on the ArcGIS Ideas page.
If you've found a valuable post, click "Kudos" or share it with others.
Welcome new members and guide them to meaningful conversations and content.
Be Human.
Being human means professionally being yourself. An important part of collaboration includes building relationships and getting to know each other. We encourage you to be social and share parts of who you are that are appropriate and meaningful because doing so helps make the community more connected and human. Examples of "Being Human" include:
Sharing relevant personal or professional experiences and interests, news about a goal you accomplished, acknowledging others for a job well done, etc.
Sharing work experiences and moments that express your creativity, thoughtfulness, and humanity.
Making new connections. Join a conversation with others that you may not know to build new relationships.
Be Smart.
Being smart means to think before you post. If something makes you the slightest bit uncomfortable, figure out what needs to be changed, edit your content, then post. Examples of "Being Smart" include:
Avoid posting confidential information or anything that fellow employees or customers, clients, business partners, suppliers, vendors, or other stakeholders might find offensive.
Don't post anything that would violate any contractual agreements (copyright, trade secret, or otherwise) or nondisclosure agreements to which you are a party.
Be careful with personally-identifying information. Do not send or post social security numbers, home telephone numbers, driver's license numbers, addresses, credit card numbers, etc.
Don't use the Esri Community to promote your business or advertise affiliated websites, domains, companies, or services in any of your discussions, and don't spam community members.
If you have questions or want to learn more about how to partner with us to create relevant and appropriate partner content, contact the Esri Community team at [email protected].
If it's not in a private group or message, then content shared in the Community is open and public. By default, contributions shared openly in the community are accessible to the Esri Community and beyond.
All content should be accurate and credible. You should ensure that you have factual information before posting it. Please refrain from sharing inaccurate news or misleading information.
Digital = Forever. Just like your email and instant messages, content and communications in the Esri Community are immediately captured, are retained and will be accessible far into the future. Make sure you're comfortable with your contributions being accessible for a long time.
Esri Community AI Use Policy
See our Esri Community AI Use Policy regarding guidelines for appropriate and responsible use of AI in Esri Community.
The Esri Logo and Esri Staff & Distributors
You will notice that some community members have an Esri indicator next to their names. This means they are either Esri Inc or an Esri Global Distributor employee.
Like you, they are members of the community, and we encourage them to share their knowledge, product updates, and opinions here.
Community Feedback
We want this to be the best community it can possibly be - so let us know what you think or how we can help improve your experience in Esri Community. You can submit your feedback in the Community Resources (formerly Community Basics) section, look for the Community Feedback board.
Moderation and content review
When needed, the Esri Community team and moderators will review comments before or as they are posted. Those that are off-topic, not relevant to GIS, or violate any policies will be redirected, removed, or not posted.
Regarding violations, we will follow a Steer, Edit, Lock, Archive, Ban policy.
Steer - Post a suggestion or send it via private messaging
Edit- remove the offending information from the post
Lock - consider locking the thread so that no more replies can be added.
Archive/Remove posts or threads may be moved to a private archive/temp removal board
Ban - If problems persist with a specific user, the user may be banned from the site temporarily or permanently
All stages of this violation process are subject to the context of the violation. The Community team will communicate at each phase of the violation. We hope to enforce these rules on a limited basis and encourage you to follow the Community Guidelines to ensure a meaningful and respectful experience for all members of the Esri Community.
Flag inappropriate content for review
If you recognize any violation of these guidelines, please notify us within the community by choosing "Report Inappropriate Content" from the post's Options menu and let us know why you feel the content is inappropriate

I am excited to announce our 2020 GeoNet Contest results! As we shared earlier this year, we are hosting an abbreviated contest for 2020 due to the migration to a new community platform happening this fall. To learn more about the changes coming to GeoNet, be sure to follow the GeoNet Lounge for updates as we get closer.
Without further ado, here are our winners for our shortened 2020 contest:
Elite Level
These community members earned the most points during Jan.1 – Aug 31, mostly by sharing solutions to questions, and sharing their vast knowledge through blogs and posts. I recommend following these community leaders!
1st Place: Dan Patterson (65K points earned in 2020)
Some of you may know that Dan retired this last year from many years of teaching at Carlton University. But, lucky for us, he did not retire from the community! He might be displaying split personalities as he now has two accounts, one from Carlton, and his current “Dan retired” one. Even individually his two accounts both ranked in the top four for the contest, but when merged together it clearly pulled him out as this year’s 1st place Elite contest winner. You can find Dan all over the community sharing his wisdom, and don’t miss his newer blog and his Py...blog!
2nd Place: Robert Scheitlin (64K points earned in 2020)
Many of you know Robert in the community, as he has probably helped you at one time or another. He is and has been our contest winner for many years. Robert is very generous in the time and knowledge he shares with our community. Especially for those in the Web App development, widget development and JavaScript API areas of interest. Robert hosts three user groups in the community specializing in these areas and is very attentive to helping other members with their development questions and needs.
3rd Place: Joshua Bixby (33K points earned in 2020)
Joshua is an experienced Geospatial System Engineer with the Forest Service. He has been a community member, MVP and moderator in the community for many years. Joshua goes above and beyond with sharing his knowledge, helping members find solutions, and directing them to helpful resources. Also, don’t miss Joshua’s blog, Tilting at Globes. where he shares his knowledge, expertise and insights across a variety of topics.
Rookie of the Year level
These members joined the community in 2020, and quickly ascended to the top of the point totals for all 2020 new members.
1st Place: [email protected] (15K points)
A big shout out to 1st place winner for Rookie of the year, David Pike, as he not only ascended to the top of the new members, he also shot into the top 10 for all members earning points this year. David jumped into the community with both feet, no gradual warm-up for him. He started out not only ask questions but also providing solutions and helpful replies to more than 300 posts in the community. David’s knowledge sharing, helping him rise to the ranks of being a valued contributor in the community in less than 7 months, way to go! He is open and helpful. I highly recommend following or connecting with him. Welcome to the community David!
2nd Place: Rajni Sharma (Alpha Coder) (1.7K points)
Ranji is a junior developer at Keyss Software Services in India – He goes by his community name: Alpha Coder. He joined the community in Feb of this year and posted his introduction in the community shortly after joining. Rajni has been using the community to ask questions and find solutions and he recognizes those who help him with marking solutions correct, and helpful. You can find him mostly hanging out the ArcGIS API for Java Script place. Welcome to the community Rajni!
3rd Place: Hussam Rabea (1.4K points)
Hussam is an Omani Engineer and joined our community in May of this year. In a short time Hussam has settled into the community to ask questions and provide feedback and help to others. He recently wrote a blog sharing his own Survey123 use case and knowledge with the community, you can check it out here. Welcome to the community Hussam!
Finalists
I would also like to give a shout out to these awesome community members who came in at the next level of highest point earners for the 2020 contest (after our three Elite winners). I was excited to see a few new names on this list, congratulations!
Jamal NUMAN
Egge-Jan Pollé
David Pike
Joe Borgione
Ken Buja
Doug Browning
Randy Burton
Katherine Clark
Rickey Fite
Curtis Price
Please join me in congratulating these community members and thank them for their contributions to the community.
As we move to a new platform, please be patient with us as we re-design our contest for 2021 and beyond.
Thank you!
The GeoNet Community Team
