A Raster Function Template is only one part of VRT. It would be good to have complete support, particularly being able to draw* polygon or square on a raster as "save as vrt" for Areas of Interest. (* or use a feature class, shapefile, ...)

Is Geoportal useful for desktop GIS (ArcMap/Catalog, Pro, Qgis, others) in an environment where all users are in a local area network? We have about 10 TB of files on local network shares wherein spatial data is intermingled with many other types such as standard office files (doc, xls, pdf, ...). From what I read the discovery mechanisms in Geoportal would be useful, but we definitely do NOT want people doing zip-clip-ship of the interesting things they find. They should be accessing the files directly though UNC paths or mapped drives.

Many thanks for this tool. It has saved me much time that would have otherwise been spent comparing multiple browser windows to answer questions that the Map App authors didn't anticipate. (Are polygons X & Y from 2013 or 2015? click, change layers, click, change layers, click, ...) Also note that even though FeatureClass to FeatureClass in ArcGIS Pro in can also convert services to local data, this tool will retrieve features from services that fc2fc fails with. So keep this one in your toolbox stash too!

It's too hard to see the actual LAS point data coverage extent. A LAS Dataset shows only the tile footprint area until you zoom in so that only a few tiles are within the view frame. One consequence of this is that it's very easy to omit areas or think you have coverage when you don't. LASD says we have coverage in red and purple areas However actual LAS point coverage is incomplete We ordered data to cover areas left out of the original purchase. When accepting the order we thought it was complete because the LASD showed it that way. It was only weeks later when trying to actually use it that we discovered there'd been a mistake in the Area of Interest. It would have been trivial to clear up that mistake with vendor at moment of delivery. However with the passage of time it is now a whole new purchase exercise. Work around: For all LASD run Point Statics as Raster. For performance use a cell size an order of magnitude larger than the average point density (10m works well for our data). It would still be better to have a built in LASD option though. Relying on side-car rasters means care and attention is needed to ensure the raster stays in sync with the LASD contents. It could be rolled into Create LAS Dataset and Add Files to LASD as part of the generating statistics stage, following the model used for generating and consuming overviews for rasters. Fig: LASD tile boundaries overlain on a point-stats raster. We quickly and effortlessly identify the data gaps without any extra work. No endless rounds of zooming closer and panning and refreshes.

Cue broken record: we've been asking to be able to permanently reorder fields in place for 20 years, since ArcMap v8. We see "only" ~33,000 votes now because that's this is just the latest incarnation of the feature request. It hasn't been done because it's hard. Changing a column's ordinal position is not in the SQL standard and not supported by most database vendors. There are two notable exceptions I'm aware of: MS Access and MySQL. There are various workarounds and most require recreating the table and deleting the original (a couple methods using this approach are described in this thread). My personal favourite so far is re-ordering in MS Access via personal gdb. However, it is to Esri's shame that they've never come out and said "Hey look, we hear you, we understand what you want. This, this, and this are why we haven't developed a solution". For that I am truly angry with them. It was only after a lot of time working in different problem domains and doing my own research that I understand why. Please Esri, live the courage of your convictions, and declare them (and why) when you have them.

I'm trying to package a project. In Pro I've run "Package Project" wizard and fixed all the warnings and errors that [Analyze] showed. After pressing [Package] it runs for several minutes and then fails with a generic "General function failure". I updated the script so it outputs as a table, for easier comparison: What is your "import arcpy" overhead? · GitHub Does anyone know how to add what the license type and status is? (are we currently in mode "Single Use, Concurrent, Concurrent but Borrowed, AGOL, AGOL but Offline" etc.?) And what about automatically appending to a public report Gist or similar?

Oh wow, I want times like that. It's so annoying to wait 10 secs for startup and then have the real work happen in half that time. I wonder why mine is so much slower. What's your machine and how are you licensed (AGOL Named User, Concurrent, Single Use, Portal, ...)? My machine: Dell Precision Tower 7810 2 physical processors: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2620 v3 @ 2.40GHz, 2401 Mhz, 6 Core(s), 12 Logical Processor(s) 32 GB Ram Win10 Enterprise x64, version 10.0.18362 Build 18362 C: and 😧 are Samsung SSD 840 EVO 500GB (SSD). Licensing: Pro: AGOL Named User ArcMap: Concurrent license manager (in same building). Pro's python 3.6 via Pyzo IDE: --- import arcpy overhead: 0:00:09.052498 ArcMap's python 2.7 via Pyzo IDE: --- import arcpy overhead: 0:00:06.414285 (I updated the code in first post so it will run in python 2.7 also)

I'm curious, how long does it take in your machine(s) for your scripts to get ready to start working? Put something like this at the beginning of some scripts and share the results. from timeit import default_timer as timer
start = timer()
from datetime import datetime, timedelta
print('=== {}'.format(datetime.now()))
start_arc = timer()
import arcpy
done_arc = timer() - start_arc
print('--- import arcpy overhead: {}'.format(timedelta(seconds=done_arc)))
#import os, math, ...
#carry on with your stuff
elapsed_time = timedelta(seconds=timer() - start)
# get timer seconds and convert to hh:mm:ss
print('=== Total Elapsed Time: {}'.format(elapsed_time)) After about a week and perhaps 30 trials in various circumstances the fastest time I've ever seen is 7.8 seconds, the slowest is 10.5, and the median is ~8.5. (updated code to run in py 2.7 and 3.6+)
