On the Arcpy.mapping.Layer class help, it explains that ArcMap layers have a dataType property that stores a layer's source 'Type' like Shapefile, or Geodatabase, or SDE, Raster, etc. I would like to see a full list of possible values for this dataType property but can't seem to find it in the help. Anyone know where it is? http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#/Layer_properties/000v0000002t000000/ For now, I mainly need to know how to specifically identify layers who sources are shapefile, personal geodatabase, file geodatabase, or SDE, since I'll need to handle each of these categories in different ways. Also need to identify if a standalone table in an MXD is dbf, personal geodatabase, file geodatabase, or SDE. Would be nice to be able to do this without having to create some complex string search on the layers datasource. Thanks for any help -Andrew

Thanks. I guess there isn't a special lock for when someone is editing versus just viewing a version. So if anyone is viewing data in a version, it can't be deleted. I also run a python script every night to reconcile all our editing versions with DEFAULT. Sometimes people leave their edit sessions open and the reconcile tool returns an error about the edit session being open. This prevents us from getting a good compress, so I need to figure out how to identify these sessions and kill them before I run my script.

If a specific version cannot be deleted because it has locks on it, Is there a way to identify the sde process that is causing the lock using PL/SQL to inspect the table_locks, object_locks, and process_information tables within SDE? I can't seem to find the right joins to tie a specific version to a lock. I often ask this question of our DB admin's and their response is usually to just to kill all the connections or restart SDE. I'd rather prevent kicking everyone off if I can. I think the sde demon tools have something like this, but I am not the server administrator and don't have access to the box.

Is defect ID 56441 planned to be fixed in 10sp2? It deals with checking the "Changed Features Only" box when running a check against a feature class on SDE using a two-tier connection. I noticed it in 9.3.1 and it sounded like it was going to be fixed in 10sp1 but it never was. This issue is really hindering us from using Data Reviewer to QC versions before they are posted to control, since we have so many checks and a rather large dataset to inspect. It also prevents us from using the new tools for integrating Data Reviewer into Workflow Manager which we are really excited about. Here's the Defect info: Defect ID: 56441 Name: Performance issue encountered on trying to run a batch job on changed features only. This only happens with direct connect

By next release he means 10.1 right? not 11? Thanks for the info. Hi there, You heard correctly. At this time, there is no GDBT release for ArcGIS 10. Please note that the GDBT has always been an unsupported developer sample. I suggest that you vote for this functionality on the ESRI Ideas.com site. It has already been posted (in several forms) as an enhancement request: 1. Give me a GUI for ArcSDE 2. SDE Dashboard 3. Merge GDBT, MXDPERFSTAT, GDBDesigner, GDBDiagrammer, GDBReporter into ONE extension FYI: one of Jack's ESRI UC preconference questions addressed the GDBT Q: Will the geodatabase toolset become part of core ArcGIS Desktop? Hope this helps,

Would like ability to reset a feature's attributes or geometry back to how it existed in the parent version. Would be just like the versioning toolbar conflict resolution window, except the edit doesnt have to be a conflict for me to want to set it back sometimes. Its all in the system. the version changes window already contains all the values needed to do a replacement, just need the extra functionality.

I'd like the ability to snap to an ArcGIS Server layer if its in my ArcMap session. Having the ArcGIS Server layer be vector would be fine. Not sure if this is available in 10. Now that ArcGIS Server layers are becoming more prevalent as a way to share information between agencies, the need to use that data more like full blown layers (as opposed to little view-only items in ArcMap) is increasing. I'd much rather just snap to a read-only layer I’m referencing from another SDE, instead of copy it locally all the time, just to have the ability to snap to it.

Seems very often I want to search the ArcGIS 10 Online Help for a particular ArcGIS Desktop tool, but most of the first returns are for ArcObjects SDK type help. For example, I wanted to look up more information about the Append geoprocessing tool. When i search for that term, I get lots of raster/imagery/mosaicing help and some ArcObjects Append help, if i could filter the results to the different help libraries available I think I'd get better hits. Thank you

I would like to be able to load data into a feature class or table that is the origin of a composite relationship class. I do not understand why this is a limitation in ArcGIS Desktop. Why am I required to verstion the data and use the Load Objects tool in ArcMap to load data into these objects? For us we several feature classes that have 1 table that is a destination for a 1:M composite relationship class. That table does not necessarily have to have a record for every feature in the origin feature class. So loading new records into the origin feature class wouldnt have any bearing on validity of the relationship to us.
