When you add your point feature class to an ArcGIS session it should automatically display each point as a point with a color. Is your point feature class a shapefile or from a geodatabase? Or are you talking that YOU just have a table with x,y coordinates on it? QUOTE=leobriant;366370]Hi, I'm new to GIS and I am having a problem with getting my point feature class to display the data points on the map. I have a point feature class with an attribute table that contains UTM coordinate columns. How do I get each point to display on the map? Thanks Brian

Yes, just open the expression and hit the reset button. It shows it as grayed out because the drop down is not capable of showing the entire expression. Once you've defined a label expression in a label class, the label field drop-down list will be grayed out as you've discovered. To go back to labeling just a field, change the label expression back to just a field name (in brackets) such as [name]. Then the drop-down list will be active again.

I have actually created a spreadsheet years ago with all the ESRI, NISC and other graphic fonts on our system and printed them out on 11 x 17 It has turned out to be tremendously helpful over the years to be able to see all the different symbols available at one time. Especially when creating custom symbols. Hi rborchert. Many thanks for the idea. I'll test it today. Thanks

BING took away their usage of their maps in ESRI unless you register for the service and are willing to pay a monthly fee. I cannot verify it but last I heard it was something like $8000 a month to use BING Maps To be more specific, for this particular problem it comes down to Bing support in the arcpy.mapping module since that is what the ArcGIS Server geoprocessing service is using.

Create a new attribute for the arrow. and use this as part of the Expression for the label "<FNT name = 'Wingdings 3' size='17' >" & [Arrow] & "</FNT>" [Arrow] is the asc(##) character that looks like an arrow in Wingdings. I have a situation where I need to label apartment number ranges in a very small area. like #700 to 745 So I put in this for the expressoin. [Description] & "<FNT name = 'Wingdings 3' size='17' >" & [Arrow] & "</FNT>"& [Description2] The Character ! is a left pointing arrow in Wingdings 3 " is a right facing arrow Here is what I do as a helper. Create an excel spreadsheet and create 3 columns First column make it 33, 34, 35...255 This is the complete range of ASC characters Second and third column =CHAR(33), = CHAR(34) ...all the way to 255. You can fill in the first two values and drag it down Make the second column your favorite font like Arial or something Make the third column Wingdings 3 Now you have a spreadsheet that shows you all the characters represented by Wingdings 3 and the corresponding Arial character Now some characters like Ð or ? are hard to find on you keyboard. This is why we have the first column with the number. you can press the ALT key and then 0 and the number ALT-0169 will result in a © If you don't include the 0 it will be ? which is a different character. I want to add arrows over or after labels. The labels are for points located on a road. In case no label exists, the arrow should not show up. Please have a look at the graphic I've attached. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Looking at it again. Use data driven pages and fill in the fields from Data Driven pages instead. and use a referenced data layer to show the outline of SLC you can position the DD pages dynamics where you want and colored how you want.

Keep using AI or do it in Word. You could create a database in Access with all the info and then build a report based on the data and designed as you wish. then export each page as an image to stick into your maps. Is there an alternative to using illustrator to create good looking legends with in ArcGIS Desktop? An extension or tool that can produce something similar to this: [ATTACH=CONFIG]31322[/ATTACH] Any ideas or just keep using Adobe Illustrator? Thanks, Brian

ArcReader works just fine on Full Windows 8 However, I have heard there may be issues when running on RT versions. You may want to consider a full windows tablet. hello everyone, i was wondering if anyone is either running arcreader on a windows 8 tablet, or knows that it will work one? thank you for any input

Don't geocode the parcel numbers. Use the Feature to Point function and check to box to do inside. This will create a centroid for all your parcels in one operation and include all data from the parcel polygons. You can geocode but it can be a pain. If you don't have parcel polygons and are trying to geocode using a geocoding service that should not work as the service would have to contain all the parcel numbers as part of its locational data. And I have not seen that before. I have difficulty geocoding parcel numbers. I used US-Single house locator but it returned 0 match. What can I do?

I would strongly recommend staying away from the Surface. It used Windows RT and that can be problematic for ArcGIS applications. It is also a bit underpowered. Keep in mind most tablets are designed for reading email, browsing the internet etc.. The surface, and most tablets, are not built to be working machines. I would recommend something more along the line of http://www.msimobile.com/level3_productpage.aspx?cid=112&id=425 or http://www.msimobile.com/level3_productpage.aspx?cid=112&id=440 Both very reasonably priced and have full versions of their operating systems I tested out ArcReader on a Windows 8.1 computer with a database built using Windows XP and ArcGIS 10.2 and it worked just fine. Does anybody have any experience using ArcReader (or any other ArcGIS software) on a Microsoft Surface tablet? If so which version of the tablet are you running? If not the Surface, how about another Windows 8-based tablet? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. -Matt

thanks I will give this a look. However it sparked an idea in me that we could simply assign address ranges in the transmission line from the SCADA point out and geocode the locations. But the quick look I took at the linear referencing looks promising.

I am new to Network Analyst. I have worked a lot with Geometric Networks. I am on 10.2 and have all extensions available to me. Here is what we are trying to do. We have transmission lines. We have SCADA points on those lines. What we would like to do is trace downstream from a given SCADA point a given distance. example. SCADA point ABC I want to select it and then find a point 1453 feet away on a given transmission line. Can anyone direct me to a tutorial or give me a rough sketch on how to accomplish this. I have created a Route Layer out of my transmission lines and assigned a RouteIdentifier. Do I need a geometric network, a network dataset etc... thanks,

You are best off creating a custom toolbar on your own and turning off whatever tool bars you don't want. I create a custom toolbar I call Floating. I always have it in the data view and it contains the tools I used the most. My current one has 17 tools in it. Create the custom toolbar in a blank session and save it to the normal. Hi all, I would like to change the look and feel of the MainToolBar in the Viewer. For instance, I would like to use my custom toolbar control. Or replace it with the componentOne Toolbar silverlight control. To which extend is a change possible? Extending, replacing etc? Many many thanks!

Never thought of using Unbound. But I like it. A couple other methods. export a unique identifier along with the full name field to a .csv in word open the .csv and replace all spaces with a tab. Save the .csv open it in excel. update the column names. i.e. last and first names. Now here you can error check for those names that may have a middle name or more than 2 words in the name. Ideally you would end up with 3 columns. You can sort the 4th column and quickly see it there is anything there and fix it if there is. open the .csv back in ArcGIS and join the unique identifiers up and update your feature with first and last. Method 2. Create your first and last name fields. Assuming your field is called [FirstLast] and you want it split to [First] and [Last] I was going to give a fancy instring command but I would suggest using the unbound from the previous example to get the first part. then for the second attribute mid([firstlast],((len([first])+1),100) This will populate the [last] field with a string beginning at the character after the space and fill it in with the next 100 characters. If you [firstlast] field has entries longer than 100 characters then just make the number longer, won't hurt anything. I have a table with a name field (where a name is like "John Smith") and I want to build a separate first_name and last_name fields. How can I populate each new field with just the first ("John) or last name ("Smith") using the original name field? I'm fine with 2 sep scripts I plug into the field calculator for each new field, unless someone wants to suggest another way. Thanks

Sounds like a hardware issue. What are the stats of your computer? If you running on a laptop that has integrated graphics this is probably the case. And it could very well be true for all TINs that you try to add to that machine. I ran through a ArcScene tutorial and the data provided was all pretty small. But small for a TIN is still pretty memory intensive. Hi I have an ArcScene tutorial SXD document, Create3dFeatures.sxd. When I open it I can see the topo_surface_tin TIN data source. However, when I try to add topo_surface_tin to a new ArcScene, it uses up all of my memory and I have to kill ArcScene. This is true for all TINs that I try to add to ArcScene. I notice that the topo_surface_tin in Create3dFeatures.sxd does not have the elevation categoried, but it does that automatically when I add the TIN to a new scene. Perhaps that is the problem? Any suggestions? Thanks
