The dissolve tool may not be recognizing the joined field as a legitimate field to perform the task. Perform the join to csv and then create a new featureclass and then perform the dissolve on that new featureclass.

Charles: Please see this Esri Online Help for the Dissolve tool: http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#//00170000005n000000 If all your counties of interest have a common attribute in an attribute field, you can "dissolve" on the field/attribute and create a new featureclass.

I reported the bug for build 1500. It wasn't fixed in build 1700. Still not fixed in build 1750... Being able to get attribute information is so important to delivering a useful tool to others. Likewise, building an optimized map service, that is, one with scale dependencies for layers that should not be on at small scale is also important on the client-side and server-side.

Gordon: Thank you for the helpful directions. I converted the 100's of gigabytes of TIFs to jpeg2000 files to save storage space on the server (about 85% savings). I will test your process and also talk to IT about more server space. Thanks again for your thoughts and time. Joe

Gordon: Thank you for your comments regarding mosaic datasets and image services. I am trying my first mosaic dataset/image service in an Amazon EC2 instance and testing it against a cache service on the same server. Do you have any advice regarding ??optimizing? a mosaic dataset for use in an image service? Here is what I have done in ArcGIS 10.1 prerelease. Convert imagery from TIF to Jpeg2000 (UTM coord sys) Create file geodatabase Create Mosaic Dataset (Web Merc coord sys) Add Rasters to Mosaic Dataset (JP2 files) Define Overviews (location = FGDB) Build Overviews (1280x1280 rows; Sampling Factor = 2) Set ??Mask? and ??Stretch? Mosaic Functions Publish Mosaic Dataset to Image Service Am I missing anything important? Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Joe

Dear ArcGIS Explorer Desktop Team: I look forward to the next release of ArcGIS Explorer Desktop. Our staff are excited to use this application every day to view and query project geospatial data served from our ArcGIS Server. There are two items that I hope are included in the next build. Esri Support: November 1, 2010 ArcGIS Explorer 1500 pop-up content does not display for a layer with scale dependency set in a map service. http://support.esri.com/en/bugs/nimbus/TklNMDYyNDUx And ArcGIS Ideas: June 15, 2011 Edit Map Note Vertices (for lines and polygons) in AGX Desktop http://ideas.arcgis.com/ideaView?id=08730000000boETAAY Thanks for all your hard work on this great product. Sincerely, Joe

Frikan: Have you looked at the Add Surface Information (3D Analyst) tool?
"Slope for a line is calculated as a percent, or grade, by examining each of its segments. The min and max slope values are taken from the segment that is either closest to horizontal or most extreme. The average slope is determined by averaging the slope for all segments weighted by their 3D length. Longer segments will have more influence than shorter segments."
We have the same problem with builds 1700 and 1750 on Dell D520, D530 and D620 laptops. AGX worked fine with Vista and its associated graphics drivers, but get a map that does not work when the laptops were upgraded to 64-bit Windows 7. The AGX map will work if it is located on an extended monitor, but that does not help when you use the laptop stand-alone. Big bummer.
