This issue has been seen before, although we do not have a fix, a reboot normally solves this problem (it seems that Visual Studio does not gain the environment variable correctly when the SDK is installed). See: http://resources.arcgis.com/content/kbase?fa=articleShow&d=37176 Let me know if that doesnt solve the problem for you.

I'm wondering if this could be a firewall issue? This could well be the problem, as Explorer 1200 will retrieve a list of basemaps from the server (this is so they can be maintained dynamically, without needing to install a new Explorer). If you use a proxy server on your network, have you set up proxy details in Explorer? Go to Explorer button, ArcGIS Explorer Options, Advanced (see the help topic here for more info: http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisexplorer/1200//en/proxy_server_settings.htm).

I get an error. "Failed to add shapefile. (Unknown Coordinate System)". When you get this error, its indicating that the shapefile has no accompanying .prj file - this contains coordinate system information for a shapefile - Explorer will not assume a coordinate system, so you need to specify one. The prj file should have the same base filename as the rest of the files comprising the shapefile set. If you cannot get hold of an existing .prj file for the right coordinate system, you can use the Explorer SDK to create a .prj file (see the CoordinateSystem.ExportToPrjString method). It's probably easiest to just get an existing one though.

Hi Ethan, ArcGIS Explorer cannot create or edit shapefiles I'm afraid, and this will not change in the forthcoming new release. If you have ArcGIS Desktop available, that would be the best way to create a shapefile. Using the Explorer SDK it would be fairly simple to write an add-in that exports a folder of Point notes to a CSV text file, which could be imported into ArcMap as an X, Y layer - at that point you could use ArcGIS Desktop to perform the conversion to shapefile. I imagine there are also geoprocessing tools to do something similar (although I'm not very familiar with the range of tools available).

This is part of the 1500 release, supporting VS2010 pro as well as C# and VB.NET Express. We will not be re-releasing the 1200 SDK to support VS2010 - however, you should be able to take an existing add-in built in VS2008 and open it in VS2010, using the visual studio upgrade wizard, to run in VS2010.

If you dont mind the copyright showing up in the on-screen view as well, you could add an image overlay: http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisexplorer/1200/en/index.html#work_with_image_overlays.htm Alternatively, you could develop an add-in that did the printing for you, and added whatever copyright you want to that? If you deploy explorer using an Application Configuration, then you can prevent users from using the built-in Print command, and so they would have to use your alternative Print instead. There's a very basic print view add-in example on the code gallery here that could be adapted: http://resources.esri.com/arcgisexplorer/1200/index.cfm?fa=codeGalleryDetails&scriptID=16518

What you're using there is the internal API - this is unsupported, undocumented, not exposed in intellisense, and the most important thing is it's subject to change at any release. If you're happy using this in the current release and its working for you, then just be aware that in a future release your add-in might bomb, so make sure you recompile on all future releases and re-code/redistribute if necessary. Cheers,

There's no way to do this programmatically currently in Explorer, and the only workarounds I can think of would involve filtering the fields by creating a second feature class with only the required ones (I know it's not feasible for everyone). I have added this request for a future version of ArcGIS Explorer, although I'm afraid I think it's unlikely that it will make it in to the upcoming version (1500), because we already have a full development schedule.

Hi, Can you open one of the samples that's installed with the SDK (under your install directory, e.g.: \Program Files\Explorer\DeveloperKit\Samples\ApplicationConditions), and build a sample, and check if that shows up as expected in the Ribbon? (Anthony - the Explorer 1200 SDK supports .NET 2.0 SP1, not 3.5, hence the templates in the SDK target 2.0, regardless of the Framework option in the VS new project dialog - we're adding support for 3.5 in a future version of the SDK. Our reasoning is we dont force all Explorer users to the very latest version of the Framework, as that creates too high a bar for many large organisations who have tightly controlled desktop configurations. However you can target and use 3.5 if you know desktops your addin will run on will have that Framework installed). Shelly

Yep, you have the sample as it's installed, I posted code where I had added additional lines so you can try and see if something is failing, as you have Express and not professional Visual Studio so debugging is not supported out of the box. So try my code instead and see if any of the message boxes give you a clue as to what's going wrong.

Hi Nick, I'm using this Gallery Walkthrough and find its working fine for me in 2D and 3D views, in Visual Studio Express 2008. Clicking the drop-down list in the gallery, choose the Gallery item with the Information symbol, and you will see the mouse cursor changes to a cross-hair when you hover over the map. Then click on the map somewhere, and you should see a 'ray' display effect indicating where you clicked, and the information symbol is added to the map. If you show the gallery, but dont select a gallery item, then when you click on the map you will not see any 'ray' feedback highlighting where you just clicked, and the mouse cursor remains as a hand, indicating the map is just navigating. Could this possibly be what happened? If not, then ideally next you would debug the add-in - Visual Studio Express however does not offer out of the box functionality to debug DLLs within other EXEs, like you have with add-in projects. You can do the kind of 'debugging' where you show a lot of message boxes so you can see each line of code working - this would be worth a try - I have added some suggested things to check in the code below, taken from the Gallery class - recompile the add-in and give it another go. Hi, Add-Ins built against 900 and 1200 will continue to work in the next release. I'm afraid I cannot speak for releases years in the future however. I appreciate that the redevelopment of tasks between 500 and 900 was not ideal for existing users. The application itself had changed so much, including the internal architecture, it was simply not feasible in the end to maintain compatiblility of the API.

Hi there, ArcGIS Explorer does read .nmc files, and you can download it here: http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/explorer/index.html There is a different viewer application called ArcExplorer, I think this may be the one you have installed: http://www.esri.com/software/arcexplorer/index.html The names are very similar... it's not ideal, and I can understand why the two can easily be mixed up.

Hi, If you want to programmatically customize ArcGIS Explorer, you can download the free SDK from: http://resources.esri.com/arcgisexplorer/1200/index.cfm?fa=download An online version of the SDK documentation can be found here: http://resources.esri.com/help/1200/arcgisexplorer/conceptualhelp/index.html and API reference here: http://resources.esri.com/help/1200/arcgisexplorer/componenthelp/index.html#/_/000300000426000000/ I dont know any examples of doing exactly what you're after, but if you want to do something in ArcGIS Explorer at startup, I would suggest you take a look at making an Extension, and go from there: http://resources.esri.com/help/1200/arcgisexplorer/conceptualhelp/index.html#/creating_a_custom_extension/00020000003p000000/
