Layer files are one way to go but you can also directly copy and paste your layers from one mxd to another mxd. This will keep all the symbology plus it will keep label preferences, scale dependencies, and other such properties. From working in a state agency, people are starting to really love the Map Journal template. It's basically a souped up powerpoint that adds a dynamic mapping component. It's tough with the class being large and with this geonet missing forums and such. Sometimes that will happen to me and I will simply bump the thread back to the top in order for it to be seen again. I have had weird issues with online content that were solved by me simply clearing my cache and things like that. I don't always like to clear my cache and browser history so sometimes I would check to see if the content worked in another browser. I would suggest just making one layer that is editable to the public (or to your group - that may be better), to where all of your students can edit that one layer. If each student made their own layer, then that will get crazy in the table of contents and not desirable. I am really unfamiliar with a lot of things related to web programming but I wanted to mention what has worked for me. I noticed that some of my maps, when coded in HTML and Javascript, would not open from a locally saved file for me but would open when I put it on a hosted server page thing. Does that make sense? I was unfamiliar with the Esri sandbox at the time but I would presume that my code would have opened in the sandbox just as well as it opened from being hosted on my company's server. So, maybe you could try that if you have that option? It likely will have to be set to full on public for it to work as well (I found that out with my stuff that the private or the "me only" stuff could not be viewed when I was developing it). ... I did not have any issues getting the Living Atlas to load while going through the instructions from the DIY course. Are you logged into your Developer account? I am not sure if that makes a difference or not but they really seem to harp on that a lot. Sometimes it may help to try a different browser or to clear your cache and web history with your current browser. ... View more

Sometimes field calculator is buggy. Are you in an edit session? Have you tried restarting ArcMap and making sure this file isn't open anywhere else? Sometimes it takes a few times and some troubleshooting to make the field calculator work. ... View more

I was once big time into VBA so I feel your pain in trying to switch over to something else. But, like others have said, it is time to make the switch and I would recommend Python.
