Peter and Owen - thanks for this post and response. We experienced several incidents of this this semester. When someone asks about the problem, we can address it, but it's those who don't ask and just get frustrated. Part of the issue is that we encourage students to write their content in a Google Doc either for collaboration with other students or to turn in to the instructor for editing (instructors like Google Docs better than a StoryMap because it's easier to make comments/edits.)

Hi Eve - Thank you for hosting the session. I've been working with a team at my University to use maps and map projects as a way to explore issues of equity and systemic racism. Students are highly engaged in this work and I am optimistic given their commitment to making change. Your article brings up many points that help frame the projects, and could be crucial in guiding the discussions and progress. I'm always looking for resources and better ways to do these projects and provide for students. My questions are abstract -- how do we support and encourage students to dig into these topics to first see where the problems are, but then absolutely go beyond that to make change? I look forward to the discussion. Thank you!

Hi Tom - I don't have examples, but am consulting with a course about Disability in Public History in the fall. I'm very intrigued with your examples and the potential here. Will you keep us posted? Shana

Thanks for posting this idea, Teresa! I heartily support something like this. Of course, I'd love to have Alt text required, but this would be the next best thing. Agreed that it would be a big help for local and state government orgs to get StroryMaps accepted as a platform. It would also be a good way to alert people who don't know about Alt Text to learn what it is. Thanks for considering this request!

Hi - This may or may not be what you are looking for -- I did talk briefly about grading StoryMaps. The University of Minnesota has some sample rubrics available for StoryMaps that focus more on content, less on cartography, since the classes are not about cartography. Please note that this site is being revamped, and more content is coming. Another panelist shared this document, Map Evaluation Guidelines, that is more about the map. I plan to incorporate this into the UMN StoryMaps site.

Hi Max - I work at a large university helping faculty use Story Maps as assignments. I totally agree with Owen's comment about not allowing a large group to edit one StoryMap. It's easy to write over other people and coordinating editing is very difficult. In a situation like yours, I would recommend creating a collaborative document, such as a Google doc, and creating a script or storyboard with sections. Then, other students can fill in the sections with their content and one person (probably you, sadly) will build the Story Map. Make sure the other students clearly lay out what images go where, preferably uploading the images to a Google Drive folder, etc. Other students can include what type of section they think works for their content (slideshow, tour, etc.) Good luck!

Owen - thank you so much for this info. I hadn't tested using this process for Groups, and it's very helpful for planning to know what's coming. We have had good success with using the new builder with student assignments, and this group edit process will allow us to use it with more classes. Thanks!

I work at a university. We work with faculty who assign Story Map projects to students. We are looking for the ability to share Story Maps (viewing and editing) with a specific group, like a group of students or a class. The ability to share with one or two individuals would also work, although we've accomplished that in the past through groups. That does mean those of us who work with classes end up in hundreds of groups. Thanks!

Your point is well taken. I would love the functionality of alerts when alt text is missing - as they go, at publication, or even in a list of "errors." That would be fantastic! Thanks!

Owen - Thank you for not adding a link option to a header. For accessibility purposes, headings should never be links. (It's extremely annoying when using a screen reader.)

Hi - When we teach students to build StoryMaps, we require them to use Alt Text on any images or visual content. I'm very happy to see the Alt Text option for images and express maps. At some point, could you consider making the Alt Text field more visible (not hidden in the Settings) and required for visuals? Thanks!

I work at a University. We are starting to use the new StoryMaps builder with students in classes, depending on the goals of the assignment. Students are clearly figuring out the Express Maps with ease. However, we have been having two issues on a regular basis. The Express Maps seemingly randomly stop finding locations when a place is typed in the Search box. Today, several students were creating Express Maps and it was fine. Then, the Express Map stopped "finding" the location typed in the Search box. It would not zoom into the location, and you can't place the point. Sometimes it would resolve if they Placed the map, saved it. Other times, that didn't help and they'd start a new Express Map. We were at a loss as to how to resolve this. Several students have expressed wanting an "Undo" button. They lost content because they would hit a backspace.

I'm excited to see this option. One use case for this will be to combine student StoryMaps into one StoryMap. We can get quite a few StoryMaps (30+) from a class, so this will be helpful. Thoughts: Is there a way back to Edit from Present mode? Yes, I will use Present mode. I can see using this when teaching and presenting about StoryMaps. On the page that shows my collections, the Collection doesn't have an image. I wasn't sure how to add an image. I'd echo the desire to have a "home page" or opening page/space to describe the collection. When I share the Collection, I couldn't see how to get back to the Collection home page when viewing one of the StoryMaps? Is it intended to share in Present mode? I also agree it would be helpful to have an easy way to grab a link to share.
