Hi, To take advantage of advanced editing functionality, such as topology, you will need to import the shapefile into a geodatabase as a feature class. Topology editing is supported at ArcEditor and ArcInfo license levels of ArcGIS. Fundamentals of editing http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#//001t00000001000000.htm An overview of topology in ArcGIS http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#/An_overview_of_topology_in_ArcGIS/006200000001000000/ Topology basics http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#/Topology_basics/ Cheers, Denise

Are you exporting to PDF from Layout view? In ArcMap Layout view, use Insert > Legend option and select symbology to be included in Legend; then from File > Export Map dialog change Save as File Type to PDF and finish wizard. The resulting PDF displays the Legend with desired symbology. Cheers, Denise

Hi Kevin, ArcPad recognizes NMEA 0183 version 2.0 or higher sentences. $GPRMC is one of the NMEA 0183 sentences recognized by ArcPad by default, http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcpad/10.0/help/index.html#//00s1000000zz000000.htm. Actual description of $GPRMC is Recommend minimum specific GPS/Transit data whereas $GPZDA description is Time and Date. What GPS sentences are being received in ArcPad's GPS Debug tool? http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcpad/10.0/help/index.html#//00s1000000z6000000.htm As you are probably aware, most GPS receivers output a limited number of NMEA 0183 sentences and ArcPad uses data from a number of NMEA 0183 sentences to display all of the information in the GPS Position Window as well as to populate the fields associated with the GPS Tracklog. When information is not displayed in the GPS Position Window it is usually the result of ArcPad not receiving the required NMEA 0183 sentence from the receiver. The Trimble Nomad supports NMEA and SiRF binary GPS protocols. Do you have the device set to output the NMEA or SiRF GPS protocol? Is ArcPad set to the same GPS protocol as being output by the device in GPS Preferences window? Is the GPS set on COM2 at 9600 baud? Please review the Trimble Support document below to see if it helps you configure your Nomad GPS receiver with ArcPad. http://trl.trimble.com/docushare/dsweb/Get/Document-462176/MCS_SprtNote_Nomad_Built-in_GPS.pdf If you should need further assistance and have current ArcPad maintenance, please log a support incident with Esri Support Services, http://support.esri.com/en. You can choose phone, fax, email, webform, or chat options to speak with an ArcPad specialist. Thanks, Denise

Hi Aaron, This isn't done from within ArcMap, you would use the Trimble GPS Analyst License Administrator software for this purpose. Please review Chapter 2 of the Getting Started Guide for Trimble GPS Analyst Extension, http://trl.trimble.com/docushare/dsweb/Get/Document-512365/GPSAnalyst_GSG_ENG.pdf. Starting at page 30 you will find information on installing the Mapping and GIS License Manager software. For more information search for the topic, GPS Analyst License Administrator, in the Trimble GPS Analyst Extension Help. Cheers, Denise

Hi Joanna, What ArcGIS version and service pack is installed? What license level is used? What StreetMap product are you using? Esri StreetMap Premium or Pro? Navteq or Tele Atlas? What year and release information is listed on DVD? Are you using the Data Distribution Application (DDA) utility to convert SDC data to another format? What errors are returned? If your product maintenance is current, please contact Esri Support, http://support.esri.com/en/, to log your support request and be assisted by one of the analysts. Esri Support now has phone, fax, email, web and chat options for you to work with support analysts to troubleshoot your issue. Thank you, Denise

Hi Nick, If working with scale-dependent symbology in ArcPad, you can specify the minimum and maximum display scales for a layer's symbology via Symbology Properties dialog. You can also set minimum and maximum display scales for an entire layer and for the labels of a layer. See the ArcPad Reference Guide for more information. Cheers, Denise

Hi Nick, Yes but would be helpful if we knew what ArcPad version you are using and what iPAQ device used as there are compatibility concerns between ArcPad and Windows Mobile OS of the iPAQ device. Typically, a user can connect to the GPS from within ArcPad using the Find GPS utility. Once connected and GPS is on and running, open ArcPad and select GPS > GPS Preferences > GPS tab and run Find GPS utility (black binoculars) to search for the connected GPS. Please review the ArcPad Help for more information. Cheers, Denise

Hi Nick, This would be dependent upon the Garmin GPS unit being set to output NMEA GPS sentences as ArcPad doesn't support Garmin's proprietary GPS format. Once connected and GPS on and running, open ArcPad and select GPS > GPS Preferences > GPS tab and run Find GPS utility (black binoculars) to search for the connected GPS. Please review the ArcPad Help for more information. Cheers, Denise

How much of the schema is modified when you modify the data in the GDB after checkin? Depending on how much the schema has changed, you should be able to re-use the customizations from previous AXF checkout when subsequently performing checkouts by utilizing Layer Definition Template checkbox as shown in screenshot below. When checked, the Open Layer dialog is displayed allowing you to choose an existing Layer Definition from a shapefile or ArcPad AXF file to be used as a template. This allows you to re-use forms, scripts, icons, and other layer definition elements. Cheers, Denise

You might be running into CQ00312586; 'Changing the TOC layer name renders the list of available photo fields (in Check Out Wizard) empty' which is actively being investigated by ArcPad team. Possible workaround is to change the layer name back to original name and re-add to ArcMap map document, then perform data check out to ArcPad and the photo fields are available as expected. If this is the behavior you are experiencing, please contact Esri Support Services via Esri Support site links for phone, email, webform, or chat http://support.esri.com/en to have your information added to the CQ. If you are experiencing other behavior and have current ArcPad maintenance, please feel free to submit your question to help troubleshoot this issue. Please include ArcPad version, service pack or build information and provide screenshots of errors or dialogs which illustrate behavior you are reporting. Thank you, Denise

Yes, by installing Trimble's Mapping and GIS License Manager software on a network server, you can manage multiple licenses for the GPS Analyst extension. Using the GPS Analyst License Administrator software, GPS Analyst extension users can choose either a Single Use or a Floating license. http://trl.trimble.com/docushare/dsweb/Get/Document-512365/GPSAnalyst_GSG_ENG.pdf Cheers, Denise

Background layers can NOT be checked in, even if they are made editable. Editable background layers should be considered only for special circumstances such as the example given in Help topics below. Example: an arborist is collecting information about trees along a street. For the best map drawing performance, the streets layer should be a read only background layer, the trees, checked out for editing. However, if the arborist is also asked (out of courtesy) to report any new subdivisions that are not mapped, by giving the arborist an editable background AXF, they can use the database rules for creating the new street (including filling in the attribute form) and return the information to the team responsible for streets. That team can then choose how to incorporate this well formed data, into their own database, which is likely to be separate to the arborists database. http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcpad/10.0/help/index.html#/Get_Data_for_ArcPad/00s100000068000000/ http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcpad/10.0/help/index.html#/Get_Data_from_ArcPad/00s10000006r000000/ I also recommend reading Check Out or Copy Out in ArcPad topic from ArcPad Blog which describes the check in/out processes with editable and non-editable background layers, http://arcpadteam.blogspot.com/2009/08/check-out-or-copy-out-in-arcpad-8.html. Hope this helps, Denise

Hi Nelson, One suggestion, check the parameters of the destination type via Feature Type Properties window, does changing the Allowed Geometries to "geodb_polygon" result in correct output or does it generate same error? The GeometryCoercer transformer can't be directly used to convert donut polygons to lines. If you need to do this, extract the donut parts first using the DonutHoleExtractor transformer. Thanks, Denise
