Thanks, Tobias, for getting me headed in the right direction. I previously posted on an issue with Block inserts that is directly related to this one: https://community.esri.com/message/445550#445550 "ArcGIS to AutoCAD scaling of Block inserts" By trial and error I found if I set the scale x, scale y and scale z to 0.08333 on my point Insert features in the GIS, they would appear at the same scale as the rest of the dwg drawing. I didn't recognize that 0.08333 is the same as 1/12! So now my question is, how do I change the seed file so that everything comes out right? As mentioned above, I tried changing the units in Format with rather poor results. Other ideas?

Well, I can sort of make things work, but it is far from ideal! In the seed file, the original <Length Type> was set to Architectural and <Insertion scale> was set to inches. If I go to Format>Units, and change the <Length Type> to Decimal or Fractional and the <Insertion scale> to Feet, the resulting dwg correctly displays the value, however without ' or " symbols. If I then change the <Length Type> in the resulting dwg to Architectural, it reverts to using the values as inches and converting them to feet, so back to 6'.

I'm getting a little closer; it has to do with the seed file which contains my Block definitions. When I export without using the seed file, the units are correct (of course the Inserts are worthless since there is no block definition) The seed file was created from the original CAD drawing by deleting everything in the graphics area (i.e., the drawing). There must be some units parameter in the seed file that is causing problems.

Yes! Thanks a lot. That is exactly the problem, because when I convert the more exact measures from my diagram, CAD is exactly converting them as if from inches to feet. I am no CAD guru either. I can barely find my way around to turn layers on and off! I wonder how to get ArcGIS to export with the proper units?

Unfortunately, that is not the problem. The data frame and feature class do have the same coordinate system. Any other ideas?

I'm using ArcMap 10.2.2. I have a line feature class that was originally created from a CAD drawing. When I export this line feature class back to CAD, the .dwg has the wrong length for the lines when looked at in AutoCAD but not when looked at in GIS. I am not sure if there is something in my workflow that is causing this, but here is what I do: The original CAD is brought into ArcMap, georeferenced, and then the spatial reference that I work in is assigned to it. Then I export it to geodatabase feature classes. The line lengths of the original CAD drawing when looked at in AutoCAD are the same as the line lengths when looked at in ArcMAP, and the GISfeature class line lengths are the same as the original CAD drawing. (Everythings good up to this point.) However, when I use the Export to CAD tool, the resulting .dwg has line lengths that are much shorter (a 76' line becomes a 6') when looked at in AutoCAD (when looked at in GIS it is fine). What am I doing wrong, or what should I be doing? Thanks, Cheryl

I need to project a dataset in which feature classes are involved in relationships . I can project the feature classes but when I do the relationships are broken. Is there a way to project a dataset and maintain the relationships?

Andy, I agree with you. Invariably the default is not correct for my work, so I have to add the one I want, then delete the one I don't want . . . and it has to be in that order! I am guessing that they chose to not allow that field to be blank. I would prefer to see it blank, because then I won't accidentally use the improper transformation, and wonder, down the road, why the data doesn't quite line up. Cheryl Trine

Thanks Vince, Asrujit, and Ted, Each of your answers has been helpful to me. Not sure yet which way we'll go, a feature service or a python tool. I'll have to get more information from those who are needing to do this. Personally, I'm leaning in the direction of a Python tool; guess its time to try out pyodbc. Cheryl

Not sure where to post this; can't seem to find an appropriate Place, and I have searched all over trying to find an answer I have an SQL EXPRESS 2012 instance that has been enabled for geodatabases and have 2 geodatabases in it that work fine. In the same instance, I recently added another database (non-spatial) that I created in SQL Server Management Studio for which I have made a Database Connection. I can add a table from this non-spatial database to the map and I can join geodatabase tables to it, but I cannot edit it. Is there something wrong in the way I have set it up, or is this the way things work? If it is non-editable in ArcGIS, what would be the best way to handle the scenario where data from a geodatabase table is needed to up-date the non-spatial database table, and vice versa? (The non-spatial database's primary function has nothing to do with ArcGIS, but I would like to be able to work with one particular table from it.) Cheryl T

Thanks, for the responses. Unfortunately, they didn't solve the problem, but they did point me in a useful direction. That stray "+" sign was the result of my having gone back and forth between using all "+'s" and all "&'s" in the statement. It didn't make any difference. Whether or not Stack Labels was checked or unchecked didn't make any difference, either. As I suspected, there were some settings I did not know about that over-ride anything I do in the expression. 1st, the Label Styles was set to Small Caps (I hadn't realized that was possible--I haven't had a lot of experience with cartography!) 2nd, the map does use the Maplex Labels, so now I have had to dig in to learn what all it does. I started playing with "Stack Labels"; I tried to force a split by inserting a stacking character into the expression, making the maximum number of characters per line too short for everything to fit on one line, and checking "force split"; but none of that was honored. Next I played with "Label Position"; the map came with it set to "Contour", so I went through the various options and found that I could make "Regular" do what I wanted to do, so that's what I'm using. I wish I knew why they used "Contour" when making the TelecomEditing map template; I hope my change doesn't come back to bite me further down the road. It appears to me that "Contour" doesn't honor stacking; is this true, or am I doing something wrong. Also, is it true that you can't use vbScript code such as "vbNewLine" or "vbCrLf" when using the Maplex label engine?

I am using ArcGIS 10.1 I have a several fields and strings I would like to use in a label expression and I would like it to start a newline part way through. I have tried both with vbScript and Python, and when I verify it looks correct, but when I apply it to the map it is all on a single line. Here is my vbScript form: [NAME] & " : " & [NUMBEROFFIBERS] + " Strand" & vbCrLf & [FiberMode] An example of the output is: Cable 43 : 24 STRAND SINGLEMODE I have also tried it using vbNewLine--it doesn't make any difference. I have used the vbCrLf in maps I have created in the past and it has worked fine; this time I am using the ESRI Telecom Editing map template. It looks like the template is using the Maplex labeling engine, but I'm not familiar with that. Could there be some map or label setting that would prevent the use of a new line? I also don't understand why "Strand" is in all caps in the output when that's not the way I put it in the script. Cheryl

As mentioned in my previous post, I am trying to use the Telecom Data Model for a small university campus. The external backbone to our network is in fiber optics with patch panels in each of the buildings. Fibers that enter the building are either patched through the patch panel to a transceiver (which I'm still not sure how to model either) or through the same or another patch panel and out on another cable to another building. I currently have a table which indicates the beginning and ending ports for each patch cable How are patch (jumper) cables modeled, or are they? I suppose I could include them in the Fiber Cable feature class with a Fiber count of 2, but then I have to draw them and the distance they go is at most only a few feet. To me, that doesn't seem like a very good solution. A patch panel could have 100 of these patch cables, and I do not need to know the geographic location of each patch cable, only what patch panels and ports it is attached to on both ends and somehow relate that to the fiber on the other side of the patch panel. If patch cables aren't currently modeled, what would be a good way to do it? Thanks in advance for any assistance, Cheryl

I am attempting to implement the Telecommunications Data Model to document the fiber optics network for a small university campus and have a couple of questions since I don't have a telecommunications background. A lot of our connections are through patch panels. How are input ports and output ports designated? Are input ports the frontside, and output ports the backside? Is it the other way around? Does it matter? Or is it some other arrangement? Most of our fiber optic runs go through a patch panel and are patched to a transceiver. What object in the model does a transceiver correspond to? Thanks, Cheryl
