My work with GIS technology often demands work in austere environments whether for emergency management or military operations. A PDF does some of the job but not like a dynamic map. Some of my work is with Collector/Survey123 that are available offline in a quasi-dynamic manner. That same capability to cache parts of a map would allow an incident staff to take a device in the field and work. Having that dynamic map would allow them to concentrate on the items of concern in their map and the features it shows.

Hi Mike, Great post! Any way you can share the data so that I can mess with it on my own? Thanks!

Hi Karisa, I am beginning to learn Arcade and, since one of my GIS roles is in emergency management in a hurricane state, I thought I would start with your excellent "how to" guide. I am having an issue getting past the initial code and can't seem to be able to troubleshoot it. When I paste the code as directed, I get the following error: Parse Error:Line 3: Unexpected token ILLEGAL and the map will not let me proceed. I have tried the code on the developer playground page as well and gotten the same result. Since I'm new to Arcade, any help you (or any other experts) can offer would be most appreciated. Cheers!

I think this would be a great addition to Dashboard applications as well.

I will update the driver tonight My crashes are data-type agnostic. I push the add data button and it crashes. Same thing when trying to open the contents pane. All I can do is move through the default map of the project. Spinning platter I am in the queue at work for a 2.2.1 install on a newer box but that's whenever a person with admin rights gets to me Yes. I send them every time. Thanks so much for the quick reply. Hopefully we can get these issues worked out. My guess is that it's something small since 2.1.x performed wonderfully on the same computer. Cheers!

2.1 worked wonderfully for me. I just upgraded to 2.2 and it crashes to simple tasks like opening the contents tab or pushing the add data button. I reinstalled but it's still doing it. Very frustrating. BTW: My computer exceeds all specifications to run the software.

I was very impressed with the Dashboards I saw at the UC this year. One of them, the Armed Conflict application in the Defense and Intelligence area displayed the time in the header in multiple time zones. The Esri team member there said that it was a script that would ping the world time service for that input. Would you please post that script? Thanks!

Not to discount the importance of student and other presentations that Andrew mentioned above but in an emergency situation, a clear understanding can save lives. The attached image is from the Los Angeles fire story map. I've found with the National Weather Service watch and warning feed that the legend displays all possible watch and warning categories. The area shown is either a Red Flag Warning, Hurricane Watch, Typhoon Warning, Tsunami Watch, or Winter Storm Warning. I am a GIS practitioner and am fairly sensitive to color but I can't tell any of the above apart, especially when transparencies are applied. A dynamic legend in a web map is long past due. For reference, the story map is located here and the tab discussed is 8th.

Beyond this idea, a briefing book template would be very welcome within the emergency management community. During Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria this year, there were many responders who could have used the ability to cache the latest incident information when they were out attempting to save lives and prevent suffering.
