Dave, You could add the layers from http://services.arcgisonline.com/arcgis/services and create your own basemaps exactly the way you want them. http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisexplorer/1700//en/add_gis_services.htm# Once you have added the data, and have it looking the way you want, you can save it as a basemap. http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisexplorer/1700//en/command_save_as.htm# Mark

Dustin, Maybe the URL to the basemaps is blocked on your computer? This is how the basemaps work. When you start ArcGIS Explorer (on Startup) ArcGIS Explorer sends the following request: http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemaps.xml ?? english language Basemaps.xml named differently for other languages. This will return the following: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!-- updated 19/12/2011 11:39 a.m. --> <Basemaps> <basemap file="basemap6.nmf" group=" " name="Bing Maps Aerial"/> <basemap file="basemap7.nmf" group=" " name="Bing Maps Hybrid"/> <basemap file="basemap8.nmf" group=" " name="Bing Maps Road"/> <basemap file="basemap0.nmf" group=" " name="World Imagery"/> <basemap file="basemap2.nmf" group=" " name="World Topography"/> <basemap file="basemap9.nmf" group=" " name="World Streets"/> <basemap file="basemap11.nmf" group=" " name="Imagery with Labels"/> <basemap file="basemap5.nmf" group=" " name="World Physical"/> <basemap file="basemap10.nmf" group=" " name="OpenStreetMap"/> <basemap file="basemap3.nmf" group=" " name="World Terrain"/> <basemap file="basemap12.nmf" group=" " name="Oceans"/> <basemap file="basemap13.nmf" group=" " name="National Geographic"/> <basemap file="basemap14.nmf" group=" " name="Light Gray Canvas"/> </Basemaps> From this ArcGIS Explorer makes the following requests for basemaps. http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemap6.nmf http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemap6.png http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemap7.nmf http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemap7.png http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemap8.nmf http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemap8.png http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemap0.nmf http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemap0.png http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemap2.nmf http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemap2.png http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemap9.nmf http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemap9.png http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemap11.nmf http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemap11.png http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemap5.nmf http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemap5.png http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemap10.nmf http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemap10.png http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemap3.nmf http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemap3.png http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemap12.nmf http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemap12.png http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemap13.nmf http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemap13.png http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemap14.nmf http://www.esri.com/software/basemaps/basemap14.png The basemaps are cached locally on your computer at the following location: Inside the folder you will see all of the basemaps and thumbnails for the basemap gallery: If you can access all of the above URL's and the basemaps are downloadable, it should work. ArcGIS Explorer reads the basemaps from the cache folder. It may be that you have something on your computer or network that blocks the downloading of the basemap files. -Mark

It is a problem with ArcGIS Explorer 1750, specifically for layer packages. A layer file (lyr) will work for showing attachments in the popup window. The problem with layer packages will be fixed in a future release. ArcGIS Explorer 1700 will also work for viewing attachements from a layer package. Mark

ArcGIS Explorer does not have classification symbol renderers. Using a Layer file is the correct approach. You can use 'Draw Order' on the tools tab to position the layer in the desired drawing order. Click on the layer in the Table of Contents Then use draw order on the tools tab.

If the sid images are displaying in the correct location in ArcMap you can use ArcToolBox to define a coordinate system for the sid. ArcGIS Explorer needs all data to have a defined coordinate system in order to display it.

In ArcMap if you look at the spatial reference for the imagery layer (layer properties -> source tab) it likely says 'Undefined' If you know coordinate system that your landsat imagery is in, you can use ArcToolBox to define the coordinate system for the layer. In toolbox use Data Management tools -> Projections and Transformations -> Define Projection Once the spatial reference is defined it will open in ArcGIS Explorer.

At the moment the only way to provide the ArcGIS Explorer desktop presentation, without installing GIS software, would be to capture a video of it and share the video.

You have to use ArcGIS Explorer Desktop to play the presentation. The presentation is stored in the ArcGIS Explorer Map (NMF). If the data used to create the map is also accessible to the user, you can just share the NMF with another. They open the NMF in ArcGIS Explorer and play the presentation. Here is an example: http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=79d977725651430fbe791ac8d5d46c88 Mark

You are correct it is automatically hidden along with the geometry field. Why do your users need to see the ObjectID? This is something we could look into getting changed for a future release. Thanks, Mark

In some cases this issue will occur for 10.1 as well. The next version of ArcGIS Explorer Desktop will have a reload/replace option for the user to help mitigate this. We will inform the ArcGIS Explorer user that the package contents have been updated and ask them to load the updated package.

In the scenario where you overwrite layer packages that are referenced in ArcGIS Explorer maps.. ArcGIS Explorer will see the layer package as broken if the structure, layer Count, Layer names, layer order change inside of the package. this is because ArcGIS Explorer is trying to persist how the layers withing the layer package were ordered in the ArcGIS Explorer map. If ArcGIS Explorer encounters a mis-match, something about the number of layers or names that it cannot re-hook to the map the broken dialog appears. You can easily re-create and see this by: In ArcMap Add a Layer named 'original' Create a Layer package with one layer name "LayerPackage.lpk" Open LayerPackage.lpk in ArcGIS Explorer Save the Map as your Default map. Close ArcGIS Explorer Back in ArcMap.. change the layer name 'original' to 'New Name' Package the layer overwriting "LayerPackage.lpk" Start ArcGIS Explorer The Layer in ArcGIS Explorer will be broken. The above also explains why overwriting 9.3.1 layer packages with version 10 layer packages does not work in ArcGIS Explorer. Internally we changed the name of the layers to account for ordering issues that we had with the original 9.3.1 packages. In a future ArcGIS Explorer release we will look into providing an option to repair/reload packages that are "broken" due to the mismatch of content in the package. Going forward, if you overwrite packages ensuring that the exact same layers (same layer order) are in the package, it will work as desired.
