I'm trying to sort out the relationships among accounts, subscriptions, and organizations in My Esri, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGIS for Developers. I haven't seen a comprehensive and succinct document from Esri, so hopefully someone here can help me out. Here's what I've got: An Esri Global Account is associated with one email address. An Esri Global Account may be associated with a My Esri Organization. An Esri Global Account may be associated with one ArcGIS Online Organization. A My Esri Organization and an ArcGIS Online Organization are different, unrelated things. Not sure how ArcGIS Developer subscriptions fit in. Can anyone add to this?

Hi Tina. A quick follow-on question: a user with ArcGIS Desktop 10.5.1 can connect to an enterprise geodatabase (10.1 through 10.2.2) using the ArcSDE application server. However, I'm assuming that a user can't create an enterprise geodatabase using the ArcSDE application server (since the client creates a geodatabase schema current with its own release). Is that correct?

OK, here's what I've got. I replaced the point: ArcSDE geodatabase: an enterprise geodatabase (version 10.1 or 10.2.x) to which connections are made via the ArcSDE application server. with the paragraph At ArcGIS 10.5.1, there are two ways to connect to enterprise geodatabases: for all supported enterprise geodatabase releases (10.1 through 10.5.1), an ArcGIS client can connect to the geodatabase via "direct connect" (this is Esri's recommended method); for enterprise geodatabase releases (10.1 through 10.2.x), an ArcGIS client can also connect to the geodatabase via the ArcSDE application server.

Note: I had mostly written this response by the time you posted your next response, so this might seem a bit out of sync. This goes back to why I wrote the blog post in the first place. When you start throwing file extensions at users, and adding in a matrix of types vs. licenses, and name both an "enterprise geodatabase" and an "enterprise license", it's no wonder that users get confused. The communication isn't clear, it's often inconsistent, and it often contradicts itself. First, I think it's important to be able to communicate the functionality of a geodatabase without having to identify its file extension, especially when the file extension is ".sde". Like I stated in the blog post, I've started using the term ArcSDE only in reference to the ArcSDE application server, and I think it helps to create clarity. When you communicate with users using the file extension ".sde" (and I understand the historical and technical reasons for this), it equates "enterprise geodatabase" and "ArcSDE" in the user's mind. (You mentioned in your previous comment that a .gds file could be renamed to .sde -- interesting, I wasn't aware of that). Second, on enterprise geodatabase licensing, what you've communicated here is inconsistent with the ArcGIS documentation, which identifies desktop and workgroup geodatabases as distinct from enterprise geodatabases: Geodatabase administration terminology—Help | ArcGIS Desktop Database server vocabulary—Help | ArcGIS Desktop From a user's perspective, these are different animals, because they're licensed differently and work differently in terms of simultaneous numbers of connections and concurrent editors (and, yes, I understand that you can take the same .mdf and .ldf files and move among the different "types" by licensing them differently). I think that the definitions that Esri provides in the above links are helpful, but are inconsistent with how Esri communicates about geodatabases elsewhere. Finally, I think that your final sentence would be better written as "ArcGIS Desktop 10.5.1 can connect to enterprise geodatabases (versions 10.1 through 10.2.2) via the ArcSDE application server" -- again, more consistently using the terms "enterprise geodatabase" and "ArcSDE application server". I'm not trying to be pedantic about this, but I have found that out here in the field, Esri's inconsistent communication on how users create, license, connect to, and use geodatabases causes a lot of confusion, which is what I'm trying to address in the blog post. As I indicated in my reply to Asrujit, I'll update my blog post to remove the term "ArcSDE geodatabase", and instead expand the discussion of the different methods of connecting to enterprise geodatabases.

Perhaps the nomenclature that I've used is different from what others use. What I'm trying to present here are options that users have for creating and working with geodatabases. You're correct that they're both enterprise geodatabases (you'll note that I've used the term "enterprise geodatabase" in both cases), but the ways in which users create, license, and connect to them are different. From a user's perspective, they're different animals. The larger issue is that people (even Esri employees), often refer to both of these as ArcSDE geodatabases, which creates confusion. What I'm trying to communicate here is that the term "ArcSDE" should only be used in reference to the ArcSDE application server, and shouldn't be used to refer to enterprise geodatabases. Maybe what that means is that I should remove the "ArcSDE geodatabase" type, and reference the discussion that follows on how to connect to enterprise geodatabases.

Thanks, Tina. Good catch -- I've updated the post to indicate that you can only connect to a 10.1 or 10.2.x enterprise geodatabase using the ArcSDE application server from ArcGIS 10.5.1.

How does Esri define and differentiate "workgroup geodatabases" and "desktop geodatabases". The table of client and geodatabase compatibility identifies "Enterprise, workgroup, or desktop geodatabase" as distinct geodatabase types. In the same help section, enterprise geodatabases are described, but the terms "workgroup geodatabase" and "desktop geodatabase" are not defined. Searching the help for the term "workgroup geodatabase" leads to this topic, which discusses creating desktop or workgroup geodatabases, but doesn't distinguish between them. Further complicating this is the use of the term ArcSDE, which has not existed as a product since the 10.2.2 release. So, what are the definitions of "desktop geodatabase" and "workgroup geodatabase"? Would it be possible for Esri to provide a cleaned up, concise definition of the various geodatabase types, using consistent terminology?

I have an Esri Global Account. This one, in fact. I've had it since 2010. It encompasses my entire relationship with Esri since starting SpatialBridge. During that time, I've had subscriptions to the Esri Developer Network, and SpatialBridge has been a member of the Esri Partner Network. Fast forward to 2017. Due to lack of need, I allowed my EDN subscription to lapse and, in the interim, Esri replaced the EDN program with ArcGIS for Developers. OK, cool. I now have a need again, so I went to sign up. I go to developers.arcgis.com, and click Sign Up for Free. Then I click on the Sign in link for those who already have an account. I enter my Esri Global Account credentials, and I'm logged in. The banner at the top says that my account is suspended (as expected, on account of I let my subscription lapse), so I click on the link to Upgrade or check your subscription. Somehow that lands me on the ArcGIS Online Organization tab (side note: at the time that SpatialBridge joined the EPN, somehow my personal Esri Global Account was converted to an Organization account?). Anyway, no worries; there's a big button right there under the Subscription Status tab that says RENEW. Maybe I'll click that. Up pops a dialog that tells me to contact Esri. OK. First, I'll try something else. So, I go back to developers.arcgis.com, and click Sign Up for Free again. This time, I enter my name and email address and click Send Confirmation Email. A few minutes later, I get the confirmation email and I click the link in it. I land on a page to create a new ArcGIS Developer account, which I believe is also creating a new Esri Global Account. So I contact Esri (Canada) Customer Service, and let them know what I'm trying to do: use my existing Esri Global Account, and add an ArcGIS Developer subscription to it. Easy peasy, right? Nope. I need to create a new Esri Global Account to get an ArcGIS Developer subscription. Oh, and one other thing. I need a new email address to do it. A. New. Email. Address. Seriously? Esri is asking me to get a new email address, to get a new Esri Global Account (which, as I said, encompasses my entire relationship with Esri since 2010), to get an ArcGIS Developer Subscription? This seems ... inconvenient.

Only when using the Edge browser, I'm getting a generic NetworkError (code 19) when calling XMLHttpRequest.send() against an ArcGIS Online REST endpoint. I have an array of feature service URLs, and I loop through the array to query each feature service for its layers. Following is a code snippet: Array.forEach(featureServiceURLs, lang.hitch(this, function (featureServiceURL) {
var url = featureServiceURL + "/layers?f=json&token=" + token;
var xmlHTTPRequest = new XMLHttpRequest();
xmlHTTPRequest.open("GET", url, false);
xmlHTTPRequest.send();
var response = JSON.parse(xmlHTTPRequest.responseText);
// ... additional code to handle response
})); If the array contains only one URL, then everything works fine. If it contains more than one URL, a NetworkError occurs after the first call to XMLHttpRequest.send(). This behaviour is not observed in Chrome or Firefox.

Hi Alex, Does Esri have a concise set of instructions, or any guidance at all, that you can offer on how to perform this configuration? The only guidance that I've seen is here: http://server.arcgis.com/en/server/latest/cloud/azure/install-ssl-certificate.htm Which starts at step 1 Obtain an SSL certificate and export the certificate to a .pfx file. What magical incantations must I invoke to do this? The Esri Book of Spells seems to be missing those pages.

I've deployed an ArcGIS Enterprise setup to Azure, and now I'm trying to install a CA-issued certificate so that the services can be accessed via HTTP without warnings. While Esri provides good documentation on how to install the certificate here, they provide no guidance on how to obtain the certificate, other than that I'm supposed to magically obtain a .pfx file somehow. My initial attempts have led me to a couple of roadblocks: Some CAs, such as Comodo, won't issue certificates for Azure domains. Once ArcGIS Server is installed, IIS won't serve out text files from wwwroot, which throws a wrench into the domain control validation process. Does anyone have any guidance on how to obtain a CA-issued certificate for ArcGIS Enterprise on Azure?
