Paul, My projects are evolving into a similar thing you have going on. What I'm doing to work-through the different scales is over time I'm copying maps AND Layouts, renaming them to the size I want and then adjusting symbology as necessary. This way my data all dynamically updates as I update my .gdb's and I have a map for every occasion so to speak.

I'm sure there are excellent reason why there is Catalog View and Catalog Pane but I think combining them into a single entity like.... "Catalog" might be more simple. It doesn't have to run independently like ArcCatalog did but I think a simplified and combined "Catalog" that acts in much the same way File Explorer does in Windows would be more user friendly.

Great Thanks Kory, I found this thread yesterday because I returned to a project I hadn’t been in for many months and had to remember exactly what I did and why in order to fill a new request. Having a way to take notes or have Arc automatically take some notes for us would get a lot of use by me! -Sean

Great idea! I'd like to add that building this into each project means projects that are reopened would load faster since open panes (maps and Layouts) would not need to be drawn again. At the very least allow us the ability to have this be the default behavior if it fits our work flows. ("Close all tabs and save project").

This post looks a little older and I did read up on the Idea Notepad in ArcMap as suggested by @Kory Kramer in the suggestions. I'd like to comment that this functionality would work even better (and make more sense) in the ArcGIS PRO environment. I'd like not only a place to add notes as suggested above but I'd also like some sort of "Auto-Authoring" that records what I did within a project. For example, if I create a new map to create a Power Point slide for a Board meeting I'd like the Note editor to automatically record that I created a new Map (and likely a new Layout) on a certain day. Then, I cold add a custom text to the log stating that it was for the Q2 board meeting or whatever the case might be. Is there a way to re-post this idea for ArcGIS PRO? Is there a way to "elevate" it's status so it is reviewed again now that we have a new platform? I think it's even more relevant now in PRO than before - and it was a good idea to begin with.

POST
|
I was asked to re-post a message I had posted elsewhere here to help add to this discussion. I generally like the direction PRO is headed in but is anyone else experiencing terrible performance - just doing normal tasks locally? I'm attaching Two screenshots, one showing my system specs, and the other one showing my GPU specs. My original post also had a third screenshot of my task manager at the time I was working. Unfortunately that shot was lost when moving this message to this thread. The Task Manager image showed my CPU at about 65%, My RAM at about 50% and my GPU at roughly 80%. The screen shot of my task manager was taken while I have two instances of ArcGIS Pro running. In one instance I changed labeling properties for a layer. In the other instance I was zooming to a new extent. This initiated the spinning wheel indicating that PRO is working.... ArcGIS Pro has been in this state for over 5 minutes now with the task manager running this hard. Granted - my maps ARE feature and graphics intensive, BUT I could perform this same operation with two instances of ArcMap on a slower machine in about 3-4 minutes. PRO should be faster than ArcMap, not slower. Is anyone else experiencing this? I don't want to have to send all of my data to ESRI and work with technical support to find out simply that they replicate the problem... I sincerely want ArcGIS PRO to perform like the next generation GIS platform. As I mentioned above, I do like the general direction they are heading with respect to PRO but I am extremely frustrated with migration when not only was the transition somewhat less than intuitive, but now after migration of my workflows I'm finding myself LESS productive than I was on ESRI's old product on a less capable computer.

Kory, This is exactly what I want but when I rename in the TOC my tab on top does not automatically and dynamically update as yours does. My idea still stands in that I find it intuitive to right-click the tab on top and rename even though this achieves the same result. (Nothing wrong with a few ways to accomplish the same task). I’ll have to start another ticket with Tech support to figure out why when I rename in the TOC my tab doesn’t update. Its not a priority but what you show in you linked video is what I’d like to happen if I rename my map in the TOC. I have to rename in Catalog for my tab name to change. If I rename in the TOC and then close the tab and then reopen it, the name on the tab that opens will be correct. (Probably because the name in catalog is updated). At any rate there is a disconnect somewhere in my system – but I’ve got more pressing tech support issues revolving around performance that I need to addressed before this one. Thanks, Sean

I'd like to be able to rename Layouts and Maps in ArcGIS PRO by right-clicking on the tab on top rather than being forced to do it in the Catalog View or Catalog Pane. I'd like any renaming whether in the tab (theoretically), or in Catalog View or the Catalog pane to dynamically update the name of the tab or the name of the layout or map in Catalog View or the Catalog Pane (vice-versa assuming my idea is adopted). Right now when I rename a Layout in Catalog while the tab is open the tab does not rename until I close it and re-open it.

Kory, As an addendum to my prior email about Office 365, specifically I’m noticing performance hits when trying to label complex feature classes. I have a feature class that has three label classes based on SQL expressions, and then three different labeling schema’s and that combination seems to slow my performance down considerably. I just don’t know if the performance I’m seeing is due in part to some sort of conflict with MS Office 365 or if Pro just takes longer than ArcMap labeling…. Sean

Yes Windows ten…. However, with regards to MS Office: We are working through MS Office 365. Do you have the ability to replicate that environment? In my experience there are considerable differences in the way windows (and the programs within it) work when in conjunction with MS Office 365. Thanks very much for the feedback. Does anyone there have the ability to test Pro with MS Office 365 generally regarding performance? I’m beginning to wonder if there’s a connection between general performance issues in Pro and MS Office 365. Thanks, Sean

Kory, Thanks for the reply and testing. How about when loading a new layout? Can you open a new layout and then type in Word while the layout is loading? Maybe I'll have to get on the horn with tech support again.... -Sean

I've noticed that when I save a project or export a layout if I switch windows while the project is saving or exporting that ArcGIS PRO will revert to the window where I was saving/exporting when the operation is complete even if I'm actively working in another window. I would like it of Saving/Exporting was kept in the background if I'm working in another window. If you'd like to test this try opening a Word document, then go save your ArcGIS PRO project. While the project is saving switch back to your Word document and type. When ArcGIS PRO finishes saving it will automatically interrupt your typing in Word to show you it has finished saving the project. You can also try writing an email or anything else, ArcGIS PRO interrupts anything else I work on while it saves.

Kory, Is there anyway to "resurrect" this Idea into ArcGIS PRO? I know you mentioned that we are able to copy label class properties now in 2.1 but I really think we need the equivalent of a .LYRX file for labels. An example I'm working with today is standardizing Township/Range/Section Labels for various sized templates. I'd LOVE to be able to save a label just like a layer file and then import that into each template in order to assign the same properties to a feature in different templates. As it is right now I have literally had to write down my label properties for each template and then re-create them for each layout.

I would like to change the default behavior when clicking on a item in the TOC. Right now when clicking on an item to change the symbology the Gallery comes up by default. I'd like to change this so that Properties come up rather than the gallery. I almost always change symbology via Properties and rarely use the Gallery. I understand that many users probably prefer it to default to Gallery but can we at least have the ability to customize this behavior?
