AGEO also allows you to add text labels to your map - Map Viewer does not.

http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/explorer-online This is sad news (to me). I have shown many classes of students how to make map presentations in ArcGIS Explorer Online. Two classes that I know of currently have final project assignments of making AGEO map presentations, and our semester ends AFTER Dec. 10th. I'm not looking forward to the conversations with those faculty members. Will the ArcGIS.com Map Viewer be adding a presentation mode? AGEO's map presentations are qualitatively different from story maps, so don't make that suggestion. Can an Esri representative address this, please? Thanks, Allen Risley GIS Lab Manager California State University San Marcos

**bump** I set this task aside to work on other things, but now back at it. I am still unable to add items from Esri's default gallery to the gallery of my organizational account. Additionally, when I am logged in to my organizational account and then go to look at the ArcGIS.com home page, I get logged out of my organizational account. So there's no way for me to share items from the ArcGIS.com gallery to one of my personal groups. Is there anyone at Esri who knows how to do this? Feeling very frustrated with the changes to ArcGIS Online. Allen I am an administrator of the organization, and when I choose "Edit Settings" from the "My Organization" page, the choose the "Gallery" tab, I see no way to point to the Esri default gallery. Are there more steps I am missing? Thanks, Allen

ArcGIS Online lacks the Presentation mode that ArcGIS Explorer Online has. I have had students create a map presentation that tells a story, similar to what you can do with the story map template, but much easier to learn. I am also having this problem. I have a faculty member who wants to use ArcGIS Explorer Online in her classes, but she needs to be able to change the symbology of her shapefiles to Unique Values. I have tested this function using my ArcGIS online organizational account (both an administrator and a user account) and using a free public account. The outcome is always the same: spinning doohicky next to "Finding Values". Left it for an hour and it still didn't find the values in an 18-record shapefile. I used AGEO to do this exact same function a year ago when I taught the same class. It worked fine. Now it doesn't. Without the ability to change the symbology of her data, AGEO is of little use to her. Is this product being left to wither on the vine? *bump* I work with a large number of first-time GIS users, providing technical support to university classes that use ArcGIS.com to provide GIS enhancement to non-GIS content courses. In the past we had the students create free accounts and we added them to groups we created for each course. Now we will be creating organizational accounts for these students. With the old free accounts, the Map Gallery that users saw included examples from a wide variety of ArcGIS Online users and was a great place to send students to see the many topics that GIS could be applied to. With the organizational accounts, our students are limited to seeing only maps from our organization in their Gallery. We have some good maps for them to look at, but would prefer to be able to show students the public Map Gallery. Is there a way this can be done? Hosted feature services don't currently support time. It's something we want to support and will release when available. So, there is no hosted way to support time aware layers. You need to have ArcGIS Server currently to do this. When you "share as" from ArcMap, you get a tiled map service by default. You need to explicitly enable the feature service capability (and optionally turn off tiles if you don't want them). Thanks, Mike Thanks for the clarity on these topics. If I were in charge of the "to do" list, time-enabled data support would be near the top! Thanks, Allen

ArcGIS Online hosted tiled map services don't currently support time enabled layers. Thanks, Mike How about an ArcGIS Online hosted feature service? Will that support a time-enabled layer? I'm not sure at what point in the "Share as...Service" process my layer became a tiled map service. I was trying to share a hosted feature service. So I guess the question is: Is there a way to take a time-enabled layer that was created in ArcMap 10.1 and share that layer on ArcGIS Online (and ArcGIS Explorer Online)? I have been digging through the documentation in ArcGIS.com Help and I haven't found any reference to time-enabled data, either yes or no. Thanks, Allen

I've tried to do something similar with a personal account and no ArcGIS server, without much success. I found this tutorial, on the esri site. Not sure if it addresses your problem but hopefully it can help. Sarah That is a great tutorial, and is pretty much what I am doing up until the point where he talks about creating a map service definition file. I can't find a way to create that file in ArcMap without knowing Python scripting (which I don't). It seems like what I am trying to do should be a function supported in ArcGIS Online, without having to use Python? Thanks for the link! Allen

Hello, I have a time-enabled data layer that I constructed in ArcMap (U.S. State Weekly Flu Data for the 2010-2011 season). I am able to use the Time Slider window in ArcMap to display the data week-by-week. I am also able to export the map as a video file which shows the time series of data. What I want to do now is make the time-enabled data available to students who are using ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Explorer Online, so they can map maps or map presentations based on the flu data. I have shared a map that contains the flu layer as a map service to my ArcGIS Online account. It is an organizational account and I am the administrator. When I open the map service in ArcGIS Explorer Online, it only displays one week of the data, chosen arbitrarily (as far as I can tell). There is no time slider. When I go into the details of the map service it lists a separate layer, and when I click on that layer I get a prompt to create a feature layer, which I do. That layer is then added to the map. It has a time slider, but on data displays on the map. The URL for the map service is: http://tiles.arcgis.com/tiles/uEH09Hfm70zI2ZxR/arcgis/rest/services/Flu_Data_2010_2011/MapServer?token=xTmu1a6gx0u1gdlCnwacWHrx_9dzqN8GUY0fy7QzCH263Lp4J0L6GTUjvlurSR3a Any help is appreciated. Are you in layout view? Make sure you're in data view. Is the Service option still greyed out? That did the trick! I didn't see that in the documentation. If it isn't there, it should be. Thank you very much for the quick response!! Allen

Hello, I am trying to publish a hosted feature service using an ArcMap document. I am following the steps outlined in the ArcGIS.com online help: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/arcgisonline/index.html?ESRISessionID=gcH3DU2twah6UqqQuaRC2B6nezWQ-cMGoOcB_nllMT-pP0-UOEZh9vRPWOVUA87sxa8=#/Publishing_a_hosted_feature_service_using_an_ArcMap_document/010q00000087000000/ I have an ArcGIS Online organizational account (I am the Administrator) and I am running ArcMap 10.1 (Advanced). I go through steps 1 through 3 with no problem, I am signed on to ArcGIS.com. When I get to step 4 (Click File > Share As > Service.), I cannot choose "Service", as it is greyed out. Any ideas why I can't publish this way? Thanks, Allen Risley Academic Technology Support California State University San Marcos

Several of the campus users who would like to use our ArcGIS Online organizational account have balked at doing so because of this organizational control issue. These users are faculty members who have created their own content previously with an ArcGIS Online personal account and do not want that content to become property of the group. They intend to make use of the organizational account services/resources during a particular semester, but then may not make use of the resources. What should they do? If they keep their personal account and create a new organizational account, will they be able to transfer content between the accounts? This issue of ownership of intellectual property is a big one.
