With default ArcGIS Server settings for dynamic mapservices when ArcGIS Explorer 2D makes a request to the server image files are written to the "arcgisoutput" folder on the server. ArcGIS Explorer downloads the images from this folder. The request that ArcGIS Explorer makes will be something like: http://<server>/arcgisoutput/_ags_mapd164d97f465e46fd886ab9c5f64f6dbb.png My best guess is that security settings on the server are not allowing the ArcGIS Explorer client to access the images from the arcgisoutput folder. You can check this by using a web debugger to see if the internet request is being blocked by the server. On a windows server you can check the security setting on the output folder in IIS Manager.

Lance, I took a look at your application configuration. When I open the map, ArcGIS Explorer "runs out of display" resources (this is a windows limit), and it is basically not useable. The instability will vary from machine to machine. Some may be able to view it and others will not. The difference between 1500 and 1700 that is causing this to occur is the enhancement to the table of contents where service sublayers and legend items are shown in the table of contents. Right around 1300 legend items is the limit for my computer. For services we do not show legend items if there are more than 100 for a layer. We do this to try and stay under the limit. For example in the picture above Terrestrial Ecosystems has more than 100 classes (603) so the legend items are not shown in the table of contents. Your map has around 300 layers in it, and likely a thousand plus legend items. Would it be possible for you to create multiple maps (application configurations) perhaps a series with specfic uses and smaller numbers of layers?

I notice in one of the screen shots that you sent that the transformation had been set, and that is what I did to reproduce the problem. When the transformation is set to "none" the photo is geotagged at the clicked location. http://forums.arcgis.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=8014&d=1312186167

The easiest thing to do is: Save the image service layer out of ArcMap as a Layer file, or create a layer package, and add the layer to ArcGIS Explorer. ArcGIS Exlorer will honor the layer properties defined in ArcMap (or ArcGlobe if using 3D). Mark

Darryl, I took a look at this, and found that I could not reproduce the problem if I set the map coordinate system to RD_New.. similar to what Andrei reported. However, If I set a transformation (Amersfoort to wgs 1984), I do see the photograph placed, away from where I clicked. To explain the difference between your two computers, it may be a difference of the map and specifically whether a transformation is being used or not. Mark

No. There is no functionality in ArcGIS Explorer to get the Z value of geometry from a feature. If the Z value was an attribute of a feature, you could see it in a popup, but that would require converting the vertices of your line to points, and attributing the points. We are considering "Z measure" for a future release. Mark

I can't find any add-ins in arcgis.com. How can I find all the add-ins for arcgis explorer desktop? this is really frustrating. I used to be able to navigate to a repository, now it is more difficult. If you are searching for content at the http://www.arcgis.com site. Make sure you are searching "all content" and not just 'web content' Mark

Maybe I'm imagining things, but didn't Explorer used to be able to display map tips before 1700? I can't get them to work anymore on layer files. Also, I can't get popups to display for layer files that consist of a feature class with a table joined to it. This used to work fine in 1500, and I haven't made any changes except installing 1700. Is anyone else experiencing this? I have reproduced both of these problems in ArcGIS Explorer 1700 and we will be working to fix these regressions. In summary: ArcGIS Layers (layer files .lyr and Layer Packages .lpk) no longer show maptips when viewedin 2D. (the maptips do display in 3D) ArcGIS Layers (layer files .lyr and Layer Packages .lpk) with joins do not display a popup window when the feature is clicked. Mark

The error may indicate that the URL(s) for the services used in the basemap cannot be accessed by your computer. This is sometimes seen in organizations that use proxy servers or block specific sites. If you open the attached NMF file does it display the World Topo service? From Add Content in ArcGIS Explorer, can you: Add GIS Services... New Server Connection Server Type: ArcGIS Server Server: http://services.arcgisonline.com/arcgis/services Click next to connect. You should see a number of services, and you should be able to add them. If you cannot add the server connection or services, there is something about your internet settings or configuration that is blocking access. If the BaseMaps from the basemap gallery do not work, but you can open the attached NMF or connect directly to the services, the following URL may not be accessible, and needs to be, for the basemaps to work. http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemaps.xml Specifically for the Bing Basemap you need access to the following URL(s): http://serverapi.arcgisonline.com/ http://t0.tiles.virtualearth.net/ <-- Microsoft servers For OpenStreetMap: http://a.tile.openstreetmap.org Mark

ArcReader supports local disconnected geocoders. It does require that you publish your map as a PMF file (publisher extension). ArcReader is read only and the user experience is different from ArcGIS Explorer, but it may be able to do what you need???
