This is incredibly helpful! I'm not up to speed when it comes to TLS or network side- security operations, so this became a great way to validate some of my other testing. Between this article and the TLS basemap test services found from this link ESRI has created for us. How To: Test ArcGIS TLS 1.2 connections to ArcGIS Online I have been able to validate that my custom application is compliant when working with ESRI basemaps.

Well then, looks like I need to investigate making that change. For whatever reason when this machine was built it was not setup for windows managed. derp. Thanks for your valued insight. I appreciate your time greatly.

Randall Williams - Old thread being revived here but I was hoping to see if I could quickly gain insight into the Virtual Memory and Paging options you asked about here. Is there a preference for the GIS Server to have Windows managed Virtual Memory and Paging or to set values? We are seeing some bad performance on a new VM with a new installation of Enterprise 10.6.1 - specifically, service going unresponsive, failing to draw (or print) and then seeing all the services in Server Manager in the "stopping" mode. Restarting the Server Service will resolve our issue. When we start publishing additional services we start to see this behavior start to act up. The CPU seems to run nice and low (below 30%) and the Memory use is only around 50% at most. Seems as though there is enough resources for the box so I'm wondering about Virtual Memory and Paging allotments. Any insight or links you can point me towards.

My apologies for missing this. Short answer is no. I've been relying on ESRI support for GIS side and MS support for Azure side. The vendor who has helped us to this point has washed their hands of this project and considered it closed so I need to pay more to get their help. ack. Other than that, I just lean on geonet and the fellow nerds our there making maps. Sorry I can't be more helpful. It's been quite the learning curve for me, to be honest. I would recommend that you have someone on board that can at least navigate Azure for you. Talk about an endless pit of options.

Hi folks - I'm hoping someone can help me understand what I am seeing and maybe a fix? Background: Our Microsoft partner was hired to stand up our Enterprise 10.6.1 deployment in Azure. During the initial phase of the project our vendor initially setup our Azure and Enterprise deployment with two machines. Server1 and Server2. He has used Cloud Builder to stand this up. After the fact he had realized we only wanted a single machine deployment and he removed Server2. Build went on with a few other hitches but we are now in Production. I'm working on housekeeping items and troubleshooting an issue with print service, so I can run a script to create a clone for a test/dev setup. During troubleshooting (which I fixed by killing a handful of services) I noticed in the Resource Monitor network traffic on the server I am seeing an item for an ArcSOC.exe but with an address of Server2 ?! When ever a service is called from Server1 map service, additional request are headed to Server2, which doesn't exist. Is there a configuration within the pieces of Enterprise that may still have this Server2 ref? and more importantly, can I remove it? I'm wondering if I can get better performance from this environment if I get this Ghost Server out of the mix. Thanks

I did not create the views and they were created via SSMS, so not automatically registered it would seem. These were created by developer who is no longer with us and I'm sure he did not go into the world of GIS and register them. Well as sure as I can get since he was terrified of the idea of needing to use ESRI tools when he was helping me. haha. I've looked at these links (THANK YOU!) and looked back at the views via Catalog. The option to Register is still clickable, so I'm going to go ahead and assume they are in fact not registered. I will try to verify on an old Test/Dev setup if I can get some time to bring it back to life. Otherwise, it sounds like renaming temporarily will not corrupt and I can end up with the same old name and full functionality. Yeah? fingers crossed

Good day. Thanks for your response. I'm going to have to show my lack of db understanding, though. Well, they might be registered with the Geodatabase? Other than just being in my db under the views section in SSMS,is there another way I can tell if they are "registered"? I have a feeling this route is not going to work for me either.

Don't mind me jumping in mid thread here. I am trying to understand if I can Restore a backup enterprise gdb with a new name to the same instance Work on the gdb via SSMS tools. Mainly removing views and linked server backup e gdb with new name / Remove existing e gdb Restore e gdb with original name Connect Is there something when changing the name temporarily that will corrupt my egdb or is it just connecting via Arc with new name that doesn't work? I need to do some basic db operations outside of Arc. Any idea if the concept of having a temp name , workign within SQL will work in this scenario?

Yes, this is incredibly helpful. Thanks to all who are participating in this thread. I will add to this as we go forward with Paas testing. As it stands we have just stood up and pushed to Production our Enterprise 10.6.1 which is hosted on Azure. Due to the inability to use linked servers with the PaaS model for Azure SQL we had to move forward with the IaaS model using a VM in Azure to host our SQL server. Salesforce is replicating to an OnPrem SQL Server so we can query those tables and views into GIS eGDB. Not ideal but it works. Now I am working on building our Azure hosted SQL (PaaS) using Logic apps to move data from our Salesforce instance to the Azure Hosted SQL directly, no more need for linked server. I'm not too thrilled about what the outcome is going to be based on this thread and others I have read including ESRI documentation itself. I'm hoping my very small GIS user base will be ok using services to edit eGDB data. Otherwise all our users are access our data via map services in custom apps or Portal. But, hey at least I have a working setup now which buys me a bit more time to try and make this work.

Anyone following or involved in this thread, I am happy to report a solution. In the end it was not related to SSL settings and Jonathan is correct with the explanation of self signed ok in this configuration. I'm not sure it's logged as an official bug, but I can sure as heck tell you that this is not behavior I woudl expect. My 10.6.1 print service was being denied access to the map service because of the Definition Query that we are including in our print request. Really simply, this definition query is restricting any features who's ID are not in the single ID query. This ends up being a single point and a few radius rings in my scenario. Once we were able to pull the print code apart enough to find the query was failing. I sent this and the print web map documentation to support. They almost instantly responded with the solution. "Does this map service contain dynamic layers? To check, look in ArcGIS Server Manager and go to the Map Service > Capabilities under Dynamic Workspaces and see if the checkbox next to "Allow per request modification of layer order and symbology" is selected. Unless you are using this ability, this should not be checked. Server Manager may require a restart for this change to take effect." My answer was no, there are no dynamic layers. So I unchecked this box and VIOLA! it works. amazing. So default check box on position at 10.6.1 will not play nice with definition query in the print request. At 10.3.1 it was fine. Further digging with ESRI relieved "This is kind of an odd bug/resurface and initially started in 10.2 and reoccurred in 10.5. It seems to be pretty complex and I am not 100% positive of why enabling/disabling dynamic layers would interfere with layerDefinitions especially since Dynamic layers only increase the amount of interaction that users are able to have with the maps." Hope this helps someone out there, I lost almost 3 weeks working on this a few hours a day.

Correct, I can reach all the services from my desktop and other machines within the network. My WAB app is able to print just fine. No, my services are not public, they should only be reachable by users with Active Directory user creds. I'd be willing to make one public if someone is able to help me troubleshoot....? I know a long shot. Anyways, Its so strange to me! Everything seems to have access to the map services except for the GP tool. But only when the json is produced by the my application. When the json is prodcued form another applicaiton like a WAB template there are no issues. --> which by this point all signs are pointing to the app itself. I'm not a developer by any means so this is a major issue for me. This is literally the last piece of the puzzle before we move Enterprise into Production. Damn. I guess a good way to look at it is that it's a super simple custom print service. We are filling in text elements and putting definition query on two layers. Everything else gets printed into the template and viola! but only with 10.3.1 I guess. What's changed? New Server Machine, New AGS version, Portal (with Portal Security). I guess I'll just keep pushing buttons until something works. Has to be within one of these arenas I would think? Seems simple enough: why can't GP service access map service. Well then. I guess we can cross off SSL getting into the way. ok, check that off the list. And moving on, I guess we can count out a failure from the Server/Print GP service as well. Thank you for your insights Jonathan and Bill.

Oh, that's great suggestion. SO, I've captured the webmap_as_json string from my browser when I request a print from my application. I have then accessed the service and added that json from my machine via REST, from Arcmap/catalog 10.3.1 on my machine by navi to the service and launching>add json>run GP, from a desktop VM in Azure (Server VM is also in Azure GIS) arcmap/catalog 10.6.1 by navi to service>launch GP tool >add json>run tool. Same result all three times, which matches the app results. Proper template, extent, basemap. No Map Service data.

Hi Bill! Right, so: I can print using default service from web app template (WAB) using my map service. I can print using print service from web app template (WAB) using my map services, and I'm even getting my template options from the print widget. I am using a secured print service using credentials for an Admin Portal user. Is there something with my web application which needs additional Portal login credentials or is this tied up in IIS as app pool identities etc? I'm just not seeing where I can configure the print service to have access to map service when originating from my web application.

hoping to breathe some life into this. Still no fix. Have yet another ticket in with support (enterprise team) to see how we get this working. Anyone know how the javascript api version interacts with Portal/SSL/Security/IIS? Doing more troubleshooting I looked to see this application is built on v 3.16. I'm seeing we are now at v4 (4.9) and I'm wondering if this plays into the mix?

Bill - Thanks for the link. We have done all of the steps listed. Big Caveat though... we used a vendor to help us since we moved to Azure while upgrading to Enterprise 10.6.1. Therefore I did not personally install the cert on the GIS server. I'm wondering if this was done....Also, what TLS issues are you referring to? but I now see the next post by Jonathan..... ESRI, help! Thank you Jonathan, that is a piece of news I was not expecting with SSL and Enterprise. interesting... My issue seems very straightforward, of course if it was I wouldn't be here! I'm so stuck and don't really know where to turn. This works fine at 10.3.1 ::::: When we print a map from our web application we are getting a result which does not contain our own map service features. The print service will function properly in that it is picking the proper template provided during publishing, it will display the correct extent and it will include the ESRI basemap service that is part of the web application. Everything but our own service. The AGS logs are showing an error which seems to line up with how many visible layers should be included from our map service, see screen shot. I've worked with tech support to verify the GP service works by adding the service as the print service in an AGOL web app using our own map service. Works fine. What am I missing trying to do this from my custom app?
