I'm having the same problem uploading a zipped polygon shapefile to the ArcGIS Explorer site. I'm getting the same error #24305 "...the ring does not have enough distinct points." Hi Susan - thanks for posting the shapefile, I get the error too. I'm not actually sure what's causing the error in this case, I have forwarded this to the team and will post back when I know about a fix. The other failures in this thread are being looked at, although I dont have any news at this point, I will update when I get any information.

I'm getting an error when attempting to import a shapefile that has more than 1000 points. Do you know if this is documented? For example, what are the limitations on line and polygon features as well? There's a number of additions to the doc to help clarify some limits on uploads that will be available very soon (should be next couple of days), apologies this is not currently online. As the message you saw indicates, there is a feature limit on any type of upload (so that includes CSV) of 1000 features, and when geocoding address-based CSV data, there is a lower limit of 250 features. There is also a size limit on uploads of 10MB.

I would like to know if there is a setting so that the data is non-editable in a map this is published with ArcGIS Explorer Online. There's no way to make a layer of editable features non-editable - features stored in the map are editable, and for features coming from a feature service, the editability is controlled by the service itself. So currently options for non-editable features are those from: - a non-editable feature service - a map service - a WMS service - any services that are in the basemap Also, what would be the editing difference from a Shape File up-load vs data from a map service? You cannot edit features from a map service. Existing features in a shapefile can be edited or deleted, but there's currently no way to add features to these layers, although that is an enhancement we're looking at for a future release. Hope this helps some,

Thanks for posting the shapefile. The shapefile is ANSI, and the Language ID in the file is indicating ANSI. I'll have to refer this issue to another team, and I'll post back here with any information I can. I did changed my dbfDefault but still the problem exist. The dbfDefault setting will definately not make any difference to the upload or display in the browser - its only going to affect viewing the shapefile in ArcGIS Desktop on your system (the Silverlight runtime does not have access to your system registry to read this for security reasons). I was trying to find out any other ways around this issue - After doing some more research, I'm not sure that the windows arabic codepage can be encoded into the ANSI dbf file structure (there is not enough space available in the file structure to indicate the higher codepages). According to KB article 21106, you can have UTF-8 unicode shapefiles, so they would be able to store arabic characters correctly and it's possible the upload would work then; however, I cannot find out how to create a file like this, so I'm afraid I have no solution for this at the moment and I'll have to post back when I get some more information.

Hi, I can save a map with arabic characters by entering them directly into a pop-up of a Map Notes feature, and then re-open correctly, so I assume the problem is to do with the shapefile format and uploading. The .dbf part of a shapefile that holds the attributes is not written in unicode, so shapefiles can either have a locale ID written in to the DBF file, or an accompanying .cpg codepage file, to indicate the locale they are written in and so deal correctly with different alphabets. However, support for these two things is not universal. Can you post a sample of your data so we can check this out, and find out if the information is present, and also if it's not being honored on the upload of the shapefile? If you created the file yourself from ArcMap, then you might want to check out this Knowledge Base article that describes a workaround when shapefiles lack this information - is your system using this setting (if you're using ArcMap): http://support.esri.com/en/knowledgebase/techarticles/detail/21106

My file is simply a header row and a single row of attributes. A file with a single record should work OK - for example, I can import the following data that has a header row and then a single row of attributes, into a new layer with a single point: Title,Address,City,State,Zip Esri Headquarters,380 New York Street,Redlands,CA,92373 Can you tell us what the specific data you're trying to import is, or post a sample file that fails? Each reference layer has will have unique information in the pop-ups rather than a common set of attributes. This sounds like you're after something more like the Map Notes layers that currently exist - I'm afraid there's currently no way to import a dataset and create this type of layer - perhaps you can post your idea on http://ideas.arcgis.com?

I'm currently dealing with a similar issue with a point shapefile (1 point) where ArcExplorer seems to be trying to import it as a polygon. I keep getting an error saying that a polygon must have a certain number of rings or vertices to display. The error # is 24305. Anyone encountered this? Other shapefiles have imported fine. I'm afraid we've seen this error message returned when the actual reason for the failure is something else. Would you be able to post the problematic shapefile up on the forum (or email directly if you prefer - I'm sgill at esri.com) so we can check out the problem? Thanks,

Hi Bruce I think you're running in to some kind of a limit on vertex numbers or numbers of parts on an imported polygon here. I tried splitting your shapefile up, and it's just feature number 9 that's showing the problem, and splitting that feature into two separate polygons meant that both imported OK. I'll refer this one for more investigation. On the subject of the error messages, we're aware that the error messages are currently not very informative in many cases, and are working to improve this in a future release. I'll update this thread when I find out more on the issue, and make sure the help is updated with more information too.

I misunderstood the zip note - I thought it had to be in a folder No problem. I'll see if I can make that note about directories in zipfiles clearer in the help files.

Hi Nemorosus - I think the problem with your zipfile is that it contains a directory that then contains the files (e.g. see the Path column if you're using WinZip). http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisexplorer/help/#/Import_a_shapefile/01560000005p000000/ I just unzipped the files, and re-zipped them up directly, not inside a directory, and the upload worked fine for me.

I keep getting an error box with the message, "Failed to Import Shapefile - Invalid Shapefile." Hi - there's a few things that can prevent an import working - you must have all of the required files in the zipfile you import for example. There's a few tips at the bottom of the Import Shapefile help topic: http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisexplorer/help/#/Import_a_shapefile/01560000005p000000/ I think the simplest way to figure this out would be if you can post your shapefile on the forum we can test it out.

Hello All, The propblem I'm having is that any query I create in ArcExplorer Online won't allow the 'zoom to' feature to work with any query results. If a service does not have the field containing the actual Geometry exposed publically, then Explorer Online won't be able to draw the shapes on the map or zoom to them, although the Query will be able to return a list of results - this sounds like it could explain your problem, depending on the services you're using for the query. Try making a query from the service http://sampleserver3.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/BloomfieldHillsMichigan/LandusePlanning/MapServer and you should be able to see and zoom to the results. You can see there is a geometry field available on these services. Regards

I keep getting "The remote server returned an error: (407) Proxy Authentication required." error message I'e just tried creating a new Esri account, and then registering with ArcGIS.com, and it worked OK for me. I'm not sure what the problem could be - is there a proxy server in place where you're connecting from?

Hi Guillaume, An Esri global account must be registered with ArcGIS.com in order to log in to ArcGIS.com, or to Explorer Online. If you didnt do this step, you can do it by clicking the 'New Here' link in the sign-in dialog in Explorer Online which opens the Sign in page on ArcGIS.com; then click the 'Register your Esri Global Account' link on that page and follow the instructions. This help topic gives you full info on the process: http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisonline/help/index.html#/Registering_for_an_account/010q0000003p000000/ One other thing could be that both username and password are case sensitive. Hope this helps. We hope we can make the process of registering accounts a bit more straightforward in future releases.

I'm not sure, but I think you maybe posted in the wrong forum for this kind of question - if you can confirm which product you're using, I can move this thread to a more appropriate place for you.
