Hi Allen The best solution that I can see for both our cases is that the individual user (in your case the students) would open a group with their name. Then they invite you to their group. When they publish, they can check your group in their 'sharing' window and then send you the link to their work. This way only you and them can see the work, and their work is one click away for you. Cheers JM I agree, JM. But it isn't very efficient (or elegant) to have to set up/manage 40 separate groups for a 40-student class. It would be much easier if you could simply search for a user and share with them individually. Thanks, Allen

I don't want users to be able to edit the geometry - I only want them to be able to edit the attributes. For example, change the value in the 2012_Vote field from blank to "Obama" or "Romney". It works properly in Explorer Online, but does not work in the regular map function on ArcGIS Online. That's what I'm trying to get help with. Thanks! Allen

I'm working with an electoral politics class at our university that wants to have an electoral vote map that can be edited by students. I created a feature service by uploading a zipped shapefile directly into my ArcGIS Online account. My account is attached to the university's organizational account. I modified the settings for the feature service to make it editable. The feature service *can* be edited if you add it to a map in ArcGIS Explorer Online. However, if you use ArcGIS Online ("My Map") to create your map, the feature service *cannot* be edited. The URL for the feature service is: http://services.arcgis.com/uEH09Hfm70zI2ZxR/arcgis/rest/services/USA_States_Electoral_Votes/FeatureServer/0 Can you help me figure out if there is a step I am missing in setting this up? JM, I would also like to be able to have the capability to share maps with one other person. I support faculty who use AGOL in their classes. Students have AGOL accounts and create maps as part of an assignment. Instructors would like to have the students turn in their maps by sharing the map only with the instructor. No can do. One way to get this to work is to create a group that only has 2 members: you and the person you want to share with. Of course, if you have 40 students, creating 40 2-person groups seems a bit silly. But maybe the 2-person group strategy will work for your situation. Good luck! Allen Risley Academic Technology Support California State University San Marcos

OK, I took the original U.S. Congressional District file and fixed the projection problem. Then I selected the Colorado districts and exported a shapefile. That file successfully imported to Community Analyst. I'm concluding that the problem was a projection problem. I think the file you created may have too many vertices - when I overlay it with the full U.S. file that I have, your file is much more detailed. Thanks for your help! Allen

Hi Jason, I get the same error message when I try to import your file as well: "Unable to read polygons from shapefile. Invalid data." Are you able to successfully upload it to Community Analyst? Thanks, Allen

They are Congressional District polygons for Colorado. I started with the shapefile "cgd112p020.shp" that I downloaded from NationlAtlas.gov - metadata is here: http://nationalatlas.gov/metadata/cgd112p020.faq.html I don't know how the scale was set to 1:35. How would this happen?

Back again - I'm having problems again importing Shapefiles into Community Analyst. This time, they are Congressional District boundaries for the State of Colorado. I started with the original boundaries, received the error message: "Unable to read polygons from shapefile. Invalid data." I went back and ran the Simplify Polygon tool, since that had worked before. After running this and uploading a new file I still get this error message: "Unable to read polygons from shapefile. Invalid data." I'm attaching both .zip files - maybe you can help me figure out what's wrong with these? CO_CGD_112.zip - original boundary file CO_CGD_112_v4.zip - simplified boundary file. Thanks in advance! Allen

Is it possible to add video clips to pop-ups? I have a professor I am working with who wants her students to create maps of locations from short films they are producing. It would be best if the pop-ups associated with the placemarks could contain video clips from the films. Is it possible to do this in ArcGIS Explorer online? Thanks in advance, Allen Risley Academic Technology Support California State University San Marcos

Thank you Jason, that did the trick! It would have been good if an error message had popped up to tell me that. I have had messages come up when the file size is too large or the number of points/polygon is too high. Maybe vertices can get an error message as well? Thanks again, Allen

Hello, I have a shapefile that I am trying to upload to Community Analyst. It is a polygon file of school districts, the zip file is 1.5MB. When I click on the "Import" button, nothing happens. I am able to successfully import this zipped shapefile into ArcGIS Explorer Online, which tells me that the file is not damaged (at least, not for ArcGIS Explorer Online). I have been able to successfully import other zipped shapefiles into Community Analyst. File is attached. Any idea what the problem is? Thanks, Allen Risley Cal State University San Marcos

The blog post makes me quite nervous. It looks like this is a back-door way to remove Explorer Online. I hope Explorer Online is not going away. I use it in university classes that I teach and for which I provide support. The query tool and presentation feature are unique and make this a much better introduction to ArcMap than the standard ArcGIS.com map viewer. I'm right in the middle of working with several faculty members on "GIS enhancement" to their non-GIS, non-Geography courses. Explorer Online is a central tool for us. I need to know whether it will be there in the future or not.

Allen, One way is to go to http://www.arcgis.com and towards the bottom click the "Map" hyperlink to the right of "Maps for Personal Use" Good luck! Robert LeClair Esri-Denver There is no "Maps for Personal Use" on the screen I get at www.arcgis.com. I think that's what it looked like before last week. I'm attaching a screen shot of what I get now. Clicking on "Make a Map" takes me to the standard map viewer. Am I missing something obvious? Thanks, Allen

I was on vacation last week, and now that I'm back I see that the ArcGIS Online main page has changed. There is no longer a link to ArcGIS Explorer Online, as far as I can tell. How do I get to AGEO? Thanks, Allen
