I am working with Complete_Street Rule for a model I am building, and I was wondering how to create a ramp-like shape for a raised intersection. (This street will intersect Pedestrian walkways with a raised brick intersection that cars can cross if need be. When street meets intersection, there is a small concrete ramp that rises from street level to intersection level. I tried to use the "envelope" command in the rule file to raise the "Crosswalk" rule as the ramp, but that only works for one side of the intersection while the other three all taper the same way (not towards the intersection). Any idea how to tell each crosswalk (all 4 incoming street segments) to taper towards the intersection? David Wasserman

Here is a model from Austria (has some hills). This one is cool because it models trees in non-urban area, shows wind-power effects, and has an address locator. http://nashville.maps.arcgis.com/apps/CEWebViewer/viewer.html?3dWebScene=c8f8237b639f4a4b8d7deab6345b8424 Cape Town - Really cool use of cameras. http://nashville.maps.arcgis.com/apps/CEWebViewer/viewer.html?3dWebScene=089d6d98d0ce45dbbfd241646be4ce27 Desert - Awesome panorama. http://nashville.maps.arcgis.com/apps/CEWebViewer/viewer.html?3dWebScene=5aee281aefcb485a9e197af852b781d5 Sub Terrainian Modeling! (I expect more of this to be done with 3D in the future.) http://nashville.maps.arcgis.com/apps/CEWebViewer/viewer.html?3dWebScene=c123dee5ddd04a61ab08f8c988b0f505 Here are a few more. Yes, I agree that City Engine is more of a planning tool to show 3D visualizations. But if you need "fast" models that you could pair with other platforms to do your analysis, it is very cool. Also check out ArcPro..(it seems to be merging the analysis and modeling into one package, which is really useful).

I have often thought 3D GIS as a use in defense planning. I think as 3D and GIS technologies continue to advance that more options will become available. Here a couple of 3D things that might give you an idea of a scenario where you would use 3D modeling in GIS. http://nashville.maps.arcgis.com/apps/CEWebViewer/viewer.html?3dWebScene=16ab93ddf4f647709040df70ce4f70d4 http://nashville.maps.arcgis.com/apps/CEWebViewer/viewer.html?3dWebScene=3c60e6459ffc4890a3c47d54b96fb2c0 Maybe having a model of troop placement in an urban combat zone would be useful....and use the CGA rules to generate different percentages of coverage for certain sidewalks or sides of the building. (Kind of like tree percentages are used now on street and green space rules, but it would be model soldiers with Entrance and Exit strategies). You could then have the model report on the number of troops in each element; or maybe the distance of a sidewalk from soldier to entrance point of a building with the reporting option...or roof placement....or security camera coverage area (think transparent covered domes representing camera viewshed) Another use would be post-combat investigations. Build a model of a scene to show different "possibilities" of how a situation went down....like in the JFK scene above. I have also seen some cases where a CityEngine Scene had indoor modeling of buildings. Which could prove useful for defense as well. It would be handy to move about the scene with a remote like the Occulus Xbox remote thing that Esri has at the UC. I'm not sure, but it may even be possible to move CityEngine models/scenes to other 3D softwares that allow you to set up gaming rules (such as Unity). This would open up new possibilities to Defense maybe?? Good luck! Very interested to see what other people suggest.

That will be cool. I think the ability to put 3D and 2D objects into ArcGIS web applications is coming soon. I really like the story maps as well. I want to be able to use my GIS data and 3D objects in those.

No solution yet...at least for this method. It is my understanding that the Arc 10.3 release has the ability to upload multipatches to web scenes???? I still have 10.2. and so wanted to use my CityEngine web scene in the Story Map Journal instead of the ArcGIS online web scene. I replaced the URL to a ArcOnline web scene with a URL to my CE web scene in the Story Map Journal Builder . The CE web viewer shows up fine with the Story Banner in the correct place...but it has the layer window, the blue header, info, comments, and all that extra stuff....I wanted to use just the view window. The story journal was/is going to be a tour of biking trails in the Middle Tennessee area (a lot of which are off-road trails that are not represented well on our other maps and sites). I wanted it to be completely 3D in that model trail marker, trees, bikers, buildings, water shader, streets, parks, etc....were all 3D. The journal banner would include videos of off road bikers on a certain trail, or images and info about the bikeway, park, or whatever the case may be.

Also, be sure your facade pictures (jpg, png, etc..) are saved in your assets folder.

Ok...I think I understand. You want to select facades for different faces of a single model (such as walls). You would need to separate the walls in the code into individual components...and then write a rule for each one....for example.... attr HEIGHT = 10 attr texturesFront = fileRandom("assets/Brick_Red_Wall.jpg") attr texturesRight = fileRandom("assets/Brick_Red_Wall.jpg") attr texturesLeft = fileRandom("assets/Brick_Red_Wall.jpg") attr texturesBack = fileRandom("assets/Brick_Red_Wall.jpg") @StartRule Lot --> extrude(HEIGHT)Bldg Bldg --> comp(f){front : FacadeFront | right : FacadeRight | left : FacadeLeft | back : FacadeBack | top : Roof } FacadeFront --> setupProjection(0, scope.xy,'1,'1) texture(texturesFront) projectUV(0) FacadeRight --> setupProjection(0, scope.xy,'1,'1) texture(texturesRight) projectUV(0) FacadeLeft --> setupProjection(0, scope.xy,'1,'1) texture(texturesLeft) projectUV(0) FacadeBack --> setupProjection(0, scope.xy,'1,'1) texture(texturesBack) projectUV(0) Roof --> roofGable(45,0,0,false,0) However, this may be a bad way to do it if you do not have exactly 4 walls. I would suggest clicking on your "Help" option and search for the "Comp Split Operation". It will give you an idea of how the rule file identifies a single face. But again, there are lots of rules online (mostly inside of tutorial downloads) that work great and can be modified to do what you need.

Here is a link to tutorials that have a lot of building rules with the download; you can modify these to use your textures. CityEngine Gallery | ArcGIS Resource Center You can use the file path of the textures in those rules (usually in "assets/textureName.jpg") and just add your own textures into the assets folder....("assets/YOURtextureName.jpg"). A simple way to select your own texture in the inspector window (with a browse button) is to make an attribute for your texture in the rule file. for example.... attr HEIGHT = 10 attr Mytextures = fileRandom("assets/Brick_Red_Wall.jpg") #THIS MAKES TEXTURE SELECTABLE!! @StartRule Lot --> extrude(HEIGHT)MakeBuilding MakeBuilding --> comp(f){side : Facade | top : Roof } Facade --> setupProjection(0, scope.xy,'1,'1) texture(Mytextures) projectUV(0) Roof --> roofGable(45,0,0,false,0) This will allow you to select a building in the scene...and choose its texture from the inspector window. Good luck!

I have had this problem in the past. I found that if I loaded the terrain data first, ...and secondly drag and drop the OSM download into the scene that it worked. Good luck.

Is there a way to remove the top header (the blue area ...title, layer&settings options, name, etc) from the CityEngine Viwer? I know with a Web Scene, you can simply add the HTML code "&ui=min" to the end of the URL.....but this does not work in City Engine Viewer. Ultimately, I want to include this scene in a Story Journal, but without the header.

Ok, I have brought in a new lamp object that I created in Sketchup (Obj). The Complete Streets rule successfully puts the lamps on the sidewalks, but the textures don't show up. They do show up in the preview window, but not on the actual model in the scene. Is their something in the rule I need to adjust to get the textures?
