In the scenario where you overwrite layer packages that are referenced in ArcGIS Explorer maps..  ArcGIS Explorer will see the layer package as broken if the structure, layer Count, Layer names, layer order change inside of the package.  this is because ArcGIS Explorer is trying to persist how the layers withing the layer package were ordered in the ArcGIS Explorer map.  If ArcGIS Explorer encounters a mis-match, something about the number of layers or names that it cannot re-hook to the map the broken dialog appears. You can easily re-create and see this by: In ArcMap Add a Layer named 'original' Create a Layer package with one layer name "LayerPackage.lpk" Open LayerPackage.lpk in ArcGIS Explorer Save the Map as your Default map. Close ArcGIS Explorer Back in ArcMap.. change the layer name 'original' to 'New Name' Package the layer overwriting "LayerPackage.lpk" Start ArcGIS Explorer The Layer in ArcGIS Explorer will be broken. The above also explains why overwriting 9.3.1 layer packages with version 10 layer packages does not work in ArcGIS Explorer.  Internally we changed the name of the layers to account for ordering issues that we had with the original 9.3.1 packages. In a future ArcGIS Explorer release we will look into providing an option to repair/reload packages that are "broken" due to the mismatch of content in the package. I would expect 1750 to be the same as 1700 in regards to basemaps. When you start ArcGIS Explorer it writes basemap 'cache' to %tmp%\E3\httpwww.esri.comsoftwarebasemapsbasemaps Do you see basemaps in this folder on the machine that is having problems? Don, In most cases it is the graphics card or graphics card driver. Often updating the graphics card driver resolves the issue, but this is not always the case, or even possible...  depending on graphics cards and computer manufacturer. As mentioned in the previous reply to this post the system check utility is a good place to start.  It will report your current graphics card.  The firtst step is to update the driver, if possible. In general NVIDEA and ATI graphics cards tend to work, driver updates usually resolve issues.  Integraged Intel graphics cards have mixed results and applicable driver updates are spotty, especially in older models.. Jane, Think of the application configuration as being the map. When you make a change to the NMF, you will need to modify the application configuration and add the updated NMF to it. The default map still opens after making changes to the NMF that the config points to. The config does not point to an NMF file.  When you create the configuration and set the map to open, the Map/NMF is copied into the configuration.  It is part of the configuration.  If you update the configuration, users of the configuration should see the new map that you have put into the configuration. Jane, It should be working. I tried it with 1750, and starting ArcGIS Explorer shows me the map from the configuration. I started the application configuration manger and specified the map to use. Then I clicked OK and saved the configuration to my server. (ex. \\server\c$\wwwroot\server.ncfg) In ArcGIS Explorer I then set the application configuration to http://server/server.ncfg When I start ArcGIS Explorer it uses the specified map.  As an ArcGIS Explorer user, I modified the map and saved it as my default map, but the next time I started ArcGIS Explorer it still uses the map from the configuration.   I also see the updates as desired, when I modify the map in the configuration.  It is possible that there is something else causing a conflict.  If you try the above experiment, just the one setting, does it work? For the world imagery you can add the service from the ArcGIS online server. http://services.arcgisonline.com/arcgis/services    World_Imagery add content --> GIS Services --> New Server Connection Once added to ArcGIS Explorer, In the layer properties, enable popups for the service. Right Click Layer in Table of Contents --> Properties --> Popup Content --> check "Display a popup window" When you click on the image you will see a popup  window with information about the imagery at the clicked location.   In many places there are multiple scales of imagery, and in those instances you will see a "multi-hit window" allowing you to choose the sublayer you want information about. After selecting the sublayer you will see a popup window with the imagery information. -Mark ... View more
