Enable right-click open-in-new-tab for StoryMaps in Collection

There are times with a StoryMap collection when it would be helpful to open up several of the stories in the collection into their own tabs or windows. Ideally one would be able to do this quickly by right-clicking on the StoryMap in the Collection and selecting open in new tab or new window or private/incognito window. Currently right-clicking does not present those options.

For example, one might be showing some examples of stories from a collection, with a need to quickly jump back and forth between them by selecting their tabs, or to have two stories open side-by-side in different browser windows. In those cases you are looking for a quick way to open multiple stories from the collection in their own containers, rather than trying to use collection navigation to move between stories.

I'd also like to see some way to open a stand-alone version of a resource included in a collection. Perhaps this could be an option that one could enable for resources that are suitable for being shared individually outside of the collection interface.

This could be implemented either on the cover page or in the navigation view or both. Being able to enable something like the floating icon you see when interacting with an embedded link in a StoryMap would be great. That could be displayed either on the cover page card or the top of an individual StoryMap in the navigation view.

Along with that, the ability to right-click an item in the navigation bar to open it in its own tab would be very handy.

Status changed to: In Product Plan

@PeterKnoop @Heidi_Kristenson -- I hadn't gotten around to updating this idea yet, but this was recently implemented. Please see this article for more information.

StoryMap Collection "modes" - Esri Community

Since these new modes are available only via URL parameters at this time, I will only mark the idea as "In product plan." I'll leave the idea open and view it as a request to add the ability to enable these modes in the collection builder.

@OwenGeo Thanks for the information. I'd looked at that post, and while there is some merit to the NoNav mode for my use case, I actually do like having the navigation bar. I might be misunderstanding the modes, but I would like to keep both the cover page and navigation functionality in my collection.

I just want to give users the option to open one of the collection items listed in the navigation bar in its stand-alone form in a new tab, not to lose the navigation functionality altogether. If a user could right-click on one of those navigation items (like one of the three StoryMaps linked in the example collection below) and open the source url in a new tab, that would be great.

Having the floating icon to open a resource in its own tab (like what is available for some embedded apps and webmaps in StoryMaps) displayed in the top corner of the StoryMap would be gravy.

It could also be handy to have that option on the cover page, so that if a user is already familiar with the content and just wants to open one of the listed resources on its own, that option would be available.

Something like this:

Or just the ability to right click one of the items and open it in a new tab.

Thanks!

@Heidi_Kristenson In case you weren't aware, there is already an option in the ... menu to open the current item in a new tab. But I understand that might not be very apparent to everyone.

For technical reasons, I'm not sure we'll be able to enable right-clicking on items to open them in a new tab AND the internal navigation behavior of a collection (but we can continue to look into it). Having an icon to open in a new tab on each item could be feasible, but that seems like it could be a significant visual impact to the collection appearance, at least for grid layout. We could consider it for the layouts that have larger cards.

We'll continue to monitor this idea thread for additional votes and comments.

Oh, wow, thanks @OwenGeo! I hadn't thought to look there!

I'll mention that functionality on my cover page when introducing the collection.
