Create maps. Share them as web apps. Start with these foundational skills and open up a world of possibilities with ArcGIS Online. Add data layers You add geographic data to maps through layers. Layers include not just the data but also the visualization such as symbols and colors and pop-up configurations. As an ArcGIS Online user, you have access to thousands of ready-to-use layers you can add to your map. You can also add you own as easily as dropping a spreadsheet on the map. ArcGIS Online automatically applies smart mapping, highlighting what's important in your data.  Try a quick exercise about adding data to a map. Choose a basemap A basemap provides the geographical context for your data layers and every map includes one. The basemaps that come with ArcGIS Online vary in theme and focus such as Streets at Night, Oceans, and Imagery with Labels, the all-time most popular basemap. Choose the one that best complements your data. View a Story Map about your basemap choices. Configure pop-ups Pop-ups reveal the data in your layers. By default, pop-ups show a plain list of all the attributes and values. As a best practice, you should configure the pop-ups to only show what's important. Watch a video about the value of decluttered pop-ups. Apply smart mapping Smart mapping suggests drawing styles for your layers such as colors and symbol size. The initial settings immediately show significant values within your data in order to help you explore and showcase important patterns. Keep the defaults or choose your own options. Before you share your map, you should edit the details to include an interesting summary, an in-depth description, and carefully considered tags, as well as to credit the source of the data. Create a web app ArcGIS Online offers a suite of web apps that can help bring your map to life for users. And the majority of your work is done once you've created your map. (If you don’t have any data, you can download the Downtown Trash Receptacles spreadsheet from Data Driven Detroit.) As documentation engineers, we spend most of our time writing help reference topics. In the weeks leading up to a software release, especially a big one like ArcGIS Online June 2017, we get to spend a fair amount of time reviewing other types of resources. This is one of our favorite tasks! We love seeing all the Story Maps, videos, blog articles, infographics, and exercises product teams create to show you what's new (and hopefully inspire you to give the new things a try). Whether you are just getting started with ArcGIS or a GIS veteran, we think there's a new resource you'll want to check out. Most highlight the latest functionality in the software. All are amazing!  Documentation page Of course we have to kick things off with a documentation resource: the new Documentation for ArcGIS page. It's a quick tool for finding that help site you're looking for. It includes a search, filters, and a language drop-down list.  Scene Viewer Story Map You may have read about what's new in Scene Viewer for ArcGIS Online June 2017. Did you notice the Story Map that showcases these features? If not, you'll definitely want to check it out! Hosted web layer infographics It can be daunting to decide whether to use hosted feature layers, hosted feature layer views, or hosted tiles in your maps and apps. Who would win? Match layer types to common workflows with these new infographics. Explorer for ArcGIS exercise Many of you have taken the Learn ArcGIS lesson, Get Started with ArcGIS Online. Now you can explore the same Hawaii island map to get started with Explorer for ArcGIS in a browser. Pretty cool.  Mapping and analysis exercise On the topic of Learn ArcGIS lessons, we like the more precise boundary for Fight Child Poverty with Demographic Analysis because it makes the demographic patterns stand out even more.
