I've tried modifying my workflow to prevent this need but haven't had much luck in the process. Its been a while since I tried, I think it has something to do with some settings in SQL Server. What I am doing is updating layers from the county (parcels, addresses, centerlines). I discovered that the fastest and easiest way to avoid any locks was to simply stop services run the updates and then restart them. Running the scripts has been the only reasonable way to get this accomplished. Personally, I think Esri should just have a built in tool that allows you to do this and I wouldn't have this constant problem but I know there is a way to prevent these locks from happening, just haven't been able to figure it all out.

Yes, you are talking about the right toolkit. I'm not horribly well suited when it comes to secure services. I've had some experience but not much. I'll have to ask my IT Manager to assist in those settings. I've seen your other link too, I really don't understand why Esri is so keen on forcing everyone to move to Portal or AGOL. It just doesn't make sense. Not everything we do with services needs to be web based (or cloud based for that matter). I guess it just frustrates me when they want to force you to use their product a certain way when they don't know everyone's processes. Sometimes I think Esri brainwashes their employees too.

In ArcGIS Desktop (ArcCatalog), I was able to run services from the now deprecated Server Admin toolkit. One of the things I used it for was to quickly stop all services, run appropriate tasks and then restart all services. For the most part this process worked really well. I am attempting to migrate to Pro and so I thought I would try my weekly update process using Pro. I run into several kinks, most of which I was able to resolve (Pro points to items a little bit differently). But the task of dealing with the services is not working. It asks for a server name just as it does in ArcCatalog. I imported the task directly but I get an error everytime. My server name is simply gis-server with port 6080. I get a cryptic error message about a syntax error and the general context help that tells you what to enter. I have no idea what variation of a server name I need to use. I know that Pro right now doesn't play well with ArcGIS Services but surely there is a workaround for this?

Man, I was hoping when I clicked on this that there were replies. I am trying to transition to Pro but I'm having trouble wrapping my head around the idea of projects. Right now I have a MAPS folder that I store all my mxd files in. My GIS files are in different folders. Most of the data I regularly work with is actually from an SDE database. Can I continue to organize my maps in Pro the same way? For instance, everything Police Department related is in its own folder, everything Emergency Management related is in its own folder, etc etc.

As Robert said, I'm not sure it is necessarily the complexity of the mapservices but rather the content. The trouble is, I have no idea what content could possibly be the problem. I even republished the potental culprits to no avail. Maybe I'll try again next week.

I simply searched for the tag print widget and none of them were exactly the same issue that I had. I tried png and the other file types. Mine seems to be something about my map services, but I have no idea what might be causing the issue. I even had an inkling maybe it was annotation but the service that is creating the print properly has annotation, so I am still lost. I'll probably have to file a case with support so that they can see all of my settings.

We managed to get this to work on a test app but there seems to be some difficulty using certain webmaps. Perhaps the more complex webmaps with multiple complex operational layers time out. I'm currently trying to use the service asynchronously but it just seems to be running in a loop and never actually creating the image or giving me an error message.

Yes the print server is accessible outside my network. All of my services should be actually and all are on my own server.

My print services are not secured. The web app is using the AGOL type url and my service uses my domain, if that is what you are asking. Both are not secured.

I am attempting to try to use my own template with the print widget. I don't like how the legend works in the default version and it doesn't appear to be configurable. I followed the directions and created a new service and I am trying it out in an app that was built with the out of the box solution. (I have one that uses with the developers solution for custom apps as well). Anyways, everytime I try to run the widget it says Error. Try again. When I tried to check the configuration, the service url box has a warning that says the url is not available. The url I am using is <domain>/arcgis/rest/services/ExportWebMap/GPServer/Export%20Web%20Map which appears to be the correct service url to be put in that box. I saw some other threads that had similar but different issues getting this to work properly. I thought I'd also check my logs and found this entry: Instance of the service 'ExportWebMap.GPServer' crashed. Please see if an error report was generated in 'C:\arcgisserver\logs\GIS-SERVER.CACDOMAIN.LOCAL\errorreports'. To send an error report to Esri, compose an e-mail to ArcGISErrorReport@esri.com and attach the error report file. I will do as suggested and send that email.

Thanks Scott, part of my frustration was the fact that I couldn't find the information you just posted on the website and it appeared to me that the LGIM was going away. I am in an organization where we still host our own data/services and I don't foresee that changing any time soon. I use ArcGIS Online to publish web apps/maps but have chosen not to have a Portal per se. I have tried some of the solutions but have often found that I either don't have enough of the required data to make this work or it just doesn't work with the data I do have. Schema differences can cause a lot of issues and having the Local Government portion of the website used to be very helpful to me. I have found the Esri website to be more and more difficult to use over the past several years. This may simply be due to the overwhelming wealth of information on it but it can be frustrating to not be able to find what you are looking for quickly because it has been moved or the name has been changed. An example of my issue was when I tried to find the Solutions Deployment Tool, a simple search did not yield the results that I was looking for and I had a dig further to find exactly what I needed. Something that Esri could do that would help me, is provide some sort of email blast newsletter that tells of these sorts of changes. I know this probably sounds like whining about change and perhaps it is to an extent but I often feel lost in the sea of Esri customers.

I'd like to know others opinion on Esri's apparent abandonment of the former Local Government Information Model (LGIM). I used this model to update my own feature classes periodically. Now suddenly this Solutions Deployement Tool has taken over. I tried to use this new tool, and of course, it only works using Pro which I can't stand and don't like what I see. I don't want to develop an out of the box solution that Esri thinks will work for every local government everywhere. I want to make sure I have all the new updates to the former LGIM. I'm still not convinced that Pro is an improvement over ArcMap in anyway and I don't appreciate Esri abandoning products simply because it suits them.

If you are building a Google-like basemap, can you share your work? I'm not that fond of Esri's street map and would like to mimic the Google street map since I can't simply use Google basemaps in Esri products.

My Water Distribution crews use Collector extensively in the field. I forget what the unit is called but they have a GPS receiver paired with their tablets/phones. I would think that most phone/tablet GPS units would be sufficient for curb ramps. Unfortunately, our curb ramp project never got off the ground. I believe the City is updating our ADA transition plan so that project may be reborn in the future.

The Identify window can already be docked. You can also control what fields are visible in the layer properties and even highlight special fields of interest.
