Thanks for the reply Johnathon. I’ll try to contact tech support as soon as I can. I have a list of things I need to go over – just need to find time (I’m a one-man shop here ) -Sean

I thought the same thing. It doesn’t solve the “project-bloat” issue but it could be worth a try. If I can make some time this afternoon I’ll give it a try and report back. I posted a separate thread about general slowness and other issues I’ve been observing today too. Thanks, Sean

It would be helpful if Text elements added to a layout be more descriptive than "Text 1, Text 2, Text 3,". I'd like if each element had the first word or two or, if possible, the full text element so for example: My Maps Title is: "Competitor Leases in Permian Basin Area of Interest". Instead of the TOC Text showing "Text 1", It might show "Competitor Leases..." Another Text element in my layout is my company's address. Instead of "Text 2" in the TOC, It Might be "123 5th St..." Another Text element in my maps Layout is "Area of Interest" which is above an inset map. Instead of the TOC Text showing "Text 3", It' Might show, "Area of..." This would make selecting and editing specific text elements more user friendly.

I'm seeing a number of issues after updating to 2.3. At this rate I'm tempted to just have tech support "watch" on a screen share because the list keeps growing. Here is what I've observed this morning: 1. Opening and save times seem to be very slow. I have observed an opening time of over 3 minutes for a project with two simple layouts open. I haven't recorded how long things are taking to save, but its definitely longer than before the update. I have been opening my project frequently - see item #3 below. 2. When I save my project the spinning circle disappears and I don't know when the save is complete. This seems intermittent. The circle appears when I first open a project and save but after that sometimes it disappears and other times it works as it should. 3. Crashes. I have experienced 3 crashes in 2.5 hours of work time. I looked for .dmp reports in the usual place but there are none. 4 Geo-processing. I have only used the Clip tool but it seemed to take quite a while, (several seconds), for the tool to open. ArcMap Clip opens much faster. 5. Legend. When I move the legend on my layout it jumps back to the original location on the first attempt. The second time I move it, it moves correctly

Jason, Were you able to get your prior projects working at reasonable speeds? I am experiencing a noticeable slowdown on all of my existing projects and creating new ones is not ideal. (Although since we cannot lock multiple layouts my projects were all bloating anyway but I don't want multiple bloated projects). It just took a project over 3 minutes to open with two simple layouts open.

Has there been any traction on this? Legend creation is still rather cumbersome. A settings dialog where we could set how legend creation occurs would be extremely helpful. If there are ways to accomplish what I'm looking for can anyone point me to a tutorial or resource?

^ This is what I do. My work-flow for when management wants a new paper map is: Copy the Map template I've built for the appropriate size map (A, C or E), Name the new map. Create a bookmark of the map extent. Copy the map name. Create a new layout appropriate to the requested size (A, C, or E). Open new layout and use Catalog Pane to drag and drop new map into Layout. Zoom to Bookmark created above. Rename Layout the same as the map so I know what layout goes with what map. Edit map and layout as needed. Its a whole lot of copying and pasting and "project bloat". I appreciate the idea of Projects but without the ability to lock layouts like what is suggested here, it's actually more cumbersome than ArcMap - at least for paper map production which sounds like the theme to many of these posts.

Hi Kory, Thank You for the quick response. I was not clear in my post. Let me clarify: What I am looking for is a specific save button to save changes I make in a specific map or layout, independent from the “global” project save You are correct, (and I was not in my original post), that changes are not saved when you do not save a project. What I am looking for is control over specific project elements. So for example, I’d like to be able to open a project and open a layout where I would like changes saved, and a working map where I want to be able to do some work but not save changes. I’d like to be able to save the work I did on my layout, but NOT save the work I do in my working map. At present I am only allowed to save the entire project which means any changes in the working map remain. Sean

Could we get the same type of save functionality as we had in ArcMap with Pro. In ArcMap, I could open an .mxd, make changes to that .mxd, add or remove shapefiles and feature classes and even do analysis, and then quit without saving. When I re-opened the .mxd it was as-if I had never done anything. In PRO when I make any change, that change is "live" in the map - and any associated Layouts, even if I don't save the project. I'd like the ability to save but have that save apply the changes I have made rather than everything being "live". I've worked around this right now using a "Working Map" that is not tied to an layouts but having one working map to answer any question is cumbersome. It was easier with ArcMap to open up a map that was somehow related to the question they might be asking and answer the question with that map, then close it without saving. Maybe there is a setting somewhere to toggle this function? I haven't found it if there is. This functionality would improve my PRO experience a LOT.

Thanks Sarah, Its been about 6 months since I first posted this. One "solution" or maybe its a "work-around" I've learned is to close all layouts and maps before making database changes. This normally maintains my data symbology connection - but it's still not 100% which leads me to believe there is something broken in PRO somewhere related to this. I can't reliable re-create the issue though so I'm just hoping a software updates addresses it in the future. In the mean-time I save a lot of lyrx files! It think part of the issue is the fact that in PRO you can't choose when to save changes to a project. If you make a change in a map for example, that change is "live". You don't have to choose "Save" to "lock-in" your decision to actually apply those changes you've made. There are probably great reasons why ESRI does it this way but as a guy that makes almost all paper maps, I preferred the way it worked in ArcMap where you could open an .mxd, make changes, even do analysis, and then close without saving and the next time you opened the .mxd, none of your work was saved. If you wanted it saved, you had to explicitly save, or "Save-As" and choose a new name. I may post a suggestion to that effect.

Can we have a Save & Close button for Projects in Pro versus having to save, and then having to close? This change would be a helpful for those of us that have to work in several projects at once and then close them at the end of the day.

Paul, I have noticed the same behavior, not only with labels but in fine-tuning the legend. The menus and dialogs are all there but those final “fine-tuning” behaviors seem to take a long time. I don’t know if you experienced the TOC graying out while it “thinks”? I experience graying out irregularly to a point where I can’t reliable replicate it for tech support but it’s happening enough that it is frustrating. I also wish Arc would not redraw layers that I’m not actively working on. For example, if make a change to symbology on Layer A, Layer B should not need to redraw/re-label if I’ve made no changes there. OR, if we make changes to labels, Arc should not need to re-draw symbology – only the labels. There seems to be a lot of re-drawing when it should not be necessary. Sean

When viewing the Catalog View > Layouts. I'd like a column added to the right of the date column (which should be populated by the way). This new column should be "Associated Maps" or something similar. The idea being that within Catalog view I can see which maps are in each of my layouts. Alternatively, this could be a right-click context selection. I'd just like to be able to see which maps I have associated/inserted with each Layout without having to open either. This would make Catalog View more useful.

Good example Kory, How about being able to toggle or set up how you want your Catalog to work? I never preview anything but I'm sure others do. I think Metadata could be it's own window (and I never create metadata and RARELY look at it). Maybe if you want to access Metadata you click on it in the ribbon and that opens a pane/window to work with it? Same with managing styles. (Personally I sort of miss the Style Manager but it was also clunky. I think styles would almost be better handled in an explorer-like interface and like metadata - a pane/window would open when you activate the ribbon for Styles. BTW this might make it easier to add already requested features like adding styles to PRO universally and not just at the project level....) I'm by no means a UI expert but I do use PRO in the way I use it and right now for me, it feels clunky to have a View and a Pane and then have each of them sort of doing some of the things that were all accomplished in Catalog. I love the idea that Catalog is integrated - but Catalog did a lot of things! Some of it is just a matter of learning the new ropes but one specific example I can give you that feels clunky to me is when I want to add a map to a new and empty layout I have to view the Catalog Pane and drag it over. I feel like that should be possible in catalog view as well (Dragging and dropping). If both entities cannot be combined because of the examples you gave or even more examples that folks who are experts in UI design provide - maybe allowing users to do things in BOTH Pane and View (where possible), would be a better UI? Ultimately this idea stemmed from a desire to make this migration into PRO workflows feel more natural to all of the users entrenched in ArcMap and ArcCatalog. Having an integrated Catalog is great, but having Pane and View, each doing some of what Catalog did almost feels like a step side-ways and backwards. (Speaking as a lone user that has sort of jumped into the deep end with Pro )

Right. Bookmarks might help for some work flows but it still requires some manual work for sure.
