I have not downloaded this and tested yet but it looks extremely useful and something we plan to work into our work around Flood Preparedness. Here are some resources for the USA you *might* be able to use as inputs, at least as a starting point if no better local data already exists: FEMA National Flood Hazard Layer Feature Layer Layer: Flood Hazard Zones (ID: 28) Download (Sometimes there are issues working NFHL via REST FEMA Flood Map Service Center | Search All Products ) Microsoft Building Footprints for the entire USA (needs elevation data but a good source of building outlines if you have none) Tiles on ArcGIS Online: https://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=f40326b0dea54330ae39584012807126 Features on ArcGIS Online http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=bb69f10baf334d4c935a0fb23d758f38#overview HIFLD Open Data Many of these layers are now available via the Living Atlas as well Living Atlas of the World | ArcGIS Point datasets include schools, fire stations, hospitals, etc. Gert Van Maren if you have already listed these in the Solution or elsewhere, please let me know and I'll take down this comment.

Here are some persuasive details... Summary When configuring Story Actions we expect to be able to preserve the current user-defined map extent while turning layers on or off. We want the end user to be able to stay focused on the area they have zoomed to after clicking on a Story Action. Technical Problem We would like to take advantage of the synchronization between tabs in the Story Map where each tab represents a hazard. So the end user can type in an address and/or zoom to an area of interest, if they flip through the tabs the hazards automatically change. This is awesome. When we highlight the text and configure story actions action we are happy with the Content > Custom Configuration, this allows us to control the layers on the map. This is awesome. The challenge arises when we configure the Location > Custom Configuration, this results in the end user being taken back to the extent of the first tab. If we configure the Location > as Map default, this also takes us back to the extent of the first tab. This is heart-breaking.... Real-World Problem Each time the end user clicks on the highlighted text, they lose their map extent. They get zoomed back out and have to start over. They are disappointed and stop using the Story Map altogether... Proposed Solution A "do nothing" button. A button that allows us to remove the change in location when they click on a story action. When the end user clicks on the highlighted text, only the Content / Layer changes. Nothing else. This elegant solution allows an intuitive way to explore an area without having to teach a non-GIS person how to turn layers on and off (a foreign concept to 95% of non-GIS Professionals). We love simple Story Maps with just web maps embedded. They are easy to use, load quickly, and help focus the end user on the story you are trying to tell. This enhancement would help app designers configure better Story Maps and reduce the dreaded "appzilla" of apps embedded within apps. Current Workaround: Our current workaround is Story Map Series embedded within a Story Map Journal. It is not optimal (potentially confusing, slow to load, and requires a lot of maintenance), but the only way we can deliver the stakeholder requirements at this point in time. It is confusing because as the end user navigates through hazards they get zoomed out to a default extent. Thank you Story Map Team for considering this enhancement now or in the re-design of Story Maps. Story Maps Software Story Map Series, Story Map Journal Real-World Use Case We are creating a Story Map that allows a user to explore their community by hazard exposure and would also like for them to be able to explore Community Lifelines / Infrastructure in the area. Agreed. Here is a Survey I am analyzing right now...so many the, and, to. Perhaps it could be a simple UI/UX where if I click on the word it filters it out?

We are trying to create a US National Grid Mapbook Task to help emergency management and SAR Teams move onto ArcGIS Pro. Here is a link to our task: https://napsg.maps.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=f93ebd6933cb4679a62ce4f71a2a9615 However, we are having trouble getting a 1:6,000 scale map with 1000m grids on an 8.5x11 or 11x17 layout. This is a standard setup needed by first responders and I hope that there is a simple way to fix this issue? Jeff Baranyi Alix Vezina

I am testing this approach using my US Microbrewery map to make corrections. Very cool! Web map: https://www.arcgis.com/home/webmap/viewer.html?webmap=f7a17f37c68d4f929ea6beac1c19f68a Search for USBrews in Explorer for ArcGIS

Craig - This came up while planning for a field exercise this week. I can understand the challenge of keeping things simple in the user interface but after working with a number of stakeholders, they've agreed they want a way to do this as a dispatcher. Here is one comment: "That seems really inefficient. What if you make a mistake on one of your dispatches, now you have junk stuff in there you can't get rid of. I can see them wanting to have a permanent record of dispatched but there should be some sort of archive. That is just clunky". Potential Solution What about a field in the assignment feature layer called "Archive"? When the end user selects assignments they want archive, they select "Archive" from a dropdown and get prompted "are you sure?". This just changes the entry under "Archive" to "Yes". The app or (feature layer view used in the app) has a filter to just not show the Archive = Yes features? This is similar to the vetting function in the now deprecated Crowdsource Story Map. I am sure you've thought of many possibilities, but this seems like a logical approach and would benefit the end user greatly without losing any backend data. - Paul

Joel – Thank you for the fast response. I’ll to get a bug reported as soon as possible. I found this while creating an assignment for my University which means I need to work the administration as liaisons with Esri Support. As for the logout issue, it may have been an anomaly as I was unable to replicate. This is using ArcGIS Online, but authenticating using some kind of active directory. Paul

Upon investigation, it appears to be related to Premium / Subscriber content being authorized via ArcGIS Enterprise. Nothing I did to the pop-up configuration allowed me to see the pop-up in the Tapestry or Population Density layers. When I loaded a similar layer, but not subscriber content, the pop-ups worked without any issue. The layer I used instead was SVI 2014 https://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=f951e0df78604cf0ab1fda61a575be6b Is this a known issue or should I follow-up with Esri Support?

It appears that some pop-up configurations will not work in Explorer for ArcGIS. Example: https://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=eda0f20edc8448adaa3373cce237a57f (Esri Tapestry default pop-up) Device: iPhone 6 Software: Explorer for ArcGIS via ArcGIS Enterprise Error: If you click on a polygon, the pop-up never loads. Sometimes it is even logs me out of Explorer! Is this a known issue? Is there any documentation on what types of pop-up configurations will not work in Explorer?

Thanks Caitlin for the prompt response we really appreciate it. Since the NFHL layer that FEMA publishes only displays when zoomed in (large scale), we may have to re-host the data for visualization when zoomed out. Keep up the great work, the Living Atlas is really curating a lot of great information for emergency managers.

Living Atlas Team - We noticed today that the US Flood Risk layer is missing areas for Boulder, Colorado. Is it possible that the US Flood Risk layer is out of sync with the FEMA National Flood Hazard Layer? We were planning to use this layer during an upcoming flood exercise. Esri Layer www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=6b09b1c163c740559dc31cce9144222e FEMA NHFL (Red indicates availability - zoom in to see detailed layer) https://hazards.fema.gov/gis/nfhl/rest/services/public/NFHL/MapServer Thank you for looking into this and please let us know what you find pdoherty@publicsafetygis.org and tricec@bouldercolorado.gov
