Ahhhhhh... Thank you sir. Robert Scheitlin, GISP, quick question. You seem to have a STRONG grasp of Dojo and the Javascript API. I'm betting you have a programming background. Is there any chance you would consider doing some YouTube video tutorials on Dojo / ArcGIS Javascript API? I would welcome a Hello World Widget video from you and easily subscribe to a YouTube service where you taught this stuff. I've tried (briefly) to wrap my head around Dojo, but work doesn't give me the kind of time I need to REALLY grasp it. So I 'kinda' understand it and I can edit stuff as needed... but the module loading process has me lost and I feel if I could grasp it, then I could really unlock some power with these JS web maps. Any chance?

Quick question for... um... everyone? (I guess) Why am I suddenly having my posts to my own thread moderated? I just tried to post a reponse to something I read and it popped up and said "Awaiting Moderator approval." Then shortly thereafter I got a response that my post had been approved?!?!? What the heck?!

I don't think I could bring myself to do that. The ADA compliancy stuff I've had to deal with in my past makes iFrames give me hives... lol.Luckily, WAB_B3 takes care of this issue. My map is running nicely. I've actually developed a couple maps using WAB now. One is still in my dev folder... http://maps.cityoftulsa.org/jsdev/mywatershed/ And the other is in flux... http://maps.cityoftulsa.org/iot/ Either way, I REALLY like how simply they both are put together. This kind of JS dev application will give me MUCH more time to devote to learn the Javascript API more intimately so I can start doing some development on custom widgets and such.

Does anyone know if Portal 10.3 will be able to be the ONLY 10.3 version ESRI software or do we have to update our ArcGIS Servers and Desktops to 10.3 to work with it? Because we aren't upgrading again for a couple years probably. This last upgrade to 10.2.2 marked the first time that the City had everyone using the same version and connected to a single license server. We don't WANT to upgrade again. Too much fricking work. We've been DYING to get LGDM fleshed out and more in populated as well as convert our Flex maps over to a JS version. And I'm itching to get some time to start working on custom widgets for JS. I just saw that they have a JQuery widget option that I am DYING to try my hand at in development. I'm REALLY hoping we can install 10.3 Portal on top of 10.2.2 everything else.

Probably a stupid question... BUT... I'm gonna ask it anyway. As the average web-map is just HTML/Javascript it makes me wonder. Would it be possible to embed one of these web maps using the Javascript API from ESRI inside of a PDF? I know there are 'Office Tools' from ESRI that let you do similar... but, what about PDF? I am thinking that these Storymaps would be MUCH more amazing inside of a PDF. Just a quick (probably stupid) question.

I feel like ESRI should put together some graphical lexicon for these things. lol But yeah, what Robert Scheitlin, GISP said...

On a side-note. I was 'playing' around with a proof-of-concept map. A 'ParksFinder' editor. And I got it working with WAB + AGOO/AGO. So basically, I can (hopefully) begin creating maps for these departments and then dev them an editor map so they can manage their own data. I don't want to be the Parks, Streets, Stormwater, etc. GIS guy. I want to develop tools that these departments can use to manage their OWN data. So I now have a ParksFinder editor so that the Parks department can update their own parks data. Next comes a MyWatershed editor so that Streets and Stormwater can manage their own Watershed data. THAT almost feels like a vacation...

lol... yeah. I can't even begin to explain how right you are. UGH! But yeah, if you are running Flex then you aren't doing JS/HTML5. At one point I was dedicated to re-learning Flex. I had developed in it several years ago (mainly for entertainment projects) but had fallen so out of touch with it that it felt like learning it for the first time when I tried to pick it back up. Needless to say, we are in full-on JS mode. It's the non-compiling, mobile-ready, -ness of it all that really is powering our shift away from Flex and Into Javascript. Being able to open text editor and customize all aspects of the map and it's widgets in minutes makes Javascript a choice I can agree with. I'm pushing Portal on my GIS group (me, my GIS Lead, and the GIS DBA). I can't believe it's more integrated with ArcGIS Server!? I mean, if we spend THOUSANDS of dollars on setting up our own servers, building our own enterprise GIS databases, maintaining all of it, building our own web maps, and then we have to re-direct through ArcGIS online?!?!?!? No thanks. I'm going with Portal (and whatever headaches that I believe will come with it) and I don't plan on looking back.

But don't get me wrong. I've been harping at work for months now saying I needed time to develop a javascript library for building web maps because all of the ArcGIS Javascript API examples were one-shot wonders and no, I can't just add more buttons to one of those maps and have it be what you are requesting. The WAB fulfills a MUCH needed slot. I can dev a whole map there, then adjust the code as needed. It's just those updates that are killing me.

I also think that WAB should have more custom config points. If I want the legend to sit in the top right of my map, in a floating pop-up, with an image as the background, and have a height of X and a width of Y, I should be able to manipulate all of that from the builder. Not in code that will get overwritten at the first update to my app. That and favicon. I have had to re-code the stupid favicon (and custom CSS for customer legend sizing) for this map I developed in WAB 6 times. Ugh X 6.

I would like that. I gotta throw in, I am more coder than GIS. My GIS experience comes from working in a department that talked GIS but acted CAD. I was thrown at GeoMedia for a few years and by learning my way around the interface I was able to suss out basic GIS concepts. Personal research brought me closer to the stronger knowledge I have now, that and some amazing Gurus who answered any question I had. I had some ESRI from back in the early 90's from the Marines, but it was for my Field Artillery Fire Controllman training and was mainly for locating things on a map and some survey classes. Currently I have access to someone who I consider to be a definitive answer for all things GIS. I'm trying to be the GIS Programmer guy as I manage our web maps and tech-type work. So I am in-between both worlds kinda, lol. I love both GIS and programming. Especially web programming. But I have little, to no, official training. So I have a weak foundation but strong experiential knowledge of web dev. I can take apart code and re-write a lot... but writing from scratch in Javascript gives me hives. I have tried to dig into Dojo but keep hitting dead-ends in my learning. So I'm hanging on waiting for someone to put together a decent (free) online Dojo course that I can watch. ANYWAY... Portal is my current dream. If I never have to sign on to my AGOO/AGO platform again it will be too soon. I would rather see that kind of functionality locally on our clustered servers. Being able to develop a web map in the AGOO/AGO styled system and deploy FROM that system is where I am dreaming towards. That and WAB Widget dev. Well, before this becomes a novel. Peace.

Robert, I know that we want a 'Point-and-Polygon' widget. Where the user enters an address in a specific field and it 'not only' drops a dot on the map for that address, but it activates either a 'Meta-Popup' or even just a targeted pop-up. For instance, if I create a council district map with nothing but council districts on it, I would like to add the 'point-and-polygon' widget to the map. I configure the widget to target the council district feature class, maybe configure a meta-popup in the widget settings. User opens the map. Enters their address in the widget provided field. A dot gets dropped on the map AND the pop-up displays automatically. No extra clicks by the user. If all it did was trigger the pop-up for a targeted layer(s) that would be just fine.

Glen, That is the direction we are planning on. My biggest problem is time. In order to implement the level of security that we want AND need, I have to get with the AD people and find out a group that basically IS all City Employees. I literally do not have the time to just find out who the AD people are much less contact them and ask about these groups. I am being given "this important department needs this" or "this important person has to have one of these" types of projects on an almost hourly basis. I don't have time to do the simple and vitally important things like build a foundation. I should be cloistered in a room delving into Dojo so that I can start coding customer widgets, tightening up the few javascript maps we do have, developing replacements for the now outdated flex maps that are still staring at me daily. Instead, I just spent a week getting WAB installed so I could dev a map for our Streets Projects under one of our Tax programs. And now I am a week late to a Story map for our Planning department. I want to be doing what Robert Scheitlin is doing and learning the API intimately and custom coding components to make maps that are amazing... not just requested. Sorry, mini-rant there. Glen, yes. Our goal is to use AD authentication to power our security on WebAdaptor. I was HOPING that Portal would add another layer to this security. I still haven't had time to dig through all the documentation for Portal that I need to yet. But I hope to.

I am wondering if anyone has (or would make) a video tutorial that shows how to create a 'Hello World' widget for WAB (B3). I have tried to wrap my head around Dojo but can't find any tutorials that walk through their library simply or step-by-step. A video tutorial that covered a simple Hello World Widget tutorial would be perfect... anyone?
