When Right-Clicking on a Legend in the TOC there is an option to remove from Legend. Please Add the Option to "Add Item to Legend". Dragging items from the TOC up into the Legend TOC is very clunky and since there is already a "Remove from Legend"just include an Add Item To Legend with a drop down list of the layers available in the map. Dragging ANYTHING for any reason in the TOC is very slow and not at all smooth. If things dragged smoothly and quickly I'd appreciate the functionality but it's almost unusable as it is with maps that have a lot of layers in them.

In ArcMap I rename the old layer to _OLD and the new layer to the same name as the old layer. In that situation the data automatically points to the new data on the map. For example if my new feature class has an additional point, line or polygon compared to the old feature class those new elements are reflected on the map. This works perfectly in ArcMap even if the new feature class has additional attributes that were not in the old feature class. I’d do this data update in ArcCatalog with my maps pointing to the data source closed. When I re-open the maps, the new data is represented because ArcMap is still pointing to the “same” data source, even though I’ve actually changed it. It’s just named identically and the attributes ArcMap is looking for in order to symbolize and label the data are the same as before. Additionally, in ArcMap if I had forgotten to change the name of the old feature class it would prompt me with a question mark in the TOC. In ArcMap I could update the data source in the map and assuming the new source had the same attributes for symbology and labels, the feature class would update in my map with all symbology and labels the same as before I had changed the source to the updated data. In Pro this only works when the new feature class has an identical schema as the old. (I cannot add new attributes). I also cannot “update” the source and have the symbology and labeling properties retained. I am forced to re-assign symbology and labeling if my source data changes (Again even if the driving attributes for symbology and labeling haven’t changed). My guess is this is because Catalog and layouts and maps are all “connected” and even if those maps and layouts are not open/active the data driving them is “live” is a sense….. Is there a way to “freeze” the maps and layouts so I can change/update my data sources without affecting them? Then, “thaw/unfreeze” them once I’ve changed updated? I want to be able to close a map or a layout and update a feature class that is symbolized and labeled in the map/layout and when I re-open the map or layout have the new data source represented without having to re-assign my symbology or labels. Right now I can do this I Pro – but only when the feature class attributes are identical. In ArcMap/Catalog I’d do the same thing and add a new attribute to the data and it would still display everything the way I’d set it up before. I don’t want to have to re-assign symbology and labeling each time I update if the source data contains new attributes that don’t impact the rules for symbology and labeling. Hope that helps explain what is happening. Sean

Kory, I’ve had a chance to experiment with this some more. Let me explain what I’m doing and maybe you can offer a better way to accomplish the same thing: I’d like to be able to open catalog view and replace a feature class that a series of layouts or maps use. Typically, I’d rename that feature class featureclass_OLD and the new feature class: featureclass. In ArcMap when I’d do this, assuming my data schema’s were the same when I open a map or a layout my data dynamically updates. In fact, in ArcMap, if I do this and my data schema changes, it still works as long as any attributes driving symbology or labels remain the same. In experimenting in Pro, if the data schema changes at all, even if the attributes driving symbology and or labels remain exactly the same, all of my data disappears from my layouts and maps. I need to re-add it to the layout/map and re-symbolize and re-label. In short, ArcMap was “more forgiving” if attributes changed. I can swap data sources in Pro if they are literally identical in attributes/schema but if I want to add new attributes to a data update (which is common in my workflows), the data disappears. Is there a better way to swap data sources than renaming one to _OLD and naming the updated data the same as the old? I think PRO is technically working, but like I say, it seems to be less forgiving in this particular behavior. I need Pro to behave like ArcMap in this respect. I update data regularly, but frequently require that the data have some different attributes – in other words the table structure will vary. I’m hoping maybe the way I’m trying to update can be improved so I don’t run into this? Thanks Kory, Sean

This would be extremely useful to me. I have several Power Pojnt users that want to be able to update slide which appear as outside elements in my Map layouts. (They are updated regualrly). Right now I'm forced to "take snapshots" by exporting these slides into images and then inserting images. Please add the ability to insert OLE objects into Layouts.

Excellent suggestion. This would replicate behavior in ArcMap.

Thanks Kory, You are right and I have started using the Activate Map button (in fact I added it to the Quick Access Toolbar). I think I’m finding my groove in some workflows. Here is a revision to my original idea: How about when the user reverts back to layout view the element is automatically unselected? OR allow for editing while working in the layout view (My personal preference)? OR allow the user to customize the behavior to their own needs? Thanks for working with me and your examples. I appreciate seeing some of the basics. Seeing how you might edit features helps me know I’m on the right track at moving my work into PRO. The way we use Arc the transition from ArcMap to Pro is significant so I really do appreciate the explanations/examples. Sean

Can you add the functionality to reorder items that we have added to the Quick Access Toolbar? (This is in the product plan to 2.2) EDIT: Can we include the ability to group various QAT items together, (before or after they have been re-ordered)? This would better serve specific workflows. For example you could group together a bunch of "Editing" items into one Quick Access Toolbar group, then another for other similar functions.

Kory, All Editing buttons I add to the quick access toolbar grey-out when I work with the map in Layout View/Mode so adding the clear button there does not help…. Sean

Kory, You are Right! The difference is in ArcMap I’m not switching to a view where I can’t unselect them so it doesn’t “feel” like ArcGIS Pro! But maybe adding the clear button to the quick access bar is a solution. The problem is switching back into that Layout view and then having the clear button disappear…. Thanks for your reply. I’m going to fiddle with adding some buttons to that quick access bar to see if that helps me adapt to the new environment. There is a lot to “grow into”! Thank You, Sean

After editing an element ((Feature class or shapefile or annotation) and double-clicking or pressing F2 to confirm an edit can the element then be "unselected" by default? Right Now, he default is the element remains selected. Inevitably I return to layout view and notice it's still selected, have to re-activate the map, and clear it and then return to the layout. (I know I'll eventually change my behavior....) In ArcMap once you hit F2 or double-clicked your element moved but the selection of the element turns off automatically. You'd need to re-select it to further edit. I looked under the Project Options to see if this was a setting but did not see any options to change this behavior.

I'd like the Labeling Ribbon to automatically activate when I choose Labeling Properties from the Right-Click dialog in the TOC. When labeling I always need both the ribbon and the dialog (right pane) open at the same time so rather than activating both I think activating either should auto-activate the other. Once both are open the user should be able to turn them on and off individually but I'd like the default setting to be both turned on. EDIT: I did try messing around with customizing the Ribbon and I didn't find a way to activate both Labeling interfaces with one click. Thanks Thomas Colson for the suggestion.

I'd like to be able to switch data sources without the data being "lost" in my maps and layouts. For example, if I have a features class driving some data on multiple maps I want to be able to update that data source in my database and then have my maps/layouts that point to that data source dynamically update while keeping my symbology and labels intact. This is how swapping data sources in ArcMap worked (assuming all field names remained the same). Right now in ArcGIS Pro even if all of your fields are the same when you swap data out and open a layout or map the data is rarely "recognized". This requires me to re-import symbology and re-label my features which is not efficient or practical with multiple layouts hitting the same data.

Yeah it would be nice. Like I say what I’ve started doing in my workflows is: 1 – copy the layout I want to manipulate, 2 – rename the layout to something new. 3 – open the new layout, make changes, export/print etc Then repeat the process for each “edit” or new layout. The locking functionality would be better because my workflow is going to create a lot of layouts over time but with some creative and careful file naming conventions, it’s workable for us. Good luck continuing to work out the idiosyncrasies of ArcGIS Pro! Sean Hlousek GIS Manager 1001 17th Street Suite 1250 Denver CO 80203 39°44’56.52” 104°59’36.43” 303-226-9516 (O) 303-565-0224 (M)

There is room for a lot of improvement in the Symbology pane. 1. I'd like the option to be able to view all symbologies alphabetically (as it is now), OR by the Symbol Layer Drawing I have set. In other words I;d like to be able to view the symbology list in the order it is drawn versus alphabetically. 2. In the Symbol Layer Drawing dialog I'd like all values shown versus having to click on each to expose their properties. 3. For maps with MANY symbol values it would be nice to have the option to open and entire screen in order to manipulate and move them around, 4. I'd like all changes I make to the symbology pane (or screen - see suggestion #3), to take effect when I hit an Apply button. This would reduce re-draws.
