The above will give you a thumbnail of 400px wide, not quite the 600x400px original size. I have found via experimentation that you can hack it by using w=1000. Don't ask me why this delivers a larger width image, but it does. I do all my thumbnails at 600x399 (Virgos will know this is the exact px) and save them as PNG for best results (crispest across all the sizes the thumbnail is used within the ecosystem). So to grab a thumbnail _nearly_ at original size, you can follow Bob's instructions above, or right-click on the the thumbnail and open it in a new tab, remove most everything after the ?, and just add/substitute w=1000 at the end. Here is an example from one of my items. https://www.arcgis.com/sharing/rest/content/items/539baade18054022865f6e279acf28b9/info/thumbnail/thumbnail1720729996362.png?w=1000 https://igcglg.maps.arcgis.com/sharing/rest/content/items/9caff1bacad145f3b312956e1e639e06/info/thumbnail/thumbnail1761452791083.png?w=1000 That gives you a 594x396px PNG. Close enough, but I think this is just a bit better result than using a 400px wide thumbnail. But yes, I agree, it would be nice to be able to get at the original thumbnail easier.

Welcome to the Public Account community. A public account is a great way to take advantage of ArcGIS Online free mapping capabilities, and includes access to public ArcGIS Living Atlas content. A good way to familiarize yourself with Map Viewer and what you can do is to take the tutorial: https://learn.arcgis.com/en/paths/try-arcgis-online/ A public account has limitations, most notably you cannot publish data, perform analysis, and sharing is only completely private (yourself only) or completely public. If that doesn't meet your needs you can always obtain a personal account, which includes those capabilities and ArcGIS Pro and other software for $100/yr subscription. https://www.esri.com/en-us/arcgis/products/arcgis-for-personal-use/buy If you are a non-profit organization, you can obtain software via the Esri non profit program: https://www.esri.com/en-us/industries/nonprofit/overview Or can apply for conservation grants via the Esri Conservation Grant Program (ECP): https://www.esri.com/en-us/industries/conservation/program-application I'm happy to help you sort out your options and direct you to the proper resources for learning and more.

There have been changes since this thread began. Layer pop-ups can not be configured in basemap layers. If you make a custom basemap using the Imagery layer from Living Atlas, the pop-ups will be displayed and cannot be configured otherwise. If your goal is to have an imagery basemap without the reference layers, then you can do one of the following: Toggle the reference layer in the Imagery Hybrid basemap off and save your map If implementing a custom basemap gallery, make a copy of the Imagery Hybrid basemap and remove the reference layer, then save it in your custom basemap gallery group. I typically implement a custom basemap gallery in my organizations. Since I do not always want an imagery basemap with a reference layer, I've done as described in the second bullet and have added a custom Imagery Only basemap. Note that not all layer types are supported in custom basemaps. See this help topic: https://doc.arcgis.com/en/arcgis-online/create-maps/choose-basemap-mv.htm#ESRI_SECTION1_4649069F30CB4C2B90B6D060637C6F8C

An excellent post that will help others unlock the potential of pop-ups. there's lots to learn from your storymap. Now if only users would think more about configuring pop-ups... <sigh>.

@mpboyle Apologies then, I have misunderstood. It seems the crux of your issue is that when publishing from ArcGIS Pro to ArcGIS Online, what you have in Pro is not what you get in the feature layers in ArcGIS Online. Is that correct?

My opinion Map Viewer is how you configure and control the pop-ups and the order of the items you see in them. If you don't bother to configure pop-ups at all, alphabetical ordering seems like a reasonable default to me. I'm thinking at a minimum, and especially if you authoring maps/apps for others to use in your organization or publicly, you are going to want to omit some fields and change the display name for other fields, or format numbers. While doing that, re-order as desired. Or better yet, take it to the next level and use text elements with text and fields to make a more readable, understandable, information display rather than just a list of attributes. Lots of additional info and examples here: https://www.esri.com/arcgis-blog/?s=#pop-ups&

This just updated blog article now lists 12 (formerly 10) ways to get the most out of ArcGIS Living Atlas. If you've not yet fully incorporated Living Atlas into your workflows, this is a good introduction to the different ways it can be used by you, or your organization. For more information, see Twelve ways to get the most out of ArcGIS Living Atlas, see the Living Atlas website, or view all Living Atlas blog articles.

Curious as to what that "issue I consistently have with ExB" is. Your feedback would be very beneficial. I also agree with you on (at least what I think) is your assertion that all Instant Apps should support a core set of capabilities. I'll take the liberty of extending your thoughts and feedback by adding "then add focused tools to the specific implementation target audience and goals of the Instant App template." Would save me some time if you can let me know which are the ones that you think are lacking in a common foundation. You can respond here, or privately to [email protected].

I've not dug into your comments deeply (been busy with the What's New in ArcGIS Online blog article) but wanted to mention a couple of current resources that might help you out. The first is the keyword search on the Instant Apps Gallery home page. Enter something you are looking for to find a match. Perhaps a better resource when you are looking for specific capabilities, especially when considering which template to use, is the PDF capabilities comparison document. Hope this helps...

You can transfer ownership of the story to yourself, or another member, before deleting the member. As administrator, you can do this through the admin console for members, or you can go to the item page, then look for Edit next to the owner name.

Early on in the New Year we're all likely still catching up with things that we put aside during the holidays. One of those things might have been a review of what's been added and improved in ArcGIS Online, a good review exercise to ensure you getting the most out of new features and capabilities. The recently published 2025 ArcGIS Online year in review covers all the updates during last year, and provides quick links to get details and a list of all blog articles covering each update. As you begin working this New Year, it's worth a look to see if you've overlooked something that might be useful in your workflows.

There was a glitch introduced in this workflow with the October 2025 update. A recent patch has corrected this, you can now go into any basemap layer with pop-ups and disable those.
