You are somewhat limited on what can be done to improve performance since the services are hosted by ESRI (as opposed to your own instance or ArcGIS Server). Whatever their bandwidth or server limitations are you will be stuck with. That's ok if it has to be this way. A USB cellular modem would be a good tool to compare the school's bandwidth limitation with what is available on a less saturated network. Not that you can do a whole lot to change that. You might make this comparison before doing anything else. I see that you are using Feature Services. Those are intended for editing over http. If you only need to edit a few layers, use Feature Services for just those layers. Put the remaining layers in a Map Service (MapServer) and cache it (tiled). Map Services can be cached while feature services cannot. The thing is with Feature Services, the ArcGIS Server instance will have to render tiles before sending them to a client browser. A cached service has pre-rendered tiles waiting to be sent to a client browser. http://doc.arcgis.com/en/arcgis-online/share-maps/publish-tiles.htm If you go through the process above, looking at step 7, I think the key is to not enable feature access but do enable tiled mapping. This should give you a tiled (cached) map service and maybe a little better performance. Paul Lohr

Without hearing about specific workflows, this can't be answered very well. Here is my generalization. ArcPad is a more thoroughly thought out product that has been developed over quite a few years. Compare that to the relatively new ArcGIS Mobile for Windows. For complex data collection, ArcPad is not great but I have not seen anything better. ArcGIS Mobile for Windows adds what may be unneeded complexity of moving data back and forth with ArcGIS Server. With the recent changes in ArcGIS Server licensing and attempted forced integration of ArcGIS Online, who knows what ArcGIS Mobile for Windows might force an organization into. Currently ArcPad does not suffer from these problems.

Cathleen, To avoid using an ArcView license, what about adding the map service to ArcGIS Explorer Desktop? I don't know how the relationships will act. It may be worth a test.

vmod32, Does Collector for iOS not support custom URL schemes? bbrad24, If it does, here are a few ideas. With iOS, I would try one of the PDF annotation programs. Make sure the PDF annotation program has its own custom URL scheme. Put your PDF files in the application's sandbox area (using iTunes). Setup an attribute in your layer to store the URL, input the URLs somehow (for example, pdfedit:\\documentName.pdf). If Collector supports custom URLs, the user can tap the link then the PDF should open in whatever PDF annotation program you have. Somewhat of a wild guess.

For building queries for maps on ArcGIS .com // ESRI gave me this 1. Open ArcCatalog 2. Create a folder called Locators 3. Right click in this folder and choose to create new Address Locator *If this fails, you might have to Disable Back Ground Geoprocessing in ArcMap. 4. Once this dialog box is open, you??ll set the locator type to ??General ?? Single Field?? and reference the feature class you want to search on as well as the field to search 5. Do this for every Feature Class you want to search on 6. Once done, right click in the folder and this time choose to create new ??Composite Address Locator?? Exercise outlining how to do this in the help 7. When creating the composite locator, you??ll add the 5 locators you previously created. 8. Right click the composite locator and choose to share as a Service, and publish it to your Server 9. Visit your Rest Endpoint, and copy the GeocodeServer url 10. Follow this workflow from the online help to add the locator to your ArcGIS Online Organization a. Set it as the top locator to use before you hit save Mark, Did you get this to work? Which version of ArcGIS Desktop and Server?

We have had problems with web map applications and security. The regular arcgis.com map does not have this same issue. ESRI has known about a problem with one of our web map applications for over a month and there still has not been any resolution. As for outages. I noticed twice last week that some ESRI basemaps were down last week around 6:30 AM EST, probably for about 30 minutes. The status.arcgis.com site reported no issues.

Have you tried setting field aliases in your mxd? I think this will do it. Also could be done on geodatabase feature classes at the gdb level.

With WAAS corrections enabled and the right conditions we obtain submeter accuracy frequently. No base station. We use Trimble GPSCorrect to get WAAS corrections. GPSCorrect was not all that expensive the last time we purchased it. That was many years ago.

The settings of the HTML popup in ArcMap affect the display of popups for KML files. You may want to try loading the default XSL template before exporting to KML. There may also be a column name that is a problem for Google Earth.

The attribute column is called "NAME"? If that's the case, try displaying a different attribute column (if you have another). You can try copying the values to a new column - maybe call it "NAME_" or "NAME2".

Real time as in a continuously operating reference station? If this is what you are after, pretty sure you will need the Trimble GPSCorrect extension. Horizontal positions should be ok but vertical positions can be a problem because ArcPad does not use a geoid. Just in case that's where you are headed.

With that level of accuracy, it sounds like you aren't getting any corrections. That makes sense. You may need GPSCorrect. You will probably want that to do sub-meter work. I think the GeoExplorer 6000 series may not provide TSIP to ArcPad any longer (see the link below). If you have the NMEA output upgrade then you can probably connect ArcPad to the internal or external antenna. Not sure how this is done (perhaps through GPSController?). GPSCorrect should take care of the entire problem. http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/34178-ArcPad10-and-Trimble-6000-series-GeoXT?p=133453&viewfull=1#post133453 In the GPSController application, make sure NMEA output is turned off. Start ArcPad and check if the TSIP protocol has showed up yet. Probably a moot point but it may be worth trying. Still you don't have a way of getting corrections. 10 cm accuracy would be around 4 inches. You may want to check into using RTK corrections instead of WAAS since you are looking for accuracy finer than sub-meter. Some state Departments of Transportation have setup RTK systems that users can access over the Internet. Also there is Trimble VRSNow which provides corrections for Russian and American GPS satellites but is expensive. Do you need accurate vertical locations as well? If the answer is yes, Trimble Terrasync would be my choice over ArcPad. Paul Lohr
