I had a feeling that might be the case. I had tried to make it with two maps at first but the size of the shapefiles must have been the problem. I'll make (yet another) new version from two separate maps. Adjusting all of the legend and pop-up details is tedious, though. Thanks for your help!!!

Here's a link to the new mapping application, lightened by turning shapefiles into Feature Layers: http://arcg.is/1IqToSu Still experiencing the problem with the underneath layer showing on the right side. There are some places in the % graduating layer without data (and associated polygons), so there are "holes" in this layer, but I did not think that would matter.

It usually takes me a few retries. Good tip on the Feature Services. I have done that before, just hadn't got around to it for this data yet. I'll see if that helps the loading issues.

This is the map with the swipe problem: http://csusm-gis-lab.maps.arcgis.com/apps/StorytellingSwipe/index.html?appid=4a358aa5309f413195a999dd17b047aa You'll notice when you swipe the bar far to the west that there are some blue/green polygons that show through the right side orange layers. I don't want those blue/green polygons to show. This map also has problems loading. I usually have to retry a few times to get it to display. This will be a big problem for the customers and end users of the map. I deleted the swipe map made from two separate webmaps, but I'll try creating another one. Thanks! Allen

I am working with the Story Map Swipe template, trying to display and swipe two layers from one web map. The layer on the left side of the swipe bar displays correctly. However, the right side of the swipe bar displays the appropriate layer on top of the display but I can see the left-hand side layer showing through the top layer. How can I make the swipe map show one layer exclusively on each side of the bar? I tried creating the swipe map using two separate maps but the template kept crashing. Sorry - my original post was a bit confusing. We understand how to symbolize the layer once the membership data was entered - not a problem there. But as I was going through the steps of the task I ran up against something that I saw as a problem with the ArcGIS Online symbology. When I loaded the World Countries layer I expected it would allow me to assign random colors to all the countries in the layer (254 of them). But once you reach 200 it stops, unlike ArcMap on the desktop.

The intent is not to use the colors to identify the countries from a legend. The intent is to color the countries somewhat randomly, so that bordering counties are clearly seen as being separate. What I would like to be able to do is simply have random colors applied to the countries, similar to this map. http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0071/5032/products/World_Maps_International_20mil_1.jpg?v=1413619116 Here's the Feature Service I'm working with: http://csusm-gis-lab.maps.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=01c4d9bf9c7a4ad79ec7bd7afa0c2316 How would you symbolize this in ArcGIS Online, so that contiguous countries have recognizably different colors, given the attribute fields that are available? It's done quite easily in ArcMap.

I am working with a student who would like to create a map using ArcGIS Online that shows the number of members of an organization in the various countries of the world. My plan was to give the student a zipped shapefile of the World Countries Generalized map layer, with extra fields added for them to enter their data. I made the shapefile, zipped it and uploaded it to a map on ArcGIS Online to test it out. When I loaded the shapefile and was prompted to Change Style, I tried to use Types (Unique Symbols) to assign different random colors to the countries. About ten countries were assigned colors and the rest were put in the Other category. I have worked with this in the past and scrolled down to Other to click on the double arrow in order to "Move values out". Unfortunately, once it hit 200 countries in the symbology list it stopped. There is a message that says: "There are more than 200 unique values. Values not listed here will still display on the map in this category". I guess this means that I have to decide which countries are going to be shaded grey as "Other"? Or is there a work-around to this? I have no idea why the Fallbrook layer would act differently. It was created and has the same attributes as the others.

Eureka! The Oceanside layer that was added to the map was *not* a feature service - it was a "feature collection". When I publish the saved data layers to feature services ArcGIS Online also creates an item called a "feature collection". Each published data layer has two items listed in "My Content" - a "feature service" and a "feature collection". Both items have the same name and are listed as type "Feature Layer", but they have different properties when you choose to view the item details. This becomes very confusing when you are trying to edit the feature service/layer/collection and add it to a map. I am now going back into "My Content" to rename the feature collections so as to lessen the confusion (for me). Thanks for your help. I'm still not sure if the students can edit the feature service data. But I think I'm getting closer.

Thanks for checking it out and for the tip on the URL. And yes, the Fallbrook layer is editable, but the Oceanside one isn't and I can't tell why not. Did you look at that one? (Vista and San Marocs are editable as far as I can tell).

I am past the point of frustration. I am trying to provide GIS support to a class at my university that is creating a food source map. I have created a map and shared it to the class group. (Actually, I have no shared it to "Everyone" in order to make it easier to get help). Here is the map: http://csusm-gis-lab.maps.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=c982294b84c740879da7a3fa857e1f5c The map contains a series of feature services. The students in the class are supposed to click on the markers on the map (food stores), click on "Edit" and then enter data into several blank fields (ratings of the amount and quality of types of food in the stores). For some feature services the "Edit" prompt appears, for others it does not. I need help figuring out why or why not. I created the feature services by importing CSV files into the map, saving the layers, then publishing the layers as feature services. I have shared the layers and feature services to the class group. I have gone into the details for each feature service and chose to make the service editable. I have enabled editing on the layers in the map. I have deleted the original imported layer and then "Added" the feature service. Still I get some that work and some that do not. Help?!?

Hi All, I manage the ArcGIS Online organizational account at Cal State University San Marcos. I have a student who has an account under our org. I have added this student to our Community Analyst Users group on ArcGIS Online but he is unable to log in to Community Analyst Online. Here's a screen shot of the error message he receives. I have deleted him from the CA Users group and added him back in, but to no avail. I tested my access to Community Analyst Online and it worked. And I worked with a class of 15 new ArcGIS Online users yesterday with new accounts, gave them access to CA and they were able to use it, so I know CA works under our org account and works for users who were recently added to the CA group. Does anybody have an idea what to do next of how to fix this?

Hi Katie, I don't see an option for "allow others to save a copy of this item" (possibly because it is a feature layer?), but I did check the box for "allow others to export this item". That option allows other users to export a zipped copy of the shapefile. So here's my work-around: Share the original shapefile to the class group. Instruct the students to download the zipped shapefile to their own computer/network space. Open a map and use the "Add layer from file" option to load the shapefile that they just downloaded. This will give them their own copy of the shapefile/layer. They can then enable editing on this layer in order to add their own values. Thanks for your help - got me moving in the right direction. Allen

I am providing support to a class at my university that is using ArcGIS Online to create maps of world countries. I have created a world countries feature layer that has empty fields where they can add their own data. How do I allow the students to have their own copies of this feature layer so they can add their own personal data, independent of their classmates? Right now, I have shared the feature layer to the class group and have made it editable but they are over-writing each others' edits. Thanks in advance for your help, Allen Risley California State University San Marcos
