Which version of Portal are you on? We're on 10.7. Can you upload a copy of the .json? I haven't used a custom vector tile basemap in production yet, so I haven't had a chance to run into any issues.

Unfortunately I haven't seen any way to change that GUI, it seems inherent to the data type. Text fields would be your best bet, like you're doing, with regular expressions, input masks, and/or calculations to ease the pain where possible.

I usually like to change the default value of a datetime field to now() to catch when they're filling out the survey. That may not apply in your situation. There are a couple ways to help keep the text datetime standardized. A regular expression in the constraint column: regex(.,'^\d{1,2}\/\d{1,2}\/\d{2,4}\s\d{1,2}\:\d{2}\s[ap]m$') to enforce 6/25/2019 10:50 am I had some issues with regular expressions in the Early Adopter version, which it looks like you're on, so I went back to the latest public release. or using an input mask in the body::esri:inputMask column like 99/99/9999 99:99 AA which gives you some guides as you type (see below)

Are you using ArcGIS Online or Portal for ArcGIS? On survey123.arcgis.com, click Create a New Survey, choose Using the Web Designer, enter the Name and Tags details, then in the Web Designer, just make a simple layout with a Note element that has a hyperlink to your survey (see below). Publish the survey, then on the Collaborate page, make sure Submitter is set to Everyone so everyone can see it (and not need a named user). Then you can click on the Share icon to get a link to the web survey you've created. Email that to your users and when they click on it it will open a web page in their device's browser with the web survey.

If you host the story map yourself (by downloading it from GitHub https://github.com/Esri/storymap-series), you can edit the CSS to remove the margin and padding on that element, however I'm not sure how to (if it's possible) in an ESRI hosted story map.

You don't need a named user for a public survey (submitter set to everyone). I just tested it with a survey of mine and I was able to download it without being logged into Survey123. I hadn't seen that thread. Like James Tedrick said, it's not supported in Android but you can workaround it like we said by putting the link on a webpage (specifically a quick web survey in my case). Yes, I was referring to Explorer for ArcGIS. For example, I have a garden plot layer they view, and they tap on one for a hyperlink to survey a plant there in Survey123 (passing the plot's ID to the survey).

Interesting, I hadn't tried sending the link in an email before. Is that what you're doing? My Android phone was unable to open it. I normally have the link to Survey123 in a popup in Explorer for my users, and that works fine on Android, but involving another app might be confusing for your workflow. A quick workaround that worked on my Android phone was to paste that link in a Note question on a web-based survey123 survey. So your email, if that's what you're doing, would just link to the URL for the web survey, which would say click here to open the survey. An extra click, but at least it's not another app.

I was able to customize an ESRI light grey vector basemap in our Portal with help from this story map: https://www.arcgis.com/apps/Cascade/index.html?appid=a74a8b251f6141fa9561041d36ea56e3 I created a quick style with the Vector Style Editor and downloaded it as a json. In Portal, I added an ESRI vector basemap to a webmap (NOT as a basemap, just as a normal layer; Living Atlas content needs to be configured in Portal), copied it as a layer in the TOC, then on that new copy, clicked the 3 dot menu, clicked on Save Layer. On that new saved item in Portal, on its item details page, you can Update style with the json you exported from the Style Editor.

In AGO's Map Viewer, you can manage the feature template if you are the owner of the layer or admin in your organization. On the Edit screen, at the bottom should be a button that says Manage. You can edit the feature template's labeling in there. This help article explains it: https://doc.arcgis.com/en/arcgis-online/manage-data/manage-feature-templates.htm
