Hello, I have a shapefile I would like to import into Business Analyst/Community Analyst to use as part of a Smart Map Search. I go through the steps of importing a shapefile, but then I get a warning/error message that says that the shapefile has more than 100 records so only the first 100 will be imported. Not great, but I decide to proceed in order to see what I get. When I click on the "OK" button, nothing happens. That's not OK. Any idea what is happening? I'm using Survey 123 Connect to create a tool to collect information on my college campus. The World Topographic map does not have detail for our campus - just roads. Is there any way I can display Open Street Map or Imagery basemaps? I have selected them in Survey 123 Connect but they do not appear on my survey once it is deployed. I have added some images to answer choices in multiple choice questions using Survey123 Connect. The images are far too large and cause lots of scrolling for smartphone users. How can I get the images to display smaller? Thanks!! Allen Risley Cal State University San Marcos

Is there a timetable on when the basemap configuration will be enabled? Both the web authoring interface and Survey123 Connect give you the option of choosing the basemap, so it seems like it is something the developers intend for users to do. This is causing me lots of problems with my clients. The default map provides very little context for users of our survey.

I am viewing it via the Survey123 for ArcGIS web page, the Survey123 Connect app Form Preview and on my smartphone (accessed by scanning the QR code). I'm not looking at the field app (smartphone app?) because we don't expect anyone will use that to access the survey. Most use will be by scanning the QR code on a phone or following a link on a computer or smartphone. This is a tool for reporting smoking behavior on our (designated smoke-free) university campus. Reporters will get to the survey either by 1) scanning a QR code on "Smoke-Free Campus" signage or 2) accessing a link on the department web page or 3) Accessing a link from inside our campus smartphone app. We want to know the locations where smoking is happening in order to place signage. There is no plan to use it to send out enforcement officers. We expect that we will get a mix of real-time reports using a smartphone and reports via the web page after the reporter has returned to their desk. The reporters are not GIS professionals, so we need to have a foolproof interface and non-verbose instructions. Here's the link to the survey: https://arcg.is/1qTirH

I have created several surveys using the Survey123 web design tool. When using the web tool and setting up a Geopoint question you are able to select a default map, set the home location, and set the zoom level for the map. In Survey123 Connect I went to Settings/Map and chose the default map (OpenStreetMap) but when I run the survey on my smartphone I get a different map by default. There's a thumbnail where the user can tap through basemap choices, but I don't want to have to explain this in the survey. It's important for our project that OpenStreetMap be the default map as it displays building footprints and labels for our campus, while other basemaps do not. Thanks! I love that Survey123 automatically creates word clouds from multi-line and single line text responses. What I don't like is that the word clouds include common words (articles, pronouns, etc.). that obscure the useful data. Is there any way to customize these word clouds? I had previously used Snap2Map with classes that were collecting photographs that they wanted to place on maps and had great success with it. I was (and still am) disappointed that Snap2Map was discontinued because I thought it provided a very simple entree into making a Story Map Tour. But your Survey123 recommendation is a very good one and I will migrate some classes to that solution. I meet Monday with a Spanish Sociolinguistics class that will be taking photos of Spanish language signage. Survey123 will allow them to collect the photo data and will allow me to program in some directed questions to provide metadata for the photos. Thanks! Allen Risley Cal State University San Marcos

I have a shapefile that I use regularly in ArcGIS Desktop (now 10.5.1) and the shapefile lines up properly with the ArcGIS Imagery basemap. The shapefile is projection is Lambert Conformal Conic, projected coordinate system is NAD_1927_StatePlane_California_VI_FIPS_0406 . When I add the shapefile to a map in ArcGIS Pro 2.0 with the ArcGIS Imagery basemap I get different results. The features in the shapefile are shifted about 260 ft to the west. I'm assuming that this is a projection problem and that I need to reproject the shapefile, but I'm confused as to why the results would be different between ArcGIS Desktop 10.5.1 and ArcGIS Pro 2.0. Any ideas?

I'm thinking that you are right - it's probably not the story map. I have never had this problem, but I have an Android phone and usually inspect photos before uploading them. These students may very well have been using an iPhone for the pictures. I will add a step to the procedure where they inspect the photos before uploading them. Thanks for the idea. AR

I am working with a class of students who are creating story map tours using photos that they have taken on their smartphones. Some of the students have run into a problem where photos that they have taken in portrait mode rotate into landscape mode when they add them to their story map. Any ideas on why this might happen and if there is a fix? Thanks in advance, Allen Risley GIS Specialist Cal State University San Marcos

I have a student who is using ArcGIS Online to create a map for an assignment in my class, but is unable to share the map to "Everyone" or to our org. She has saved the map to her My Content area from inside the map viewer and then clicks on the Share button. This is what she sees: The Share dialog box does not give her an option to choose with whom to share. Any ideas? I am teaching a course where I am using ArcGIS Online and Community Analyst Online to introduce students to GIS applications across a range of disciplines. I have an assignment I am trying to trouble-shoot that is based on this great article on Esri Insider: What Do Americans Do on the Fourth of July Weekend? In the article, Praveen Srivastava uses Community Analyst to find high prevalence counties for three groups: Outdoorsy People, Power Grillers and Shopaholics. I led my class through the exercise of mirroring the article and finding similar groups of counties using the Smart Map Search tool. No problem. We all then shared our three groups of counties to our ArcGIS Online accounts in order to make a map containing all three groups. Once again, no problem. In order to create the map with all three layers we had to open each of the maps shared from Community Analyst and save the data layers, the create a new map and add the three layers. No problem. Now for the problem. And if you're interested in playing along, here's a link to the ArcGIS Online map that I am using: 4th of July. The map and all of the data layers included in it have been shared to "Everyone". The next step was to use Derive New Locations to create a new layer that would only include counties that met the original Smart Map Search criteria for all three layers (Each layer has a field named "matchField" that contains the data value "match" when a county meets the respective criteria). As I was creating the assignment, I ran Derive New Locations and created a layer that has 99 records (counties), which sounds and looks reasonable. That layer is named "Shopaholics, Power Grillers and Outdoorsy People". I believe the Dereive New Locations query I ran is as follows (you can see a screenshot of most of the query in the attached pdf file): Shopaholics completely within Power Grillers, and Shopaholics completely within Outdoorsy People, and Shopaholics where matchField is "match", and Power Grillers where matchField is "match", and Outdoorsy People where matchField is "match". When the class and I worked through these steps during class it did not turn out as I had intended. The layers that result from the query have thousands of records, rather than the 99 or so that I expected. There are what look like duplicates of many of the records (lots of them). I don't know whether I recorded the query wrong or the query is (for some unknown reason) now not working properly. And if I did record it wrong, what was the query that created the layer with 99 records - which is exactly what I wanted? If you check out the map and the assignment you will see that I then intend for the students to append Tapestry data to the selected counties, create a Tabbed Map Series web app from their map and then include text that describes the layers/tabs. (There are also some reflection questions listed on our LMI, to round out the assignment). I could really use some help with this. Kate - thanks for asking this question! Lee - what is the status of the crowdsource solution? I have a Fine Arts faculty member at my university who is very excited about being able to create a web map or app that allows user input of photos or video. This may be her solution. Thanks, Allen Risley GIS Specialist Cal State University San Marcos
