I would use TIN not a Terrain dataset. Create 2 TINS - 1 in full resolution, 2nd generalized. Convert both to nodes. Delete all nodes from the 2nd "generalized" layer where you need high resolution data. Select nodes by location from 1st "high resolution" copy and paste into the 2nd "generalized" layer You will now have a layer containing low resolution nodes and high resolution nodes in some areas. Create a new TIN from this layer. If you need to add a high resolution edge to this dataset i would create a 3D outline using the high res TIN then add this to the final "Combined" TIN as a breakline.

I never tried the folowing script but it might be what you need: http://arcscripts.esri.com/details.asp?dbid=15173 Also, have you tried modeling the buildings into a TIN surface then converting the TIN to Raster and running viewshed? Building can be put into a TIN surface but i believe that the walls need to be very slightly slanted. Create the footprint and give them an elevation then create the top outlines (i tried buffer -0.1m) and give elevation value. Convert TIN to nodes, remove all nodes that intersect footprints. Then create the tin again using the nodes and the footprint and top of building outlines. After this you might need to add just the footprint breaklines to the TIN to correct any triangulation anomaly. Finally conver TIN to raster and run viewshed analysis. I have not tried this with viewsheds nor have i tried converting such TIN results into a raster but i frequently model man-made structures into surface TIN models using similar techniques then use the resulting surfaces for various analysis.

Dear friends i am using Arcgis 9.2 version. i want to show a geological cross section in ARCSCENE 3D mode. i have georeferenced satellite image with me. i want to show a subsurface section in such a way that the geological cross section hang out from the georeferenced surface satellite image. Can anybody help me in this regard You will probably need surface data to drape the image on to show the surface terrain characterics as well as the image. What do your subsurface data look like? You might need clip each subsurface geological layer (multipatch) with the shape that outlines where you want to show your section. This can probably be done with the input TIN's prior to creating the multipatch layers.

Do the lines share some common IDs so they can be identified as the line features being buffered? Assuming that is true, make a feature selection based on the line's IDs. Then using an insert cursor construct a polygon feature around the line and ensure that the radius in increased 50 meters. One way to get the points is to use the Trig for Right Handed Triangles Rules (SOCATOA) you can then get the points around the line. See : http://id.mind.net/~zona/mmts/trigonometryRealms/introduction/rightTriangle/trigRightTriangle.html if you forget how to do that. Can you please elaborate? How do you construct a polygon that is squared at the input line end? Can you provide the code?

Hi, I'm currently undertaking some analysis in ArcView that requires the use of 50m buffers along a line. However, the line itself is broken into sections and I need to create flat buffer at the end of each section (as opposed to the standard round buffers that are used within the ArcView licence) to avoid double counting within the overlapping circular ends. Given I dont have an ArcInfo Licence, is there an easy alternative approach I could use to get the same resulting buffer? An obvious step would be to create individual rectangular polygons for each section, but given that the line lengths of each sections are likely to change over the course of the project as the design is refined, I was hopeful of finding a way to do this whereby I could easily re run the the process if if changes were made. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated. I've attached a simple diagram of the issue I have to explain it better. The red line indicates the ideabuffer break as opposed to the circular ends which obviously create overlaps. Thanks very much in advance..... Andy Have you found a solution?

Have a look at the 'create station lines' tool in ET Geowizards. If you can create station lines at the end of each of your lines, you could use them to split a single buffer into square ended pieces. I can't find this tool in ET Geowizards...

Is there a way to use Google's Imagery in your ArcGIS map? I know you can use their street layers and such...I am looking for a way to do this either through GIS Servers probably by adding a WMS Server or a WCS Server? I think. So if thats the case I think I just need the correct URL to plug in...again I think...:) Thats why I'm asking. Tanks in Advance! You can purchase the imagery direct from DigitalGlobe. Minimum order is about 25km2 which can be obtained for about 375USD. (Natural color Quickbird) 4-band near infra red is sligltly more expensive.

Thanks Nathan, Sounds straight forward... Will have to try once version 10 is out. What i mean by smoothing. I often work with TIN but do not care for the triangulated-like appearance. As an example, SketchUp uses Smooth Surface function for TIN and multi-face surfaces (Right click on Sanbox (TIN) select smooth) which provides the user with a dialog box and a slider that allows to adjust the smoothing factor. This way a really blocky and triangulated surface can be rendered smooth. Very nice feature. I was hoping for something similar to be added to 3D Analyst. Even in version 10, only SKP 6 files are supported?

Can TIN be exported to COLLADA in ArcGIS 10? Can ArcGIS 10 3D Analyst extension smooth TIN surfaces? Does anyone really use 3D Analyst to create 3D buildings other then extruding footprints? Initially, i thought there would be some groundbreaking improvements in the new 3D Analyst in terms of 3D editing and additional support for other 3D formats. Most importantly, i was hoping that to be able to export features to SketchUp, edit the model and be able to import it back while preserving the coordinate system information without having to manually place the model. I use 9.3 and the SketchUp plugin (which works flawlessly) and if need be i can import SKP models into ArcScene, although they need to be georeferenced. I can't see how the new version of ArcGIS would improve my existing work flow. In fact i now fear i will not be able to export TIN surfaces into sketchup.

This should work. Is ArcGIS installed in the default directory? What bout the workspace default path? C:\Workspace? Any spaces in the path name might cause a problem. (Provided you are using the mentioned function from the Spatial Analyst menu) Does this also happen when you use the toolbox functions/command line? What's your Operating Systems? If W7 then i am not sure if 9.2 is supported.... Good luck

The reason i am asking is that i have had problems with SketchUp models version 7 and greater but no problems with the version 6 or lesser. Not sure what the input model was created with but there might a compatibility issue. (As for Sketchup version 6 is supported but newer versions are not)

Which application did you use to create the .3ds model? As for 64bit version, i believe that officially it is supported (will run) although ArcGIS gains no advantage as will only run at 32 bit, utilize a maximum of 2GB RAM and only one core if multi-core processor is used.
