I figured out the issue on my own. There is a checkbox in the expression dialog box that asks if you want to Display coded value description. Unchecking allows my labels to go from Polyvinyl Chloride to PVC. I thought I'd post this in case others have run into this before. For those layers that I did drag and drop directly from the template, this was not the issue. I've seen this in other places before and this will greatly help me.

I am having some minor issues with labelling. In the Water Utility Network Editing map the labels for utility lines typically take the form of Diameter Abbreviated material. (8" PVC). When I copy the labelling expression directly from the template into my own map, I suddenly end up with 8"" Polyvinyl Chloride. This has something to do with the Coded Value Domain. I would prefer to use the shortened version but can't figure out how this is done. By the way, I also corrected the additional quotes in my label so there isn't a double quote (8" instead of 8""). I guess I could use the Abbreviate label feature of Maplex and could create an abbreviation dictionary but it doesn't appear that was needed in the template. The attached image shows that the full label is a bit overpowering at 1:1128.

I have an issue with unused domains in my file geodatabase. I have partially implemented the Local Government Information Model so it added a number of new domains. Now I have some old domains that I would really like to remove to avoid any confusion. I have come up with a list of about 8 domains that I would like to remove. Trouble is that I always get an error message: Failed to delete a domain from the database. The domain is used as a default domain. I cannot gaurantee that I don't still have a default set somewhere but I don't think I do. I can't understand what I need to do to remove this "lock" so that I can clean things up. It seems that this is just a waste of space and possible performance killer.

I cannot get the Water Utility Network toolbars to show up. The attribute assistant updates went just fine and the new toolbar appears. The other two toolbars are not in the list and do not appear in the add-in even after re running the AddIn File. The previous Infrastructure Reporting and Editing toolbars are still available. Do I need to unistall these older ones first?

I'm not using sde so this probably isn't the issue for me. Plus the problem just suddenly appeared. I'll check into sp 1.

I solved my own question - the output folder did not have the local arcgis user added with permissions. I'm having the same error, what output folder are you referring to, maybe we're talking about something different but I'm trying to publish a service. The service starts automatically unlike what the error states but I still get this odd error that I don't normally get when serving a table in a map service. This new table is from the same geodatabase as other layers in this map service.

I keep getting this error when I start editing: Error on Start Editing Event: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. This is an odd error, I am still able to make and save edits even with this warning. I am using ArcGIS 10.1 and also the Attribute Assistant Add-In, although at the moment it is disabled, probably because I'm editing a shapefile on its way to a geodatabase. This is not the first time this has happened though, it has happened in a geodatabase as well with the add in enabled. This appears to be a bug but I wondered if anyone else had this issue, I need to figure out if it is the feature class or if it is the add in.

I'm having some issues with some users not being able to print the basemap layers. The map shows the operational layers and all of the layout elements fine but the baselayers don't show up in the PDF. When I go to do the same task, I am able to see this just fine. Is there some setting that may be causing some users to not be able to see the basemaps?

I still haven't figured this out, does anyone have a solution for me. This seems like a bug but I'm not really sure. It seems that if I have Create tiles on demand checked, it should continue to draw the tiles without having to recache. Is there any reason why the drawing wouldn't work? I have overwritten the services since then, for the next time it gets completely recached, is this maybe the problem??

I'm having issues with a cached service that is supposed to be drawing on demand. I precached to the current extent of the map which was basically my area of interest. I've noticed that when I leave the precached area, they tiles are blank. I have the checkbox Create tiles on demand checked on the Advanced Settings tab in the Service editor. For the tiles in the current extent of the map listed, everything is great. In 10.0 this option also worked, what do I have set that is not allowing the tiles to create on demand? I would think that if somebody went to an non cached area in the Flex viewer that after a few minutes they would see the tile created. I also have tried to get this to draw in ArcCatalog preview and by bringing the service into ArcMap, nothing seems to work. I will attempt to cache another area that is not cached currently using an feature class and we'll see what happens and add the update here. UPDATE: Well that update using the ManageMapServerCacheTiles tool and recreating empty tiles within a area of interest, did nothing that I can see. I even restarted the service, cleared the internet cache viewed it in both ArcCatalog and ArcMap and nothing happened in these new areas at all.

This issue was fixed by using the Local Government Basemap Templates along with Attribute Assistant. Definition queries were used based on the shape area and this has been resolved using that method. Still leaves some to be desired as size doesn't necessarily dictate importance of labelling but in general, it works for my needs.

Actually, it appears I have everything done. I was able to connect to a database that I had previously created in SQL Server when I had tried this in the past. It needed to be upgraded to 10.1 but it did that without issue and I was able to import a feature class without issue and add it to ArcMap. Did I miss anything though by not getting through the previous steps?

Well the previous problem is fixed but now I'm still confused please see the following results of pasting the codes into command line. esri_sde service was successfully created and registered but I don't understand the next set of problems. So I guess I created the registry key for the service but apparently not create an ADMIN_DATABASE value in the registry for the service?? I was able to start a local ArcSDE service on Windows though. Wow, I never thought this would be so complicated to set up. There needs to be a wizard for this setup that automatically creates these entries. The install for ArcGIS for Server did this for me with less issues. How do I just get this finished so that I can actually start using sde?? Hi Josh, Are you installing Enterprise ArcSDE technology manually? What release of ArcSDE are you installing? Typically the ArcSDE post-install wizard take care of these steps. Please see step #7 in this Esri KnowledgeBase article: KB #23821 - How To: Manually install ArcSDE for Oracle on Windows Hope this helps, I was just going down through the steps in the Install Guide. It wasn't clear whether this was required or not. I'll look for the post-install wizard and skip this step. Esri has GOT to figure out a way to make installing its products easier. Many parts of the installation have custom or advanced settings that should be something you do optionally after the initial install. The release is 10.1

I'm not sure if this is the best forum or if the Geodatabase & SDE forum is best but since its an installation/setup issue, I thought I'd post this here. I'm going through the Install guide installing sde and come to the Editing service files on Windows step . I'm able to get rid of the comment code mentioned in Step 2 but I don't understand what Step 3 means. 3-Open the Windows services file. 4-Copy the service entry you defined in the services.sde file and paste it into the Windows service file. 5-Save and close both services files. Where is the Windows services file? This is my first time installing sde so I'm not exactly sure on the exact set up I need.
