Thank you for contributing real information Kim. I'm sure all of these limitations and concerns could be addressed, but not if people aren't aware of them and aren't talking abou them. I'm a bit surprised by the lenient type checking for dates, as the sqlite developers come across as especially conservative and careful, to excessiveness even. Maybe it's the spatiallite wrapper that's undoing some of that. [Later] oh I see, the blessed path is to use the native built in date functions.

Feature Class to Feature Class and Feature Class to Geodatabase tools in ArcMap will do this. The same tools in Pro will not, however I wouldn't be surprised if they actually did work when fired directly from a python script. I think it's the validation routine that happens when an object is picked interactively in the tool that doesn't see or disallows p-gdb not the actual backend functions.

There is also the result object but using it adds too much scaffolding for my taste. It adds a cognitive load to understanding what a piece of code is actually about. I want to focus on the gp tool, not handling the messages from it. So instead of: import arcpy
results = []
results.append(arcpy.SomeTool_toolbox(some_input))
results.append(arcpy.AnotherTool_toolbox(some_input))
results.append(arcpy.DifferentTool_toolbox(some_input))
for result in results:
print(result.getMessage(result.messageCount-1)) How about something like: import arcpy
result = results.start_logging()
arcpy.SomeTool_toolbox(some_input)
arcpy.AnotherTool_toolbox(some_input)
arcpy.DifferentTool_toolbox(some_input)
print(result.getMessages())
Example found by way of user2856 in arcpy - Using for loop to print last messages from multiple processes? - Geographic Information Systems Stack Exchange

Important note: I've encountered circumstances in which Arc Pro will ignore a None transformation and silently pick the first one in it's list of what it thinks is appropriate when the tool is run. The way to verify if a transformation is applied or not is to look at the geoprocessing history in the metadata. (Tip: it’s easier to use the History panel than metadata, because it does the parsing for you.) Using arcpy and manually specifiying no transformation seems to be reliable.

(Excerpt from my internal KB) [...] Each time there was a message "Error returning fulfillment (FID-999...) to license server (SERVER)", where "SERVER" refers to a machine that no longer exists. Afterwards the total license counts for all products on this LM were wrong. Some higher, others lower. Our corporate license admin (Ryan Gould) supplied a recipe that fully resolved the issue. REPAIR CORRUPT LICENSE AUTHORIZATION Delete the licensing trusted storage: After deauthorizing your Concurrent Use licenses, stop the ArcGIS License Manager Service and close ArcGIS License Server Administrator. In Windows File Explorer, navigate to the following directory: C:\ProgramData\FLEXnet Delete all ArcGIS related files from the FLEXNet folder (or if there are only ArcGIS related files, you can simply delete the FLEXNet folder). Return to the ArcGIS License Server Administrator and re-authorize your Concurrent Use licenses (including 3D Analyst). Verify the details in the Availability folder and in the diagnostic report from the License Manager. You might need to “Start/Stop License Server >> Re-read Licenses” to correct Availability.

There are number of layer types which are not supported in Packages (Layer, Map, Mobile, Geoprocessing, ...). I'm forever creating duplicate copies of the same projects: one for editing and authoring, which contains all my reference layers and so one, and a 2nd just for packaging. Typically the only difference between these two for me is that the 2nd has the unsupported layer types removed. It would be really nice if there was a checkbox for Packaging along the lines of "Omit unsupported layer types" so I'm not managing these duplicates, and back porting changes from the master to the package whenever I discover another typo or need to adjust symbol style.

Thank you for articulating so well many of the frustrations I've had swirling in my brain but haven't been able to set down in words myself. I also appreciate that you take time to give kudos to the tech support people who do help as best they can, though unfortunately the refrain from them is more and more "put it in Ideas if you need this worked on". WRT to the blue-screens and strange errors: accept nothing less than ECC RAM, and Xeon CPU too if you can spec that. Since we've done that for our blue-screen occurences have gone way down. Unfortunately we can't do this for all our users, but we're trying. I can't say for certain this is the cure, but it's worked here.

I'm happy to send you a copy (should probably send me something that proves you have a license for ArcGIS desktop so I don't run afoul of Esri legal).

Helpful apples to apples comparison. Thanks. Also thanks for mentioning AV3. I fire it up from time to time just so I can feel what speed feels like. 😉

If you are experiencing delays, it sounds like an installation or pc configuration problem to me. I've noticed this on pc's configured by someone other than the primary user (i.e., general IT staff) and where the user does not have full admin permissions. .... Ensure that you have full admin permissions. I really hope this is a red herring. It's flat out not possible to enable full admin for all our GIS users. We've already dealt with a couple ransom ware attacks this year that made it inside the firewall. (Thankfully our IT folks caught and quarantined before real damage was done; was very time consuming for them though.) As the perpetrators grow sophistication we're going to have get tighter permissions not looser. There is no reason I've thought of for a user-space program like Pro to require admin permissions.
