I was trying to add a new layer to the ArcGIS Online maps from my own server and now there appears to be no way to do this. I also now suddenly get a message that ArcGIS Online cannot add a layer because its not secure. Is this a new policy change? I really wish Esri would leave my stuff alone, how am I going to edit my webmaps now?

UPDATE: I was able to switch everything to the UNC path and it worked. Kind of a pain but it is what it is. Had to manually enter the path to add the folder connection. I have given both the current user and the ArcGIS Server Account full permissions and still have the same issue. The data is on a mapped network drive. I've looked into changing the source of the data to the UNC path but Pro doesn't seem to allow that or at least I can't figure out how to do it. I have also attempted to register the drive in Server Manager but that doesn't work either. I don't really understand this as I have used this method before in ArcMap from the same location (well the UNC path \\servername\) without issue just not in Pro.

Only visible on the Admin page. I wouldn't even have known about it if Support hadn't directed me to do it.

I worked with support on this. We tried what seemed like everything. What was eventually discovered is that there are two publishing services in the system folder. One called PublishingTools and one called PublishingToolsEx. The second one was stopped. We started it and it worked. I noticed that there is a similar thing for CachingTools and SyncTools as well. Can somebody explain what those extra services are and what they do? I've had no success so far finding out additional information and the Support Tech didn't really seem to know what the extra service was for or why it wasn't automatically started. In fact, you have to start the service using ArcGIS Server Administrator Directory as opposed to Server Manager.

Nope, no movement same issue. You say my problem is the server, but what exactly is the problem? I never had this issue before publishing these map services, why is it suddenly an issue?

Susan Its still having the same issue. Here are the errors in my log. I'm wondering if Thomas' point about secure services may be the issue, I hope not, but it may be. I am really happy that we are now able to publish directly to a local server in Pro. Things were working great until I tried to publish and got the following error: 2019-07-10 15:30:44 Status: InProgress StatusMessage: ERROR 999999: Error executing function. No Organization http://gis-server:6080/arcgis/admin acgis 2019-07-10 15:30:45 Status: InProgress StatusMessage: No resource could be found at that address. (status code 404). Not sure what is going on and with that generic error, no idea how to fix it. The same service published just fine last week. Publishing a new service as opposed to overwrite resulted in the same error. I have closed and reopened the project and rebooted both my desktop and my GIS server. I also tried this with a different map within the same project with the same result. A setting must have somehow been changed between now and last week but I can't think of what that might have been. I have included the log from the latest attempt.

The only surefire way of eliminating all locks is to stop all services. I've tried time and time again to figure this issue out and every time I discover its easier to shut everything down, make the appropriate changes and then restart the services.

Pro 2.3.2 and Excel 2010. I should note though that I've since heard that Pro 2.4 should address some of the issues with Excel that I'm experiencing.

Using the right click option is seemingly instantaneous, I tried to time it but it is probably a second or less. Unfortunately, when I tried the Add Join tool in ArcMap it gives me an error The error doesn't make any sense (it's an Excel table, it has no OID) and also means I cannot fully replicate the process used in Pro. I know this ventures away from Pro but any thoughts as to why the error is coming up? Perhaps this is similar to the issue Pro is having? On the awesome side, ArcMap seems to have no issues with working with an Excel table. I may just have to create this particular map in ArcMap for now. Don't you just love troubleshooting????

Kory, Here is the latest example. I wish mine was only 0.78 seconds. Now, to be fair, this was the one with the Excel table. I believe I did have a number of multiple maps, layouts, and tables open. I have since closed most and only have the required map and layout open but the overall performance has not improved. The multiple tabs open is about convenience, if this feature was working well it would be a major enhancement from ArcMap due to the ability to see multiple maps and layouts at the same time but it does make sense that that could be a contributing factor to lowered performance. Also, thanks for your comment about Excel at 2.4. I am looking forward to it. Also, note again that this 7.84 seconds does not count the time it took to open the tool in the geoprocessing window which was probably several seconds more at least. I can only guess at how long that part was. I also see the following the roadmap: Geoprocessing leveraging spatial databases - New options to run certain geoprocessing tools like Buffer, Spatial Join, Select, or Intersect as queries in databases that support these operations, which will result in improved performance. I'm hoping this will also help me out a lot.

This thread is getting hopelessly long and becoming hard to follow but I wanted to add my two cents. I too have really struggled with the "slowness" of ArcGIS Pro. It has many great features but even the most simple tasks seem to take much longer in Pro than ArcMap. The typical response from Esri seems to be contact Support. In my experience this has just been me going in circles trying to figure out what is wrong and Esri Support just guessing. I did not have this experience with Support with ArcMap. I know very little about system architecture so don't really understand what it means to be multi-threaded but if this is what multi-threaded means, then it is not a good thing. I also saw that network connections are to blame. I would venture a guess that the majority of Esri users have their data "on the network" because they run in an Enterprise environment. This is something that Esri has pushed for years by the way. I've specifically noticed that even simple geoprocessing tasks that would have taken seconds in ArcMap take 30 seconds plus in Pro. For example, joining a table to your data requires a geoprocessing window to open which usually has a delay and then after making the appropriate changes to the script, pushing run still takes several more seconds. Individual tasks taking seconds longer is no big deal but a series of them really adds up over the course of a day. My more recent experience has been with working with Excel tables in Pro. That is a totally different topic but still relates to poor performance in Pro. This process has been quite painful and has resulted in hours of frustration even though I have been following the advice in the Help section.

I have been trying to do this for the last hour. Pro is painfully slow at this. It says that Pro looks at the first row to determine field names but that is not the behavior I am seeing. I am also only able to see one of the worksheets in my Excel file and cannot open any others. The other worksheets do still have spaces in them but so did the first one originally. All I see are Field1, Field2 and so on. My original intention was to join the Excel table to a feature class and then either use a definition query or symobology to display the data the way I wanted. The source table is relatively large at 20000 records but I know Pro can handle more than that.

Are number of subscriptions looked at the same way ideas are looked at? As in the more people subscribed, potentially the higher the priority for fixing it would be? Or do you need to be attached to it?
