Hello Joe, We used to do that sort of configuration back in the old ArcSDE days. With everything now virtual and running on SAN hardware, the idea of tuning to specific table spaces for Oracle's /u01, /u02 and so on has been handed over to those tiers auto-tuning algorithms and SQL Server/ArcSDE defaults. -Bill

Hello Martin, ArcGIS Data Store = Anything new and amazing you want to do in ArcGIS 10.5 I believe it's the (Required ESRI implementation of PostgreSQL) as the required replacement to the traditional ArcGIS geodatabase in SQL or Oracle. I think it is still being tweaked a bit to iron out if all three types of data stores (Relational, Tile Cache and Spatio-temporal Big) are going to use UNC file locations or inside a PostgreSQL "geodatabase". If the two sites are load balanced, maybe just consolidate them into a single virtual server with double the RAM/CPU? Then with printing on-board too, see where performance is at before adding more pieces.

Microsoft calls out some warnings here about installing SQL Server on a domain controller: Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2014 Installing SQL Server on a Domain Controller - Limitations For security reasons, we recommend that you do not install SQL Server 2014 on a domain controller. SQL Server Setup will not block installation on a computer that is a domain controller, but the following limitations apply: You cannot run SQL Server services on a domain controller under a local service account. After SQL Server is installed on a computer, you cannot change the computer from a domain member to a domain controller. You must uninstall SQL Server before you change the host computer to a domain controller. After SQL Server is installed on a computer, you cannot change the computer from a domain controller to a domain member. You must uninstall SQL Server before you change the host computer to a domain member. SQL Server failover cluster instances are not supported where cluster nodes are domain controllers. SQL Server Setup cannot create security groups or provision SQL Server service accounts on a read-only domain controller. In this scenario, Setup will fail.

Hi Amy, If budget allows, first, get SQL Server upgraded above 2008 R2 (and onto its own virtual server) so you can smoothly move into 10.4/10.5 You might be able to use backup/recover ArcGIS Server site config file workflow. A cleaner method would be to install ArcGIS Server 10.3.1 onto the new virtual server, then just add it to your default ArcGIS Server site cluster. Then you can move the config store to the new server and trash the old physical ArcGIS Server. By that time 10.5.1 will be your target update. -Bill

Further ArcGIS Enterprise 10.5 Testing: Created a couple ArcGIS Server folders to hold map services for Production and Test Web AppBuilder applications. We can successfully publish an mxd into both folders (AND) use the same map service name such as LandDivisions. We just have to publish them one at a time so we can use Portal My Content's root folder to move the portal items that are simultaneously created while publishing (Federated) into corresponding Portal for ArcGIS My Content folders (Production & Test). Then in Portal's My Content folder of Test, added one of the portal items to a new webmap fine. But when we use the add button to bring in a second map service/portal item such as LandDivisions, Portal lists both items of LandDivisions - you can't tell which one is from which portal content folder just by looking at the list. Fortunately, we can click on an item in that list and click "Item Details" and it's Overview page includes which Portal folder it's coming from. With some trial and error testing we created some additional geodatabase users and roles to focus on schema specific privileges. This allows us to focus web publisher one on a certain schema, such as ALPHA, of feature classes and NOT see a feature class of the same name in schema BETA. Web publisher two can only see the BETA owned feature classes. This provides a workaround to push on into 10.5.
