I'm trying to wrap my head around this concept. Our current setup is two servers. One LITERALLY located outside the firewall, for public and internal consumption of specific maps. The other is inside for internal maps only. We are currently running 9.3 We are moving to 10.1. I feel like the way that things will go is as follows... Just starting to get into ArcMAP development and trying to get my bearings. From what I understand, Python is very much an internal scripting engine like VBA is for Microsoft. However, Python is also a language that can be used for web pages. My question is straightforward. If I have a webserver, and that webserver runs python and stores mxd files, can I have Python scripts that checks things like Feature Class count on an MXD and display that information on a web page? I'm thinking... Business Intelligence/Dashboard type of purpose. Anyone have an idea? ... View more

I have several layers. Council District, Parcels, Subdivision, Historical District, etc. They all contain certain data concerning everything I need to know. On an hourly basis a large part of my job is to collect this data for a given address, type up an e-mail and send it. I would like to automate this process. When I receive an e-mail for the data for a given address, I would like to select a Parcel of land, and populate a Layout window/PDF with the various bits and pieces of data from the layers that that Parcel resides within. I can VB code something... Build a Model... or setup Data Driven pages... I've done the second two already in ArcView, but other than Calculate Field/Value I haven't done VB(A) in ArcView at all yet. What is the recommendation? If I have to build a model, how do I output from a Model into something like a PDF/Layout Window? If I have to setup Data Drive pages, can I set it up to display the 'Currently Selected' parcel to check against for the Spatial Layers it resides in? Or would I need to do some Spatial Joins to bring all that data together? If I have to VB code, then where? I would love to start doing VB(A) within ArcView but I haven't had the time to research it yet?! If you've done anything like this... If you know of some great online tutorials that would point me in the right direction to learn this stuff... I would appreciate anything you have that might get me moving forward on this. I receive and process roughly 20-50 requests per day on your average day. Each request takes up 5-10 minutes. My question is this... is it possible to build a Model for creating new features? Let me explain in more depth. I have created Feature Classes (currently MDB stored soon to be SDE) for various city GIS objects (i.e., Buildings, Parking Lots, etc.). Whenever I get a new Subdivision CAD file from the developing engineer I pull it into ArcView, digitize the pieces we use (streets usually and any buildings that might be visible on the plat), then it's time to break out the editing tools. I right click on my "Location Annotation" feature in my Table of Contents. Edit Features -> Start Editing -> Select Template (Postal Address) -> Follow Feature -> Enter the Building/House number -> Place the text -> Then I have to enter the building number (again), prefix directional, street name, street type, suffix directional, and the apartment/office/etc (if there is one). What I am envisioning is this... Surely there is a way to develop a model that would let me enter the address as one field: 1234 E Somewhere St S It would break it up into the correct pieces and place those strings in their respective fields of the Annotation Feature class, and ask me if there is another address on that street to enter which would mean I only have to enter the building number because the other pieces are already sitting in memory... Is this a dream or is it just fantasy? Trying to Automate a process that whoever is in my position will be doing for as long as we have ESRI... Anyone have an answer for me? I figured out (with VB) how to do the breaking things apart.. but I still can't get Model Builder to take an input of text (or fields) then wait for me to click on the screen and add a new point feature and populate the feature from, say, an Excel file... I have an excel sheet loaded with address information. The dream Model here would do the following: 1.Ask me what Excel file to open 2.Open target Excel sheet 3.Iterate through list of addresses (rows) 4.As it hits an address (row), generate an XYZ feature class (point) and ask me to click to place it 5.Populate the newly placed feature class with specific fields from the Excel sheet Is this possible? ... I work for City Government, Tulsa, Oklahoma. My Geodatabases, SDE, are managed by out IT department. Twice per week, we get regular updates from another government entity, INCOG. This is the second time where I believe (but can't pinpoint the reason) the update to the SDE Databases has completely fried the Feature Cache I use. I think this is what is happening because when I geocode an address and pan to it. What usually takes roughly 10-20 seconds, now takes 3:45. And I used a stopwatch. Normally, I type in the address, hit enter. It says FOUND. I right click and select PAN TO. 20-30 seconds later that location is loaded on screen and ready for me to select parcels. Now, it can 3:45 seconds to get that entire page loaded. If I select a Parcel, it takes another 3:45 to load into the Identify window. So all in all, to verify addresses... what used to take under a minute, can now take upwards of 10-15 minutes. Because sometimes the geocoder get's you CLOSE... so you have to pan the screen... each pan takes 3:45 second. EACH PAN takes 3:45. HELP! I'm slowly losing my mind... ... View more
