Try Feature to Point Hello, I am in the process of trying to convert polygons to points on a map of Georgia. I am familiar with the "Polygon to Point" tool, however, the version of ArcGIS I am using is not licensed with that tool. Are there any other methods available that allows one to convert polygons to points? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated Thank You

What you need to do instead is Subtype one of the attributes and then in each instance of the subtype you can default the value for the attribute with a domain. It's my first question here.) Such issue. I want to create domains for two fields in attributive table. It's clear how to create separate domains for each field. But I want to create domains, which will be connected with each other. Depending on what I've choosen in first field, domain in the secondfield also changes. For example: in first field I choose "A" and then in second field I can choose "1" or "2"; otherwise in first field I choose "B" and then in second field I can choose "3" or "4". How can I implement it?

Try changing your leader style. Have you tried using Boundry Style on the ROW instead of labels with leaders. I have found that leaders are often a pain. What I have ended up doing in some situations is creating a point and leader feature and label off the point and have the leader snapped to the point and pointing where you want. We have run into a problem with the Maplex labeling on ArcMap Basic 10.1 The overlapping polygons of the pipeline right of ways are pushing labels and their leaders away from where they are supposed to be The highlighted right of way is mislabeled, and no amount of tweeking in the Maplex dialog box make the label move. I'm also constrained to labels, annotation isn't an option with this particular dataset. I also can't use topology rules due to the work processes in other departments. I would look forward to any suggestions or direction I could be pointed in. Nicole

You will probably be better off converting it to to shape file first. Hi, I am trying to export CAD file to KML. The export works but the annotations on google earth look real blurry when I zoom in. The conversion tool asks for a scale. I try typing in different scales but I stil get the blurry annotations when I zoom in real close. Does anyone have a solution to this problem. Thanks,

Open your attribute table and sort the values on shape_length from shortest to longest. Delete all Zero values if any and fix any issues with lengths less than 5. For road centerlines you really should clean up things less than 10. Also, turn snapping off it it is on. Just upgraded from 10.0 to 10.2. Worked fine in 10.0. Just pulling 2 attributes from a street feature class (from sde) and loading them into a civic point feature class (also sde). For whatever reason it's now giving an error saying cannot be performed on empty geometry. Clearly the geometry is not empty. Any clues?

I would still reset the browser to clear out the add on's especially with new machines. New machines, often do no come clean. Dell and Lenovo are good examples. They often come with Bing bar, ASK and other things. McAfee is a browser memory hog as well. I am using IE8 right now on this computer and I have had zero issues with it. We have seen this on brand new machines with IE8. Its not a hardware/software issue, its a browser issue

You are in a situation where you are going to have to manually move the legend. Data driven pages will not move it. HOWEVER I am not 100% certain what you mean my Blocks of Data, do you mean from different sources? You can set up a legend to only show items that are visible in the layout. IF your features do not exist in the 1 layout that it does in the 2 then you can create two legends and one will not be visible when the other two are Hi, I am using data driven pages to create a series of images for 3 separate blocks of data. I can set up the pages ok but am having difficulty in controlling the location of the legend between the 3 blocks. If for example i have the legend in the top right hand corner of the layout for the first block it remains here for the other two blocks. The problem is, for the last 2 blocks i wish to have the legend in different locations. Currently I am using data driven pages to create my layouts and then exporting each one individually after manually adjusting the legend and scale bars for each one. Fortunately this isn't too much of a problem as there are only 3 pages, but what if i wanted to create much more than this? Is there a way to automate their location in the layout based on the data in the layout i.e. move the legend to a suitable place so that it doesn't overlap with any of the data? Thanks

It is probably more of a hardware and software maintenance issue. First step is have your user clear their history on IE8 With IE8 open press control>Shift>Delete and it will open the delete history window. Make sure to keep passwords. Performance of the browser is also DIRECTLY related to the amount of junk they also have their browser performing. Add on browser extensions will drag you DOWN. If your person keeps their log ins active on a number of sites this drags you down as well. The above step will reset all those. In fact have them reset IE8. Go into IE click on the Tools>Internet Options>Advanced Tab and click the RESET button. This will flush all the junk out of your browser and let you start fresh. Un-check the delete personal settings and it will keep passwords and bookmarks. If you have someone who is using IE8 chances are they have been using it for a long time and it probably has a lot of garbage associated with it. In this order also run Error Checking (this may or may not require a re-boot. It can take a long time, so I generally do this when I go home at night) Disk Cleanup Disk Defragmentor As I write, it is probably NOT an IE8 issue, just the way is being maintained. As a final step determine how much space is left on the users hard drive. IF it is under 15% then take some steps to FREE up disc space. Sometimes what happens when user click on the cursor is struck for few Milliseconds and back to normal and if user is clicking very fast lets 10-20 times continuously on different portions of map then map kind of gets struck with the mouse pointer and moves with the pointer.

To go the unorthodox route. You can export the XML Schema of a geodatabase. Do Schema only NOT data. gets large that way Open that XML in Excel. copy and paste it to notepad. copy and paste it back into excel. Some fields will be hidden under the moniker *metadata when you open it in excel. putting it in notepad removes it and makes it visible. Now import that excel file into Access and now assess the imported table. There should be a column called DomainName and that will contain all your Domains. Most of the entries will be blank. Every feature class will be shown in this table and when I tested it out there was a column called DomainName48 that contained the the name of a domain and the name of the feature in a another column and the name of the attribute it was assigned to. However, when I tested this out I did it on a database that had a number of Subtyped features. It will show you every instance of every Subtype of that feature that uses that domain. Conversely you can use the file in Excel itself when you past it back in and using the Filter you can filter it to show a single domain name and then it will show you all the features (and subtypes) with that domain It isn't pretty but it works. Exploring this made me curious how ESRI actually stores what fields use domains. I guess its stored in some XML blob somewhere now at 10.1.

Use the GIS Diagrammer http://kiwigis.blogspot.com/2010/07/arcgis-diagrammer-for-arcgis-10.html Does anyone know how to use python to find every field (and fields on subtypes) that use a particular domain? Our SDE is 10.2 and on an Oracle database, and I have desktop 10.2.1. Basically if I need to change a domain (like change it's data type from string to integer) I need to delete it and recreate it. In order to delete it I need to find every place it's used and un-reference it. This is hard to do in a large SDE where domains are shared between many fields and feature classes. The out of the box method seems to be looping through EVERY feature class(and subtype) on the database and running arcpy.describe on every field see if they use a particular domain. This seems extremely inefficient and will take forever on our large SDE. Surely there must be a better way. I figured querying the SDE administration tables would be quicker but ran into some walls. By querying the GDB_Items and GDB_ItemRelationship tables I was able to see what feature classes reference a domain, but these don't seem to tell you which field(s) are using the domain, nor does it seems to show if a particular subtype uses a domain. I was curious how SDE at 10.2 actually stores that a field is using domain x, and also how it tracks that subtype y uses domain x. This way I can query the administration tables directly to make this process much faster. I plan to use the proper toolbox tools to make the domain assignment changes, I just want to query the administrative tables to find the references and quickly as possible. Thank you for any help you can provide, Andrew

Try building into a Maplex expression the specific font. I have a situation where I need to use two fonts in the same label. Here is the exact code I use. It give me an Arrow when I use the correct character. [Description] & "<FNT name = 'Wingdings 3' size='17' >" & [Arrow] & "</FNT>"& [Description2] & vbnewline & [Description3] The Description fields are my 3 label fields and Wingdings 3 is the font I am using. The arrow field is where I enter the character i want. In my case for example a = sign gives me a right arrow. I have the following problem. I need to make automatic labeling from the existing column. When I use a simple labeling, the character "??" is visible, but if I use Maplex (10.1) labeling, this symbol is not visible. It is replaced by a space sign instead. This character is from Cyrillic code page, and it is corresponds to sign "#" from English code page. For example, if feature attribute is "Раз. ??1", label looks like " Раз. 1". Does anyone know why it??s happens and how to solve this? Russian-speaking dealers could not help me. Appeal to Russian-speaking forums did not help, too. Thank you.

Not quite certain what you mean by label boxes. however, what I have done to specify a labels specific location is to create a Cardinal Direction Field. I gave it a domain. i.e North, NorthEast, East...etc... I then set up label rules to place a label that matches a specific cardinal direction to only place it in that location. Since then I have personally found it is better to use a rotation field instead of Cardinal directions. However, if those who are not so savvy are making edits it might be beter to limit them to cardinal directions. On split to the Rotation Field you can create a second field and call it LabelDistance. Your label specifications place a label an offset based on points or map units. You can create multiple label parameters for this. example. This label is at 45 degrees and I want it off set by 3 points. so my criteria are labeldistance = 3 and you set it to offset based on rotation and then in the parameters set it to off set at 3. So i you have say 10 different offset settings you create 10 label rules. Cumbersome to set up and get everything going but it works really well. I have confidence that when i print a page my labels are exactly where I want them. FYI I detest annotation I'm looking to label a dense set of points with multi-line data boxes where I can manually place/organize the boxes so that they are aesthetically logical and can be easily traced back to the points they apply to. I've created the boxes as I want them using a labeling expression, but I don't like the way ArcMap automatically places them...the points are dense enough that either some labels won't show up or they'll overlap each other (depending on the placement properties I choose). I know I can convert the labels to annotation, then move/place them manually, but as far as I can tell, once I do this, the annotation is no longer linked with the attribute table or each other, so that I can't make any universal changes to the content or formatting of the boxes...is this correct? Basically, once I have the boxes manually placed where I want them, I want to be able to modify the content in all the boxes (e.g. add or remove a line of attribute data) without them moving, or without starting over with the conversion of labels to annotation and having to move them all manually again. Currently, I save the annotation within the map during the conversion...does it make a difference if I save them within a geodatabase?? I'm just not that familiar with geodatabase files and have always worked mostly with individual shapefiles. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

It was possible and exceptionally handy do link Access databases. However, newer versions of ArcGIS have taken away this possibility. There may be a work around but I have not explored it. There is a different workaround however. Create a new personal geodatabase with ArcCatalog. Then use that database as an Access database and you can load it with tables that you can bring into ArcGIS Basically just a different way of creating and Access Database. Can anyone tell me is it possible to make a connection to a Access DateBase in ArcMap. If not, is possible to pull the Tables for the Access Database into a GeoDataBase.

Oh, the reason being is that the Arc's don't have vertices such as you would get with a polyline and the network build cannot get a fix on their location without those vertices. You are best off with segments. The curved lines, aka splines, can cause issues depending on how you are going to use them. Generally in a network they appear as a network build error.

I am in the process of migrating existing street centerlines to LG Road Centerlines and am at the point of cleaning up existing lines using Road Centerline topology. Here is my question: Must centerlines be constructed from straight line segments only? Or can they be comprised of straight line segments and arcs? I've looked at the Naperville example and it's curves all seem to be short line segments?
