Hi Kaitlyn, Your default answers need to reference the choice list values (in the name column), not the label. Most of the values in your choice lists are numbers but you're trying to reference them in the default column by their label. Eg for your signLocationByMotorist choicelist, you need to enter a default value of 1 (not 'Right'). It's just a coincidence that your minimal appearance is on the one default that correctly uses the value instead of the label ('ImageSoftware'). Hope this helps, Brett

Ok, thanks Chris - that's interesting. Unfortunately I don't have access to another Samsung Galaxy Note 4 to verify it's a model specific issue. Can you please try one of your failing surveys (all of your surveys are causing the crash aren't they?) on another mobile device? It doesn't matter what model / OS etc, we're just trying to rule out the issue being model related. Thanks, Brett

Hi Kaitlyn, Your pulldata() expression is trying to match the 'signnumber' from your .csv (eg D1-1, D1-1a, D1-2 etc) with your ${signtype} field. This field in your survey uses D1-1... etc as the label but 1, 2, 3, 4 etc is the value (name) being stored → so it's not matching up. To fix this you simply need to change the name column in your 'signtype' choice list to match the label column: Alternatively, you could update the 'signnumber' column in your .csv to the original numbers used in the name column of your choice list (1, 2, 3, 4 etc): Regards, Brett

Hi Chris, Thanks for supplying the log files. There isn’t anything obvious in them would explain your device crashing after about a minute. This is beginning to sound like a device issue, although this usually is caused by memory limitations when using very large external select lists etc (not the case here). Can you replicate this crash on any other Samsung Galaxy Note 4 devices or is it one specific device? I can’t replicate on any of the devices I’ve tested with your survey (Samsung Tab A6 – Android 5.1, Samsung S7 – Android 8.0 and iPhone 8 – iOS 11.4). Do you have other types of mobile devices to test with? Brett

Hi Dan, No, Survey123 geopoint questions don’t require a basemap at all in order to capture a position. When your device is offiline and no basemap is loaded onto the device, you should see the message “Offline map preview not available”, but also your location coordinates with an estimate of the horizontal accuracy. Collector and Survey123 don’t compete for the position information, and I have successfully followed your workflow on an iPhone 8 using integrated GPS and also an EOS Arrow Gold receiver. Do you get the same issue when you launch the directly from Survey123, rather than from within Collector? Also, try tapping on the satellite icon to confirm that the app has a valid location. If you’d like to send me your xls form I can help troubleshoot further. Brett

Hi Chris, It sounds like you are sending service error reports through the app (although I can’t see anything from your email address). These aren’t detailed enough to troubleshoot here. It would be helpful if you can send us through a log file for when the app crashes. You can create the log file by going to Survey123 Settings → Diagnostics and then turning on Logging. Take note of the log output location and file name so you can copy the log file from your Android device later. Now open one of the surveys you know to fail (are they all causing the app to crash now?). Please send through a log file that was logging when the app crashed. Thanks, Brett

Hi Wilma, I think this is caused by Connect being case sensitive to thumbnail image file extensions. Please rename an image that is currently failing to lowercase (.jpg or .png) and retry. Note that Connect currently requires all lowercase file extension, ie .Png will also fail. Please let me know how you go. Thanks, Brett

Hi James, Sure can! You can use the area() function in a calculation field for another question. This example shows the area (in square metres) and perimeter (in metres) of a polygon being converted to hectares and kilometres and rounded to 2 decimal places. Brett

Hi Chris, Ok, so you're successfully opening the Survey and pre-populating some fields from Collector but then it crashes after about a minute? Does this happen with all surveys, or just one in particular? Does a problematic survey crash when you open it directly in Survey123 (without using the link from Collector)? Are you able to send through any log files from the crash? This crash after a minute is concerning and we're keen to reproduce the behaviour and troubleshoot further. Brett

Hi Chris, I’ve been able to use your XLSForm to publish my own version of your survey and open it from within Collector (once I’ve changed the itemID to match my published survey). It looks like the code you’re using in Collector is correct (ie the itemID matches that of the survey .iteminfo file you provided), but the URL parameters you’re trying to pass into the survey are incomplete. You’re not providing a value or {field} to populate your Name and Town fields. Try using: arcgis-survey123://?itemID=8939a1a1a90843f498f67942385b9d52&field:Name={Name}&field:Town={Town} Brett

Hi Dion, Apologies, I assumed you were using an AGOL hosted feature service. That’s right, ArcGIS Server needs to support keywords to link attachments to your report, it seems strange that the default template works at all. What version of ArcGIS Server / Portal are you using? I’d like to try to reproduce this in an identical environment. Can you send me your xlsx form and sample/modified templates? Thanks, Brett

Hi Jonathan, I have not been able to replicate this issue by creating a survey in Connect then filling in the form online. Is this how you’ve created your survey or have you designed and published it directly online? Currently, when designing a survey online, rules (to set when something is relevant) are only supported by Single Choice, Dropdown, Likert and Rating questions – not Multiple Choice. It appears from your screenshot that you’ve added ‘Other’ manually into your multi-choice list. Note that this can also be achieved using the question type: select_multiple list_name or other in Survey123 Connect. Perhaps you can share your xlsx form or at least the expression you’re using in the 'relevant' column. Given this is a multiple choice question, I assume you need to have the note visible if ‘other’ is selected, regardless of what other options are chosen? In this case you would use an expression like contains(${power_tools}, 'other') in the 'relevant' column. Hope this helps, Brett

Hi Forest, The choice filter helps narrow down a list of secondary options based on the selection from a primary list. As such, it does not allow for displaying the entire secondary list without making that first selection. This is by design. A possible workaround would be to have two select_one questions for water body but only display one of these questions depending on whether a county has been selected or not. This is controlled using an expression in the Relevant column of your survey (eg string-length(${county})>0). The answer to either of your select_one questions should then be stored in a single field by using an IF statement on the Calculation column. Please note there is a known issue with Relevant expressions in v3.3 that may prevent this workaround from executing successfully. This will be addressed in v3.4. Regards, Brett

By design, Survey123 is configured to utilise your device's location when the app is open (background or foreground) to ensure the location is captured as quickly and accurately as possible. This is the same approach as other ESRI apps like Collector and Navigator. Extensive testing was carried out across a multitude of mobile devices, operating systems, internal location sensors and external Bluetooth GNSS receivers, to monitor battery consumption and performance. This testing included changing Survey123 settings to use the location as needed, when the survey is open and when the app is open. We found that other factors such as device usage, screen time and brightness had a much greater impact on battery consumption. Can you please provide us some details of your experiences to help us gather more information? For example: What specific devices and operating system versions are you running? Do your surveys take seconds / minutes / hours to complete? What sort of battery consumption are you seeing over what time period. How does Survey123 battery consumption compare to other mapping apps that always using your location (eg Collector, Google Maps etc.)? Are you running other apps and services while using Survey123? Are you operating in areas with wifi and/or mobile data coverage or in remote offline environments? Thanks, Brett
