How can I programatically obtain the corner coordinates (in page units) or the envelope of the data frame in layout view? I don't seem to be able to do this with iActiveView:Extent as it is returning the extent of the data view in page units. The below screen capture shows what I would like to get. The coordinates are roughly; upper left 0.9,10 and lower right 8, 0.9. Even in page layout iActive:extent returns: upper left -3.4, 12 and lower right 14,-3 which is the extent of the entire application window not the data frame as it appears in layout. Hi Thanks for the add-on provides access but there was a small problem because I can not use this add-on due to error: --------------------------- LineBuffer_FlatEnds --------------------------- Unable to set current layer EDITOR. Make sure the target layer is selected teplate! --------------------------- OK --------------------------- Can I ask you some brief instructions for using this tool? Hi @pollacko, I added instructions: http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=54ad502f798c4cc780a1132ad44670a9 Most tools I made (especially those that are stand-alone like this one) follow the same basic principles: must be editing, the source features that are being processed must be selected and the layer in which the features are contained must be selected in the TOC. You must also select the the destination layer template by clicking it in the "Create Features" window. (This is what was referred to as the target layer in legacy ArcGIS versions.) These actions "tell" the Add-In where the features you want to buffer are and where they need to be stored. I tested the tool when writing the instructions and all worked well. (ArcGIS 10, SP4) not supported in any other version.

ArcGIS is not a good tool for the creation of geologic cross sections. A little more functionality will be added to the existing profile line tool in version 10.1 but you cannot create simple geologic cross-sections that are projected on a layout grid and have a defined azimuth, dip and plunge. You can convert everything into points and X,Y,Z coordinates and then project these coordinates (using the add XY points tool) in such a way that you assign X = X and Z = Y or similar but you can only do that with points and only simulate an straight 0 plunge North-South or East -West cross section. I've gone as far as converting TINS to points to get a sectional view of 3D features and digitizing lines snapping to points in this "simulated" orientation but in the end you really need to look at geology software.

I run into this over and over and have tried various ways of fixing this issue but perhaps I am missing something. I am unable to export a smooth fluid video animation from ArcScene. When I hit the play button all is good and the animation plays relatively well in ArcScene itself but when I export it to AVI (Uncompressed) the result is very jerky. I only have 2 keyframes, and the video is 20s long. (Through trial and error I've figured out a long ago that introducing more then 2 keyframes and making the clip longer then 20s creates huge problems) In the past i've recorded clips 20 - 30 s long and the motion in ArcScene purposely very slow then in post processing (video editing application) i've spead up the clips 4x. However this time it's quite jerky and I will not be able to make it appear fluid with any trickery. What on earth is going on? I've seen countless animations on the web and all suffer from this problem. I am uploading my 2GB clip to YouTube right now and will post a link when complete. Well, for some reason YouTube removed all the colour from the video (the imagery is in reality very green and saturated) and also introduced a strange artifact on the left but still you can see the jerking: http://www.youtube.com/my_videos_upload?feature=vm-menu Machine Specs: Asus P6X58D Premium Motherboard Intel Core i7-980X Extreme Edition 3.33Ghz CPU OCZ DDR3 PC3-6GB RAM (12GB total) WD VelociRaptor 450 GB, SATA 6 Gb/s, 32 MB Cache, 10,000 RPM Hard Drive NVIDIA Quadro 4000 w/2.0GB, Dual Link DVI Video Card Windows 7 Professional 64bit

Hello! I need some help with my project. My english isn't perfect, so I apologize in the begining for any mistakes:) I need to creat some solar shading analyses and I'm using AG 10 with all extensions. Data that I collected are: 3D buildings layer (3D layer) witch I convert to multipatch, contour of the terrain, boundary of the terrain, polygon trees layer with height. I create DEM from contour, it's resolution is 0,5 m. I was trying to use http://arcscripts.esri.com/details.asp?dbid=15173 by it doesn't working on AG 10 😞 Do You have any idea how I can 'add' buildings to DEM and get DSM. I need to add, that roofs of the buildings are precise (attachment). Do You have any suggestions what I can do? I would be very gratefull! This cannot be done in ArcGIS. (adding 3D buildings to DEM). Some features like dykes and dams can be modeled into a TIN surface then exported to DEM but TIN is a 2.5D surface not a 3D object (such as mesh or solid) so a 3D building with vertical walls cannot be added to TIN. Multipatch is a 3D feature and it is possible to merge and intersect closed multipatches but a 2.5D surface topography is not closed and cannot be therefore merged with other multipatch features. (Closed multipatch has to fully enclose a volume)

There is a tool in 10.1 called the Stack Profile tool. This tool will create the desired effect. Would be nice feature to be able to save this graph as a georeferenced cross section and add 3D grid and symbology and labels in layout.

I've created flyovers in both ArcGlobe and ArcScene then combining them together. It is important to realize that neither ArcGlobe nor ArcScene will yield a professional level quality video. (Not suitable for TV, Film documentary, etc.) Those are typically built in 3D animation rendering software by animation and CG professionals. Because this software allows you to import USGS DEM it can also be used to build realistic environments. (Take a look at VUE) However, the output from ArcGIS is suitable for display at conferences and as learning material or as informational videos on company websites. Purchase a video editing software. IMovie (MAC) or a similar. You could use the free Windows Movie Maker but it is really basic. iMovie is by far the best option and there is really no Windows equivalent. Personally, if I end up doing a lot of this I will get a Mac solely for the purposes of creating flyby videos. Right now i use CyberLink for Windows but it is just OK as there is really nothing for windows that comes close to iMovie. If you are skilled with Adobe Products you could use Adobe Premiere Pro with Adobe After Effects but again those are professional tools and even with my knowledge of Photoshop and Illustrator I find there is a steep learning curve requiring at least a full training course and some experience. For a quick and dirty flyover that will still drop the jaw of your colleges iMovie, Movie Maker or the likes of CyberLinkPower Director is sufficient and it only takes a few hours to figure out. When you export your first video from ArcScene or ArcGLobe you will notice: It does not play at all (file too large, too long) It is very jerky (too much data in scene, complex path, not enough frames) To remedy this: Keep your clips very short. (30s or shorter) Use keyframes and for best transition only use 2 keyframes per clip (your last keyframe becomes the starting point for your next clip) Record video 4x to 8x slower then speed up clip in Movie editor Keep layers to bare minimum and most importantly: Read the entire section on Animation in the Resource Centre. (All of the material is an equivalent of a small manual) Combine your video with other clips from other applications such as Google SketchUp. I also add Leapfrog Mining animations for subsurface but ArcScene does that pretty well too. When you get better at making the flyovers you will notice that some features are seriously lacking such as the option to add sky with clouds, cast realistic shadows, etc. It seems like a small thing but when flying and spinning around it is nice to have a sky dome that moves and responds in a corresponding fashion. In ArcGIS you only have the option of a solid colour, ArcGlobe allows environmental haze but it adds problems when rendering and still does not appear as natural as a sky would. Hi I know that this is possible by using some third party tools like Traget but I really need to do this in ArcMap. What I have are is: DrillHole_ID,Easting,Northing,Azimuth,Dip,Srart,End,Lenght The question is whether your downhole tracers follow a straight line. If so you can construct your straight lines programmatically with ArcObjects or you might be able to find a script. You cannot do this with default tools alone. If you have downhole surveys that do not follow a straight line (many dip, azimuth, distance readings per one collar (HOLE_ID)) then again you could do this programatically with ArcObjects but it would be far more complex then straight lines and as far as I know nobody has taken the time to write such sript yet. (other then Geosoft - but you mentioned Target is not an option). Strangely, all the pieces are there (ArcObjects) for someone to create drilhole management utility for ArcGIS and even to take it further to do what Target does but using all native components. Right now, ArcGIS 3D Analyst is not a drillhole management, a very poor 3D modelling software, unsuitable for subsurface 3D modelling and analysis, it does not allow you to create 3D solids or models and dees not offer any 3D interpolation (biharmonic, voxel griding) to make 3D solids from assay data in 3D space, and ArcGIS is also unsuitable for producing geologic cross sections. It is great for 2.5D surface analysis and it can visualize pretty much any 3D data you can import but as for mining and subsurface geological modelling I would advise to look elsewhere. So in summary: it is not possible to do what you want with default tools in ArcGIS. it may be possible to try someone's custom script / addin but you are at a mercy of the programmer and the results may or may not be accurate I am not aware of any script add in that will convert a downhole survey of more that 2 points to a downhole 3D polylines (tracers) such as the shown on the image below You can visualize (but not create) 3D data from various sources as shown on the image below

have anyone got google sketch up pro? The replace model should work fine so long you have fulfilled the conditions outlined by @Tarun_Jaiswal. There might a problem with your SketchUp model. Perhaps it is too complex? As for SketchUp Pro, there is no difference between SketchUp Pro and Standard free version in the ESRI-SketchUp workflow. I recommend you try the recommended workflow whereby you starting point of ArcGIS data, building footprints for example. Extrude a simple footprint - convert to "CLOSED" multipatch - export to Collada - import to SketchUp - make simple 3D modifications making sure to close all faces - save skp model - back in ArcScene replace model It is essential you close all faces in SketchUp and keep the model simple. There are a number of SketchUp plugins that are used for model validation. Once all faces have bee closed and the model is valid you should have no problems. I also had some success using fairly complex sketchup modes as 3D symbols then scaling and rotating them as needed but I would only recomened this technique is you are placing random 3D object into your scene.

My next step is to import my model into ArcGIS. But I need to verify/review my model in GoogleEarth before I start the importing. Sending back a model to GoogleEarth for quality control is a part of the whole process and I am sure some people experienced the same issue as I mentioned in my first post. Any help is appreciated. You are aware that you will loose all georeferencing information once you import into ArcScene? (Unless your starting point was a multipatch feature which you have exported, modified in SketchUp, and want to replace with the updated model) The technique you described should have worked for exporting to Google Earth. How complex is your model?

This is an ESRI ArcGIS forum more specifically 3D Analyst. Try posting your question in the Google SketchUp forums or the GIS StackEchage. If you have any issues concerning the importing of SketchUp models into ArcGIS or exporting existing ArcGIS data into 3rd party such as Collada we might be able to help.
