Hi there. I'm having trouble connecting to an arcgis server 10 from a 10.2 desktop for administration purposes. When creating the connection I get this error: We were unable to connecto to: http://servername/instacename. Error: No resource could be found at that address. Does this mean desktop 10.2 can't manage a 10.0 server? Thanks, Duarte

support for wfs in javascript api is a basic requiremente today. Agree with MAGISNC: "Because missing the support of WFS, we can not effectively promote the use of ESRI APIs to build webapps for organizations asking for Mashups with OGC compliant mapservices. This point is very important for users in Europe where Inspire directive defines OGC as the standards for web mapping."

I find there is little information on how dynamic layers work and how to manage them in all aspects of a web app, like querying, identifying, printing, etc. More examples are needed...

So, according to esri, since 10.1, we can make joins programmaticaly when using dynamic layers: http://bit.ly/JxdYoG "Dynamic layers Dynamic layers allow clients to change layer appearance and behavior on the fly in a map service. Using dynamic layers, you can do the following things: Define which layers will appear in a map. Define whether labels will appear for a layer. Define layer symbology. Define how layers are rendered (simple, unique value, class breaks). Define the position and order of layers in the map. Remove an existing layer from the map. Add a new layer to the map. Modify joins to an existing layer/table. Add joins to an existing layer/table. Add joins to a new layer/external table." Can anyone please share a simple example?? No matter what I do can't make this work!! Thanks.

Reporting my findings - might be useful to someone else. In fact it seems impossible to reduce the connections used by arcgis server, or arcgis desktop for that matter. Connections are always kept open with a transaction. So PgBouncer cannot optimize these connections. Why ESRI chooses to keep a transaction is unknown to me. Also, arcgis server opens 2 connections to PgSQL for every mapservice. So if you have 20 mapservices you'll have 40 connections open in PgSQL. Only when a service is shutdown due to innactivity timeout do you get its connections closed. This does not seem scalable at all to me. Maybe things will change in 10.2??

Hi there. I'm looking at reducing number of connections from ArcGIS Server 10 services to a PostgreSQL 8.4 geodatabase. I'm seeing 2 connections per map service. These connections appear as "<IDLE> in transaction", ie they are not doing anything. My question is how to reduce the number of connections. Is there a configuration setting I can use? Also, has anyone used PgBouncer with ArcGIS Server? Thanks, Duarte

hmm. i have to rephrase this. I can create z-m-zm coordinates in postgis 1.4, using the 2d geometry types strings (POINT, LINESTRING, etc.). Postgis parses the coordinates to see there are z or m. I just cannot use the geometry types strings that esri uses "POINT Z", "LINESTRING Z", etc. Duarte

Hello Vince. Thanks for your answer. I was convinced the ogc sfs 1.2 referred to suffixes without any spaces (eg. POINTZ). I will take this question to the postgis folks. I'll post here if I find a solution. Anyway, I cannot get postgis 1.4 to create a Z,M, or ZM feature using well known text. Only 2.0 (maybe 1.5?) does this. Regards, Duarte

Hi there. I have been trying to convert between esri's st geometry to postgis geometry by using sql. I'm having trouble when there are more de 2 coordinates, eg when there's m and/or z coordinates. What I tried is to convert from st to well known formats (wkb, wkt, ewkb, or ewkt), and from these build a postgis geometry using it's available sql constructors. For instance: select st_geomfromewkb(st_asbinary(shape)) from tablename select geometrytype(geomfromewkb(st_asbinary(shape))) from tablename For instance, if my tablename has lineZ or lineM, postgis detects it as being of type point... What I've found is that esri functions return geometry types that are not recognized by postgis, like LINESTRING ZM. Postgis uses "plain" LINESTRING in these cases. So there is a mismatch in geometry type names that esri uses that prevent the use of geometry constructors in postgis, even though we are in "interoperability land"... Has anyone found this problem? fast forward to 2012... I can't project a feature class from one dataset to another. It always places the output in the root of the output gdb. So what is the workflow designed by esri for this simple, frequent (I imagine) use case? Thanks, Duarte

Faster connections to ArcSDE geodatabases, by connecting 1 time and reusing the connection from cache. When you want you could click the "Refresh connection" button to see new content, or other changes made in the geodatabase structures (new/renamed/deleted Feature Datasets/Classes, Tables, Rasters, etc.). This would be a vast improvement for those of us who have to work with ArcSDE in ArcMap. Today every time you connect to ArcSDE you have to wait 1 full minute before you see its contents and are able to select what you want to load into your map. If you cached the contents of the geodatabase, you would only wait the first time.

Improve layout composing capabilities with up-to-date functionality, like more built-in shapes (rounded corners rectangle, etc.), transparency (0-100%), gradient fills, image fills, etc. Today if you want to print a simple poster with a map you can not do a good enough job with ArcMap alone, and I'm not talking of pro level. And it would be simple to improve that.

I also think wavelet compression formats are best for very large images. But JPEG2000 has an horrific performance, and others are expensive. You can get a free ECW encoder for images up to 500MB (lookup ERDAS' site). You should consider creating Tiled GTIFF files with JPEG compression. From my experience, this format is very performant and compatible with a wide array of GIS software. You additionally need to create the pyramids.
