I am almost certain that the imported sketchup model will not support exaggeration. (Unless perhaps you used simple models for 3D symbols) You might have to exaggerate the DEM itsef; multiply the data by the exaggeration factor then visualize in ArcScene without setting the vertical exxageration. In SketchUp you might have to re-created the model and multiply all height measurements by the same exaggeration factor.

Hey, I have created a multipatch feature class and used Multipatch to Collada tool to export it to DAE file. But I got a warning (001099) saying "Unable to write ID_3Doutput_1.dae due to XML failure and an error message 999999 saying "Error executing function". Any idea? Thanks. Learner Is your multipatch closed and relatively simple?

You can't do this in ArcGIS. Well you can if you have a solid understanding of programming with ArcObjects and a hole lot of time on your hands. The few addins and plugins that people have developed are mostly for straight-down holes. What you need is a drillhole managment software. Geosoft make an ArcGIS plugin called Target for ArcGIS. Personally i prefer the full version of the software but the plugin works too. The geological software/drillhole management is designed to import downhole data in various formats (XYZ, Azimuth-Dip-Distance, etc.) Surveys (the drillhole survey data) is required to create tracers or 3D lines. (this is the XYZ or Azimuth-Dip-Distance data, usually associated with a hole-id) Next you need the attribute data (Geology, Lithology, Assays, borehole logs etc.) This data usually contains the Hole-ID, the attribute itself and FROM and TO information. After import the software associates the downhole tracer information with the FROM-TO attributes. Typically this kind of software allows you to analyze the subsurface data in 3D and may allow you to create various solid objects, geology, lithology and meshes from the drill data. You can also symbolize the downloholes using the various attributes and create geologic cross sections at whatever location you want. This is an area where ArcGIS is lacking greatly despite the fact that all the building blocks exist (ArcObjects). Geosoft is an ESRI partner (I think) so you can see what is possible with the Target addin. Unfortunately, most of this type of software is quite expensive. Even the Target for ArcGIS addin is pricey. The standalone Target by geosoft (very compatible with ESRI data type even MXD) goes for $6,500 CAD. More complex software such as GEMS or the very excellent Leapfrog Hydro and Leapfrog Mining are extremely expensive.

Once you have created the multipatch and you need to add more detail you can export to Collada then import to Google SketchUp (free 3D modelling software). Once you have added some realistic features and textures you can use the ArcScene editor to replace the model which will swap the edited model with your existing multipatch.

Hi all, I would like to know if it is at all possible to export an ArcScene scene to a 2D platform (such as jpg, emf or png) without using the normal FILE >> EXPORT SCENE >> 2D... I there a geoprocessing tool which can do this? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Not a geoprocessing tool but you can most certainly do this programtically with ArcObjects.

where to download for free dem data for creating countour in 3d analys @thales007 has already provided an answer but you might want to tell us more specifics about your geographic location of interest. USGS dem at 90m resolution is available for the entire globe but 30m resolution is only available for the the US. Different countries, states and municipalities may offer dem frre of charge (In my province of Ontario, Canada 10 and 20m resolution dem is available free of charge, in Prince Edward Island, Canada LiDAR coverage of the entire province is available, but other provinces do not offer high resolution dem free-of-charge). I think your question is beyond the scope of these (ESRI) forums. You might have better luck at the GIS Stack Exchange forums or other more generic GIS discussion forums.

Thanks.... I know it is possible. Look at this photo of a scouting map.....the picture is of the lower portion of the map. So you cant see it, but you can see the inserted 3d viewer. How can I display 3d data in a PDF. This is NOT a map created with ArcScene. As far as I know you cannot export ArcGlobe / ArcScene to 3D PDF. Judging by the 3D navigation arrow in the left bottom corner it is most likely a 3D AutoCAD/ Microstation 3D map.

I would like to do this but using Python script, can anyone point me in the right direction? I've just started learning Python having a trouble figuring out how to do this. Cheers The function I wrote requires ArcObjects and works with VBA, Vb .Net. Python scripting is geared towards geoprocessing. I am quite certain this cannot be done with Python.

It could have something to do with the invalid intersections. You mention some plugins which can assist me, can you name some of them? Also, remove all stray lines from your model; every object has to have a volume - if you need a supporting pillar it cannot be a single line but a cylinder that encloses a volume. Hm, its been a while but some of the plugins i used was "Stray Lines" and "Make Faces" i am sure there are some for removing duplicate lines and validations; just search the Google SketchUp support.

Does anybody know what this is, and how to fix it? @RiX012 - ArcGIS does not support complex SketchUp geometries. I can see a number of invalid intersections in your SketchUp model. Validate all and make sure all line segments are properly connected and all faces are closed. There are some plugins that can assist with that. Once your model has been corrected you can try again. As for the incorrect projection; The SketchUp workflow in the current version of ArcGIS is meant to allow you to add detail to existing models. Nothing more nothing less - enything beyond this functionality is experimentation on behalf of the user and may or may not work. Hence, if you start by extruding the footprints of your buildings in ArcGIS and then convert those to closed multipatch features then export to collada and modify in SketchUp and lastly replace model is really the only guaranteed way that the model will be correctly replaced. You can import existing SketchUp models without first creating then in ArcGIS but you will have to scale and position the 3D Objects manually. And of course it might not work because it's not the recommended workflow. I've had the most success with generating closed multipatches in ArcGIS first. These HAVE TO be closed multipatches otherwise you are running the risk that once you replace your model in the last step it will not work. I had this last step fail more often then not with complex sketchup models.

Even if your company forks out the cash for the Editor license, annotations will only update one way --> attribute data change will update the annotation. This only works well when the newly updated value is more less the same length (characters). Say you use Maplex and you made fancy labels from a complex expression using tags and multiple lines then you export this as a feature linked annotation. Does not work as well as you might think. Instead of having your company fork out all sorts of cash on the Editor license have them buy you the Maplex extension and label features dynamically. Maplex gives you a lot more control over the dynamic labels. Better yet, rumour has it that the upcomming new version of ArcGIS will include Maplex in the Basic license (formerly ArcView). There are ways to do what you want programatically but it would be fairly complex when you get to slitting and merging features. J

Substitute the path in Windows. If you have 100s of documents and many layers you can spend days and weeks updating data sources which is fine until someone changes the physical location of the data again. What is the original path and where are the drawings located now? Can't you map the network drive in such a way that it appears as if all the drawings are still in the same location? If the drawings are still in the same folder structure as before then it is just a matter of substituting the drive. See SUBST. Simple command and everything will work just as before. If you for some reason you do not want to keep the SUBSTituted path then move all the Map Documents to the server location where the drawing files are stored. BEFORE YOU DO THAT and still while you have a substituted path: Open each map document --> File --> Map Document Properties --> check Store relative pathnames to data sources. This way when your folder structures that contains the drawings moves anywhere, the document will always point to the relative path name. Once you open and change this for each map document you can remove the SUBSTituted path. hope this helps.

TIN creation does not always work. There a few workarounds which seem to help. How long is your path to the target TIN? I have tested this on the same computer and if the path to the TIN workspace was very long, the process consistently failed. When I moved the entire workspace a few directories closer to root the same process was successful. Often I am unable to create TIN with similar errors you describe. When I restart the computer and run the same process from a new map document (I almost always run these from inside an MXD) the same process succeeds. I reported a similar problem (every step documented + screen captures) to ESRI and send them the data and they were successfully generating and editing the TIN from the same data I sent them on their end. I then tried creating a new document and placed the data/workspace in a different location on the harddrive and was able to successfully create and edit the TIN. While I was still encountering issues with creating and editing TINs the ESRI support team provided me with a fairly harsh solution: 1. Close ArcMap and ArcCatalog 2. Go to C : Users \ (profile) \ AppData \ Roaming 3. Rename the ESRI folder to OldESRI 4. Run the tools again to see if the results are correct this time I was not able to try this solution because i have a lot of customization, add-ons, custom toolboxes, symbology, etc. and was afraid that rebuilding everything could impact some of my critical project. Also try creating your TINs without clipping it. once you have the TINs you whish to extrude, use the clipping polygon as the input polygon into the extrude tool. If you need to show your TINs clipped in your model, clip them with Edit TIN after you have created it. Hope this helps.
