Yes that was always our rule of thumb too. We had some old sql DBAs that tried to back door GIS and really screwed things up. That was probably 15 years ago and before using sql geometry. I think using sql geometry has really opened the door to opportunities. The reason that we had to do this was because there is such an overhead with ESRI joins using map services and the operations dashboard. We are using the operations dashboard to view electrical outage information coming from our CIS system. There are multiple widgets on our dashboard updating every 2 minutes. When doing the join through esri the update was happening on all 7 widgets every 2 minutes and our sql server (server) was overwhelmed. One good thing I guess is not having to recover this information as it is updated every 2 minutes and the only thing that comes from esri is the shape of the points. Doing the join once on the sql side and writing the data to a feature class has optimized the operation dashboard greatly and reduced overhead. Doing the join with esri was trying to match 12,000 meters in 7 different widgets every 2 minutes and was a huge bottleneck. Hopefully it will continue to run and not cause issues, I can't believe they don't have a sql function that will operate like oracle. We do not have to edit the data so unregistering as versioned removes a lot of the interdependence. I guess if we have to we can try to create the ObjectID using an iterator and a loop, but adds a lot of logic over what we currently have in place.

Hello All I just started looking into this as we are starting to try some new things here using sql server to create new features. We did some experimenting last week and we were able to get something to work. Once I started reading some documentation I am a little concerned that we may get into trouble in the future. What we are doing is creating an inner join in sql using a table and a feature class. We then output the matching records to a non-versioned feature class using the shape from the feature class used in the join. We are using a recid identity field to write into the objectid of the output feature class. What we do is truncate the output feature class before inserting the new records. It has been running every 2 minutes for the last week and seems to be functioning like we want. Everything I read says to not mess with the ObjectID, but the workaround using "next_rowid" seems a little much if we are using an Identity field from another table. Has anyone experienced what may happen when you insert values into an objectid of a non-versioned feature class if it is truncated prior to the insert?

All Looking for some help on guidelines for sizing database server to handle load. We have just configured a completely new server environment and have ran into issues with our database server. I figured this may be our bottleneck, but we have multiple different server sites and have never seen the performance hit that we are seeing on this machine. All of our servers are running on VMWare Server Setup 2 GIS ArcGIS servers 64GB Ram on both 8 Core Processors Windows Server 2012 R2 1 Web Server with Web adaptor for Load balancing 4 Core Machine Windows Server 2012 R2 1 Database Server SQL Server 2014 64GB Ram 4 Core Processors Windows Server 2012 R2 1 Geoevent Server 64 GB Ram 4 Core Processor Windows Server 2012 R2 We were running into resource problems on the old machine, so we built this system to be very robust. The database server is completely dedicated to GIS data and GIS Applications. We are streaming vehicles through the GeoEvent server with 50 vehicles that update a feature service on the Database Server every 2 minutes. Not all vehicles come in at the same time usually it is 6 to 10 vehicles at the same time. We have all the Electric, Water and Communications datasets on the same database server. We had them as dynamic, but changing them to cached did not eliminate much load on the server. We are also updating a table with outage information on the Database Server every 2 minutes. This table is used in a Join only returning matching features in our applications. The server load seems to be from the Real Time data layers: Vehicle Updates Outage Information We have multiple Operations Dashboards setup for our system control center to view real time outage and vehicle locations. We also have some web app builder web applications setup that are viewing this same information. It really seems as though our dedicated database server is inundated easily. We had 10 to 12 users open the Operations dashboards and the server cores were maxed out within seconds of everyone trying to access the information. My question is do we simply need more cores to operate a system like this or does anyone feel that VMWare is not optimized for SQL server. It seems as though the database server is inundated rather quickly. The old Server on one machine sql server 2008 with ArcGIS server and Sql Server on the same machine. We knew that the bottleneck on that server was the RAM as we were limited to 32GB because of windows 2008, but it would start failing after more ArcGIS instances could not spin up and Javew.exe process started storing all the log errors and growing exponentially. This server only had 4 cores and multiple different business system databases on it. At least we were able to view the applications for a while. The only new load is the vehicle locations. Any advise or suggestions would be great.

We have a process that we are trying to work through to update some water scada information. What we are trying to do is update a folder with multiple CSV files that are related to different facility types. In the Input File Filter can you specify a prefix for the txt file to look for. I was thinking I would be able to do a file like Wells20170822.txt and Reservoir2010822.txt. Then I would have an input for each so that it is not trying to grab all txt files that come into the same folder. Am I missing some syntax somewhere. #

Mike Sorry I was not implying that you specifically said this to me, I can't remember who I talked to a couple years ago. They were product engineers for esri though. So can you explain this. ArcGIS Pro can only publish services to ArcGIS online or Portal for ArcGIS on premise. Can Portal for ArcGIS use the same named user accounts as ArcGIS online or do we need to purchase portal named users. It is not advised that you put Portal for ArcGIS on the same server as your ArcGIS server correct? So this means you have to stand up another server. Also, can portal use the same rest endpoint/ web adaptor that our Current ArcGIS server uses? If not we would have to re-route all of our web maps through the new portal correct? Also can you publish dyanamic map services through Portal of ArcGIS or just feature layers?

I do not care for this model at all. What you are doing to users is going to be painful, there needs to be a way to publish to a server directly. If we are forced to stand up a portal internally then that is another server to stand up/maintain and also all of our current web maps are pointed at one web adapter and now we would have to redirect everything through our new portal web adapter. All of our web maps are hosted on ArcGIS online and looking at our ArcGIS server, which is the way to route all content and keep the data completely seamless. I do not want to upload a feature layer to ArcGIS online as that means I would have to update that on a regular basis. If I look directly at my server it sees the update as soon as it is made. I would guess the same is true for portal as I believe it is based on what is available in ArcGIS online. This is going against everything that the server platform was built on and is not going to be better for users. This also goes against everything that was said at conferences a couple of years ago either you use portal or you use ArcGIS online, and most esri representatives were saying that portal is always 2 steps behind ArcGIS online and why would you want to maintain it locally when ArcGIS online is already maintained and up to date first.

We are having issues with the networkfleet connector. We are using the 10.5 connector with Geoevent server 10.5.1. Verizon insists that they are sending all 59 vehicles, but we are only seeing updates on 29 vehicles. I know some other vehicles should have updates, but they are not. I have turned on the debugging and everything shows a success for updates, but I do not see the VIN's for the vehicles that I know should have an update. It is like they are not even getting through. I am writing to just a CSV and i will monitor to see if they are wrote to this file. Not sure how some, but not all vehicles are being updated.

Error All We are currently re-configuring our ArcGIS server site. It has 2 ArcGIS servers in the single default cluster. Our config store and ArcGIS server directories are on a network file share per ArcGIS documentation. What we are seeing is intermittent communication blips between the ArcGIS server machines. The problem is that it is saying Access Denied when it really isn't. Run the same process of restarting a service and it works fine. The other issue is when publishing services if Access is denied to many times it locks out the ArcGIS server account that is running the site as it is a domain account. Has anyone else seen this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is a complete rebuild and we are allocating a lot of resources towards this. ArcGIS server 10.5 and Windows server 2012. Thanks

All This widget is for creating point features at a known XY location. It is extending the smart editor widget so you can select a feature template and enter the XY location of the point. Once you click add location it will create the point at that known location. I have a projection in my updates as some of our submittals are in decimal degrees WGS 84 and some are in State Plane. All of our maps are in Iowa State Plane South so I need to reproject using the WGS 84 output Spatial Reference and use the correct Transformation. If you are going to stay in the basemaps current coordinate system there is no need for a reprojection. If you do need to reproject you will have to update the url to your geometry service and also update all of the WKIDs on line 223,228, and 229 in widget.js. The widget layout looks like the following: Setting up the Widget To install the widget for all web app builder applications you can add the widget to \client\stemapp\widgets folder. It will overwrite the default smart editor widget. If you just want it in an application add it into \server\apps\app#\widgets folder.

I figured out a way to add the feature automatically. Attached is the updated version. You can select your feature template then the Add Location will add the feature at the specified XY. Again this will not work with lines or polygons.

All I have been wanting this functionality as we are having to place section ties and GPS monuments based on published coordinates. I have extended the smart editor widget to place a graphic location then you can use the graphic location to snap your features to that location. It is a 2 step process, but that is all I could come up with at this time. I thought I would share. All of my widget.js changes start with the comment Added MWY then End Added MWY. This is what the widget will look like. It is not the complete solution that you are looking for, but a step in the right direction. Points are easy, line and polygons will work if you create all your snap points first. The zip file below should go in your stemapp folder if you want this functionality on all smart editor widgets, or just put it in the specific app widgets folder.
