Looking at the picture I don't think the problem is specific to your dataset, I would think that I would see the problem with any parcel data. What coordinate system is your data in? What coordinate system is your map in? What data type (geodatabase, shapefile, SDE etc..)? Thanks, mark

I would think that any slowness with the bing data would be due to bandwidth or bing servers. If you changed your map to use a coordinate system other than webmercator auxillary sphere, that will slow it down too, as the tiles are re-projected on the fly client side, which adds an extra step. Mark

I am trying to reproduce the problem. Using ArcGIS Explorer 1700 and this layer package. http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=327bf28f53114f5b82a22a4e6746e42f I am not seeing a problem with the display of the data. I just add the layer package to the default map. For those seeing a problem can you share a layer package that shows the problem, or use the one referenced and see if you have the problem with it? Or is this perhaps a problem related to referencing data that is changing (being edited) and requires cache to be cleared to see the latest edits? Thanks, Mark

Looking at this further we uncoverd an error in ArcGIS Explorer 2D when it is fetching information from a server that is setup in a reverse proxy or virtualized environment. If you use an HTTP debugger you might see something like: (example is made up the URLs are not real) http://services.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/services/demographics/MapServer Followed by a failed request for an image: http://serverx/arcgisoutput/_ags_mapb71db130f8314cd0a26891b589ebefce.png If you were to open a web browser and replace serverx in the failed request with services.arcgisonline.com... http://services.arcgisonline.com/arcgisoutput/_ags_mapb71db130f8314cd0a26891b589ebefce.png and it displays the PNG image in the webbrowser, the problem you are having is due to a bug in ArcGIS Explorer. This problem is fixed in the next release (1750). We are still working on a couple more issues, but expect to have ArcGIS Explorer 1750 available for download within the next 3 weeks. For 1750 users (users of the future as of this writing) that read this forum posting. In a reverse proxy server situation, ArcGIS Explorer makes requests on 4 threads. Each thread will create one failed request, and then switch to another method for fetching the tiles from the server. So, seeing failed requests in a web debugger is not always unexpected. Mark

A globeservice will give you the best performance, but it does require you to build a full cache before you can use the service. DEM data published as an image service can also be used as elevation. In this mode the elevation is genereated on demand, and you may see surface seams and spikes, as the data is pulled in and rendered. This data is not cached, so it will do this every time you use the service. Which way is best, really depends on the use case. For an elevation "basemap" used by many users a fully cached globeservice is probably worth the investment. You can also use the image service elevation in addition to the globeservice.. the elevation layer on "top" is the one that gets used for display. Mark

Janice, It sounds like it is just a network connectivity or permissions issue. On the machine that does not connect to the data, if you right click on the layer and click Properties - Source Data. What does it say for the data source? On that machine if you use windows explorer and browse to where the data is, does it allow you to access the data? Mark

You could try authoring the map so that setting visibility on the parent node, will give you what you want. When you set visibility on child nodes of a service it builds a cache for the nodes that are turned on, and will do this for each combination. Once cache is built up locally for each combination, when you change layer visibility, it still disconnect and reconnects to the local cache, which does stutter a bit and refresh the display. When you set visibility on a parent level node, it doesn't change the connection to cache, or do anything with the cache, so it is much faster and smoother, and will likely meet the needs of what you are trying to do. I have attached a map. It references the same service twice, but the visiblity of child nodes is different in each. I also changed the name in the table of contents, to match the child nodes that are turned on. Toggling the visibility of the parent nodes should give you the performance you are looking for.

I just uninstalled build 1700 from my users and re-installed 1500. The main reasons for this step back : a)Projection and projection transformation problems. The users use a lot x,y through find tool, a lot of times the x,y through GGRS_87_to_WGS_84 were incorrect b)ArcGIS explorer crashes a lot of times when raster data is loading and we cannot send reports c)Notes taken and opened in another software e.g. Google Earth were incorrect a) We have identified the problem with how ArcGIS Explorer applies (or rather does not) transformations and we are working on a solution. b) What kind of raster data? Does the crash occur in both 3D and 2D? Does an error message appear? what does it say? Is there a lot of content in the map, or does it occur when you load in the first raster (randomly)? c) My guess would be that you have a coordinate system and map transformation applied when you create the content for google earth, and problem 'a' is also showing itself for this? If you use an ArcGIS Explorer default map, create a note and then share it as KML, the KML should display in the same location in Google Earth. Mark

We have identified a problem with the map transformation logic in ArcGIS Explorer and are working to fix it. Once fixed we will release an updated version of ArcGIS Explorer. We do appreciate your feedback, and specifically bringing this issue to our attention. Sometimes, it just takes more time than desired to determine what the problem is, and provide a solution... Mark
