As an update to my post I have now almost fully migrated to Pro. My projects are organized very similarly to how I had my mxds organized (generally by Department or function). I even went in and did some better organization when I switched to projects. The beauty of projects is that its just as Dan says below, you can do it however you desire. Being able to have multiple layouts actually simplified things greatly as well. Instead of having a separate mxd for each size of a particular map, I just have one project with a separate layout for each one. And as far as file storage, I still use one SDE geodatabase for almost all of my data so I just default to that in new projects. Pro doesn't actually require each project to have its own data source as the structure implies.

I think the website had a temporary problem as I was able to eventually find the right help page. Thanks for the response Kory. This is exactly the information I was looking for. We may not always see eye to eye but I do appreciate your willingness to participate in these forums and help answer questions of occasionally obnoxious end users.

I do agree that this a "boat anchor" as you put it. Not having backward compatibility on something as simple as this is just nonsense. Why the sudden switch to Arcade after having used Python for years?

Why are these rules so hidden? I couldn't even get it to come up in the Help. I typed it in the tool search. Trouble is that this appears way more limited than the attribute assistant. It only lets me do field calculations. I had it doing a location search before. For example, report a field from a feature class that this new feature (or modified feature) is within. Its also very unfortunate that this eliminates backward compatibility and renders the dataset uneditable in ArcMap. Come on Esri, stop making this stuff so difficult.

Michael Volz wrote: So if your SDE database is already upgraded to 10.5.1, the upgrade to 10.6 should run smoothly as it would bypass this bug that exists with the upgrade to SDE 10.5.1? Have all the annotation editors at your org been migrated to Pro so they are able to update annotation, because if the annotation editors are still using ArcMap they can no longer update annotation? The hope is that yes, if you have already upgraded to 10.5, the transition to 10.6 should run smoothly. We are a small organization, I am the only person that will ever mess with annotation. I do have other editors of data in the organization but they shouldn't ever be messing with annotation. If they for whatever reason needed to edit annotation I would have them download Pro. I do find this troubling though, Esri typically makes things backwards compatible but unfortunately this is not one of those things. One thing I am very happy about is how easy it is to upgrade Pro compared to the hour long process of updating ArcMap and ArcCatalog. And ArcGIS Server is even worse when it comes to this upgrade process.

After several different calls to Tech Support I finally got my geodatabase to upgrade and now I can also upgrade my annotation. It had something to do with the sde user in SQL Management Studio. Its sad these days that you have to be an IT guru to do some things in GIS. Specifically here is how my Support Analyst wrote it up: we were able to resolve the issue after resyncing the "sde" login to the database and granting it db_owner role and then running upgrade geodatabase tool on the database. This behavior is due to an existing defect. Here are the details of the defect: BUG-000100778 : Upgrade geodatabase tool at 10.5 fails with error [sde_branches : Error (-96) DBMS error code: 0] We had to also first upgrade to a 10.5 database before upgrading to 10.6.

The ribbon is actually pretty customizable. You can put just about any tool anywhere even if it doesn't make sense to anyone but you. And, of course, you can always use add-ins. I'm glad that the Pro team came up with a Rectangle zoom tool now. I like the Explore tool but sometimes those fixed zoom levels don't work as well as the rectangle zoom tool. Its good to have both options and also the ability to not have rectangle zoom on the ribbon if you don't want it as in Kory's case.

Honestly, I think its ok for now. I'm confident it had to with the import but things seem to be working now. It's just important to note for those importing from ArcMap, that you should check everything to make sure there were no errors. This being a new system, it works a bit different and there is no good way to have a perfect transition. I actually like the controls for symbology in Pro. Much less windows to work with, that's for sure.

I'm not aware of any graphics on the data view. However, when I try to use the select elements tool, it looks like some of my annotation is graphics. Not sure why and it doesn't appear I can delete them. I don't think those would affect other layers' symbology though.

Does this happen in all maps in ArcGIS Pro? In all Projects? I tried this in another map and did not experience the same behavior Is the map imported from ArcMap into Pro, or was it created in Pro? The map was imported from ArcMap into Pro. Can you share a map package that demonstrates the issue? I can if needed, however, on a whim, I removed the hatch symbol from that particular layer and added it again. The behavior returned to normal. I also noticed that the layer has other problems with drawing order (didn't match ArcMap). I have a few symbols that are hatches that overlay the solid fills. The symbol that I found the original problem on was a single symbol. This layer is my zoning districts including overlay districts and it has 21 different symbols associated with it. I have a feeling that because it is so complex, something must have happened during the conversion process from ArcMap into Pro and resulted in this strange drawing behavior.

This is a bit odd. I have a zoning map that has one of symbols that is a hatched fill on top of a solid fill. The trouble is on the map it flips them around and the hatch is under the solid fill: Shown another way: My workaround is to flip the symbols around and it displays on the map layout correctly but the preview is wrong: This has to be some sort of bug. I'm using 2.2.1

Thats not too bad for a workaround. Certainly not ideal because I can never be sure of what the printer margins are but for the map in question, I looked at the original mxd in ArcMap. In the case of ANSI E the margins are 0.25 for my particular plotter.
